00:00 Mega Man #21. It starts with a flash forward where Mega Man's shooting near Xander, even though it was programmed to be unable to hurt humans, when it's 10 seconds until the countdown ball would explode.
00:14 And Xander thinks this bomb will be a victory for his cause, and somehow thinks he'll be remembered as a martyr.
00:21 This is a recycled plot, with the setting being the only inferior difference. Then it cuts ahead in time to Mega Man nervously thanking the audience in the city square in front of a camera.
00:34 He thanks them for making him the guest of honor, and we get to see Dr. Light in a different outfit for once, which always humanizes him.
00:43 It's explained that there's a heavy police presence this year, because they're worried the Emerald Spears might try something. So Rosie tells Mega Man to follow her and check in with Stern, who explains that after Harvey was arrested, he spilled the beans on what he knew about his group.
01:00 Which wasn't much, because Xander did most of the organizing. Seems unrealistic, since Harvey was supposed to be the leader.
01:08 There's pointless recap, and one of Xander's friends says the badges they stole got them past security, because they're mistaken for maintenance workers.
01:17 One of them isn't okay with Xander's plan, because the people in the ball did nothing wrong.
01:23 For no reason, he doesn't explain what he thinks they did do wrong. He puts his hand on his brother's shoulder, and when a flying robot heads towards them, one of Xander's friends lies that they're the maintenance crew, so it leaves them alone.
01:39 Sure is convenient for them that it didn't use facial recognition technology. She doesn't care that much about the cause, because she'd rather leave. And Xander tells them to start taking down surveillance robots, and whatever threatens the mission. As if that won't attract enemies to them immediately.
01:58 I like that Megman was literal-minded, and thought CERN was asking him what his literal gut was telling him, even though Fireman was programmed to know the phrase "the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime." So this is weird.
02:12 CERN insists that robots can't feel the situation and make assumptions, even though robots this advanced would be able to do that. It certainly feels that way, because they talk like humans.
02:24 Wouldn't they be able to make predictions too, based on evidence?
02:28 Rosie says that because the drone went offline, she'll go with agents to search the rooftops. And CERN leaves to follow his gut, even though Rosie gave Megman an order.
02:40 CERN tells him to stay here and keep an eye out for Rosie. Because Megman reminds himself of what Xander is obsessed with, he gets an idea of what to do. And Xander's female friend tells his brother that they don't have to do this and can just leave.
02:56 Then she has no excuse for staying. His brother Theo wants to stay, because Xander's his brother who was always there for him when he needed him and he needs him now. She kisses him and calls him stupidly loyal, which is hypocritical of her since she's only here because she's stupidly loyal to him. And then she gaslights him by blatantly lying that she said adorably loyal.
03:19 She says she loves him, they see fireworks, and Xander says there it is, and Megman's shooting lasers while flying around on Rush Jet to get Xander's attention. He gets hit, but barely damaged by an auto-targeting blaster. It's so amazing at targeting that it succeeded even though Rush Jet was moving.
03:39 Why seems Xander firing at him some more after he hit him the first time? I have to assume that the weapon takes a long time to recharge. So instead, because Xander ends up saying no, I just have to assume Megman hid from him and the art didn't make it clear.
03:57 Megman tells Rosie that Xander shot at him, a laser hits her hand to make her drop her weapon, and she gets threatened at gunpoint. And by an insane coincidence, she actually recognizes the girl, which makes me think this is like a soap opera. It wasn't necessary for them to somehow know each other when the city's a sprawling metropolis, where the chances of that are practically zilch.
04:22 But apparently, to make things more interesting, she left the police academy Rosie was working at, and that made Rosie go looking for him. I don't take this seriously. Rosie's called out on for reporting her and ruining everything. Rosie surprisingly doesn't show a shred of guilt for ruining her life.
04:41 And while one moment she's in front of Theo, the next moment the story cheats because she magically ends up behind him instantly. So she's able to kick him into her. And then a weapon magically teleports to her hand. I assume she picked up the gun that she conveniently dropped, and we just didn't get to see that.
05:02 But she obviously would've been hit with the wrench before she'd have gotten the chance to move behind him. This is blatant Mary Sue writing. If you want a character who's all competent in the action, why doesn't you have a game character we care about do it instead of stretching believability to favoritize his own OC?
