Chevy Chase’s stint on the NBC comedy “Community” was a memorable one for fans and viewers alike.
However, the “Saturday Night Live” alum, 79, wishes he never appeared on the series.
Chase stopped by Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast recently and revealed “Community” wasn’t “funny enough” for him.
When Maron, 59, mentioned the 2009 series, Chase replied: “Oh. I kinda forgot about that.”
“They wanted me. So I said, ‘OK,’ ” Chase said about the show’s bigwigs.
“I felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately,” the comedian went on.
He added: “I felt a little bit constrained a bit. Everyone had their bits and stuff. I thought they were all good, but it just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.”
The “Caddyshack” actor starred as rich man Pierce Hawthorne for four seasons and left in 2014 after his alleged misbehavior on set.
The “National Lampoon’s European Vacation” star’s on-set behavior was called into question by creator Dan Harmon and co-star Donald Glover in a 2018 piece for the New Yorker.
Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, claimed that Chase called him the “N-word” and was racist toward him.
“Chevy was the first to realize how immensely gifted Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was to try to throw Donald off,” Harmon alleged at the time. “I remember apologizing to Donald after a particularly rough night of Chevy’s non-PC verbiage, and Donald said, ‘I don’t even worry about it.’ ”
Glover, now 40, chimed in: “I just saw Chevy as fighting time — a true artist has to be OK with his reign being over. I can’t help him if he’s thrashing in the water. But I know there’s a human in there somewhere — he’s almost too human.”
In response, Chase told the outlet: “I am saddened to hear that Donald perceived me in that light.”
During his chat with Maron, Chase explained that while he was fine with his character on the series, he “felt happier being alone, in a sense. I just didn’t want to be surrounded by that table every day with those people. It was too much.”
As for his status with Harmon, he said: “I have no idea if we’re OK. I’ve never been not OK. He’s kind of a pisser. He’s angry. He called and said he was sorry. I love him now.”
This isn’t the first time Chase has slammed the comedy. In 2012, he criticized the show in an audio recording obtained by Celebuzz. “It’s just a f—king mediocre sitcom! I want people to laugh and this isn’t funny,” he allegedly said to Harmon at the time. “It ain’t funny to me because I’m 67 years old, and I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve been making a lot of people laugh — a lot better than this.”