05:21 She would've either been hit with the wrench or shot before she'd have gotten the chance to do this. It should've been that the guy was in front of her instead. Although I think she's more of a jerkass Sue than a Mary Sue because she doesn't care about what she did to her life.
05:38 Surprisingly, Stern ends up confronting Xander from behind. Apparently he's politically incorrect whenever he talks to an enemy because he's fine with calling someone with an eye patch "Cyclops". Xander warns him about humanity's extinction in the Paths of the Legends series. And surprisingly, Stern agrees with him and says all of these robots made life easy and made humans soft. Reminds me of Scourge complaining about the Sweepbots.
06:06 He says he also believes in the law though, and he should know it's a waste of valuable time to say anything after this. It seems unprofessional of him to be so stupid that he ends up getting kicked. Maybe he wouldn't have been allowed to simply shoot him because Xander already put down his weapon, but he could've kicked it away and backed away from him.
06:27 Instead he gets distracted into talking to him based on their similar worldview. Stern dodges his punch, but it doesn't matter as he gets thrown off a ledge and has to grab on. And Rush bites his shirt and Mega Man grabs his hand to save him. That part of the shirt would immediately rip off because of the weight of Stern pulling down on it and Rush, who would've been pulled down with him as soon as Mega Man ran away.
06:53 Naturally assuming that Xander is going after the lightbulb of New Years. He wants to be memorable. It's obvious Mega Man is needed to fight Wily's even greater amounts of robots. I have to assume he always figured he'd be able to blow up Wily's new robots himself, which should've been explained. And he'd have the guts to get rid of Wily. So again, the only reason he's a villain is because he's endangering humans.
07:20 Eventually Mega Man takes his gun and tells Rush to fly to the front of the ball to catch it and take it sky high. He throws what must be a bomb at him for him to catch, and he isn't holding it in his mouth anymore in a later panel. Which would be Wily's survive if Mega Man's shooting at the bomb. It'd be a miracle if he hit it accurately, but since it was on a timer, it was guaranteed to blow up anyways. So I don't see why he shot at it.
07:47 Roll hugs Dr. Light, and eventually Xander somehow expects the robot to finish him off, when he should know that the first law of robotics would keep him from doing that. The Emerald Spirits even took advantage of this and Hobby pointed it out. But somehow Xander's surprised by his reaction. Mega Man says compassion isn't a weakness, but of course gives no logical arguments for why not, so he should've known that it wouldn't convince anyone.
08:13 CERN ends up grabbing Xander and having a weapon pointed at him, and gets told by Mega Man that he trusted his gun. Mega Man arbitrarily lies to the police later that it's Mark Zarr because he partied, because apparently Dr. Light passed down the part of his personality that makes him fine with lying for no reason. I say no reason because why would they believe that? He thanks the audience for coming here tonight for no reason.
08:39 Then he weighs the rest of the story with a boring speech where he eventually says he vows to be more like people, when it should be obvious he already got there, so that's idiotic.
08:50 Mega Man #22. Ice Man tells Quake Woman to shave off a piece of ice because he's been making her form ice into a giant heart. So this is the point where his crush on Roll stops being subtle. You'd think a character called Ice Man would be characterized as a man, but he has to be a little boy for his crush on Roll to make sense in a kids' series.
09:14 But why was he made a boy anyways if he wasn't made to be Dr. Light's son? He was made to be an employee. I like that Roll's in a different outfit for once. Why isn't Mega Man acting cold? Why isn't he wearing winter clothes?
09:32 She asks how they can feel cold, and his answer is still confusing because I don't see why snowy weather would be too cold for robots. I understand them being able to feel that it's cold, but not that they would be bothered by it.
09:48 Ice Man puts his arm around Roll and takes her hand without asking her permission and tells her that she warms his heart. She is literal-minded enough to say she doesn't have a heart and at least say it's a cute sculpture and only gets that he was bored. Maybe she did get the obvious hint, but I can't tell because she was blushing in every panel before this to represent her being cold.
10:14 And yet that doesn't apply to Quake Woman. There's no way she wouldn't get the hint. It turns out Ice Man wanted help with the deep ice research. He wouldn't actually want Mega Man's help with this. There's two other researchers here. He just wanted an excuse for Roll to come here.
10:34 Mega Man wants to copy the Quake drill because he thinks carving ice sculptures could be fun, and Roll tells Ice Man they should hook up, and he says yes before she gets to say rock and tempo. And for the writing to not be garbage, it has to be that she's ignoring what this obviously means from him because she doesn't want to offend him, as nobody could be that stupid.
10:59 There's no reference to Mega Man dating Quake Woman in either of the crossovers, so I'm assuming this is going to be a sad waste of time making me wonder why the writer is so bitter he refuses to let characters be happier than they already were considering that he's married. Since Ice Man will probably never be given a chance, this is as annoying as Amy's crush because it's a waste of time that makes me feel sorry for both of them.
11:26 So this is the kind of plot point that gets old after the second time.
11:31 Rosie's in a different outfit for once, and she's planning to go on a date. She gets called because her date wants to cancel, and the writer's too lazy to explain why.
11:43 Stern tells her that because she's got a reservation, he's gonna go with her. She complains that he's too old for her, but still goes to the restaurant with him. If she really didn't want to do this, she wouldn't have walked here, so she just really wanted to eat here. And of course, Doctor likes having dinner with Noelle.
12:04 Why is he trying to invite Stern to join him? He isn't happy about it, and some worthless dialogue ensues. Doctor Light puts his arm around Noelle, and is smart enough to know that Ice Man's got a crush on his daughter. So that's a pleasant surprise.
12:23 I guess the reason he's actually okay with it is because he knows he doesn't have a chance with her. He made them able to get a crush purely to make them like humans for the sake of it.
12:34 Roll makes it too obvious with her facial expressions that she's trying to manipulate Mega Man. She advises them to get to know Quake better and to date her. Roll says it would help her emotional development and be nice, and he at least admits that it makes sense. Stern insists that people aren't machines with no logic, and Rosie apologizes to Noelle.
12:57 Doctor Light naturally points out that brains are just organic computers. It's silly if Doctor Light insists with complete certainty that full human-robotic integration is still thousands of years away. It's a reference to the Mega Man Legends series, meta-wise, but in-universe, there's no reason that someone as capable as him who made sentient robots would think he can't do this.
13:22 And I thought the Reploid Wars were the only reason it took as long as Legends for it to finally happen. Doctor Light tells Stern a robot that can't love is scarier than one who can, even though that doesn't explain why it'd make them capable of romantic love in particular.
13:39 This issue is such a waste of time. This isn't what anyone would come to Mega Man for, and it doesn't seem like it took effort to come up with. It's so hard to watch Roll manipulate Quake Woman. She says she could date her brother. Predictably, Stern warns Doctor Light about jealousy.
13:57 Mega Man's naive enough to ask Ice Man if he should date Quake Woman. He thinks he's too young, even though he knows robots don't age. And Ice Man sarcastically says he knows nothing about romance and suggests going somewhere.
14:11 Conveniently, Doctor Light and Stern are able to quote lines from fiction perfectly. This is the kind of thing that only happens in fiction, because in real life, people usually paraphrase. Mega Man tells Quake Woman her hair looks nice, and she thanks him in confusion, and he apologizes.
14:28 The ice cracks a lot, and Roll falls. I feel like this is the only good part of the story. Doctor Light tells a joke that makes Rosie and Noelle laugh, and he says he misses the past version of Wily.
14:42 Every time I see a flashback where Wily was working for Doctor Light, I feel the same way. Like it's more interesting than the games because you wouldn't expect it, and they contrast each other. Though it still never really explains why they're friends, because Wily isn't really getting along with him.
15:00 Rosie says she can't believe the Emerald Spears would think Doctor Light is as dangerous as Wily, and Stern just has to say he can. He's at least allowed to explain he's against the Emerald Spears, and makes a good point that it'd suck if a virus turned all of those robots crazy.
15:16 Noelle agrees that they need to take on advances cautiously. No amount of caution would make it impossible for a virus to make all of those robots dangerous. Rosie apologizes, and Doctor Light thankfully admits that Stern is entitled to his opinion, and his concerns are understandable.
15:36 Why did he invite him to dinner when he should've expected this to lead to an argument ruining his date? He wants to make his world a world for all of them, and Stern wants to know how to make sure they share, and Doctor Light says it'll be by teaching robots compassion. That worked out so well by the X-Series when the Sigma virus happened.
15:57 Why even have characters have this debate? The fanbase should already know by this point that Stern is right. Rue calls Megman to say she's fine, and Megman calls Iceman, who says that reception's terrible down here. Conveniently, out of nowhere he can pick up their heat signatures, when heat is the opposite of ice. Why would he get this feature and not Megaman?
16:21 Megman doesn't get a signal from Quake, and gets told where to go, and he sees her crying. So far, her having feelings has done nothing but make her miserable. This doesn't teach a family-friendly lesson. She's upset because she's supposedly buried, even though she's not. She's just surrounded by ice. This is just annoying. She's not buried because she's able to move around perfectly.
16:46 And finally, it's addressed that she's scared her mom might take away her emotions because all she's felt so far is fear. He helps her walk, and talks to her about courage, and says she already has it. She says that staying friends keeps things simple. He thanks her, she says Roll will be disappointed, and I love that someone says "She can get over it," even if that is out of character for Megman.
17:11 This comic makes him more of a jerk than you'd expect from Megman 8. The same goes for Roll. All I know about her from the games is she saves her Robo-Antipill for Megaman, but most of the time she's a jerk who doesn't get along with him, when she's not being Sally. What's a shame about him saying "She can get over it" is that it's rude to the people who would actually want them to get together, though.
17:34 Iceman grinds on some curving ice, wasting a whole page until he finally finds Roll. For no reason, being too cold makes Megman's processor start slowing. And Iceman says the ice is too thick for a teleport signal. Iceman warns him about high-pressure waters nearby. Eventually, Megman gets the idea to punch to release them.
17:57 He told Iceman to make an ice platform so that they could ride it to the snow on the surface, where Megman makes a snow angel. Iceman says that was too risky, and out of nowhere, Quake Woman says that it was so exciting that she wants to do it again, even though she was characterized as nothing but a scaredy cat before.
18:15 Rosie walks away with her friends waving goodbye and says that was a lovely evening. Sure is nice that she tells white lies. She gets away with elbowing him with no impact shown because she's a girl, and he says he's worried that she'll settle for less, and she thanks him.
18:33 And I think about how unfair it is that this is the only time Noelle's gonna date Dr. Light, because I feel like the argument ruined the date and caused her to not give him another chance. Not that she's really worthy of him anyways, because the fanbase is split on whether they should forgive her or not. And considering how early the comic ends, it was obviously a mistake to have her basically do nothing to make up for it.
18:59 This issue is about Megman eventually stopping Xander from blowing up a place again and getting the bomb high up in the sky with Rush. I guess Xander tried to do this because he assumed robots would be here.
19:11 The only other thing to say about this since the problem was dealt with in just one issue was that Rosie and Stern's time to shine was embarrassing. It made no sense that Rosie went from being in front of someone with the wrench to instantly behind him so she could kick him, as she would have been shot or hit, and it didn't have to be written that she would succeed.
19:30 And arresting people is Stern's job, so he would have known to kick away the weapon and back away, but N'Zei got kicked because he talked too much when he should have known he was wasting his time. There's a reason I didn't expect a federal agent to respond to what he had to say twice.
19:45 It wasn't a bad story most of the time, though, just disappointingly empty compared to the last story with Xander because only Megman was really doing anything and there was just one bomb. So it was just a watered-down version of the last time, with less of a good location because I think only a few robots are here. And even if there are more robots, we weren't told that.
20:07 It's just a lazy, recycled plot. I don't think it was worth it to have Xander get away the first time, then.
20:15 This issue wastes a lot of time at the start with Roll's doomed efforts to get Megman a girlfriend until he and his friends fall through the ice and eventually need Iceman to use a convenient geyser to send them back up on an ice platform. And that's the part that you should skip to.
20:32 Aside from the parts where there is some tension because they're all separated, it was all just padding. Especially when Stern had a predictable argument with Dr. Light that did almost nothing but go over the same predictable points that Noelle did.
20:46 It was just okay to go through. And since Roll's efforts were pointless and was just uncomfortable because she made both of them uncomfortable, I don't think it even was just okay until it got exciting.
