00:00 night at the 2023 MTV VMAs.
00:03 Rima and Selena won Best Afrobeat Song for their hit "Calm Down" and during their acceptance
00:08 speech Selena got some support in the crowd from her bestie Taylor Swift.
00:12 "Thank you so much Rima for believing in me and thank you for choosing me to be a part
00:17 of such an incredible song that's been able to break records.
00:21 Thank you to all of you for listening, for streaming, I could not be more honored and
00:29 I want to send all my love to Nigeria.
00:31 Thank you."
00:40 At the event, the Only Murders in the Building star looked stunning in a curve-hugging bright
00:45 red dress that she paired with some strappy crimson heels.
00:49 Selena is super talented all around, from singing to acting and more.
00:54 AXS spoke with the star at the premiere of her documentary Selena Gomez My Mind and Me
00:58 and she opened up about working on the project and more.
01:02 "Hi Selena, how are you?
01:05 Thank you and same.
01:06 First of all, congratulations on this project and secondly, thank you for making it.
01:11 I'm not going to get super emotional, but thank you for making it.
01:16 You know, it took a lot of brave vulnerability to share a story like this, your story, and
01:21 I just spoke with Alec who said that you gave him full license to do what he would with
01:25 your story.
01:27 How much vulnerability, how much, if any, fear was there attached to that?
01:31 Oh yeah, I'm still scared actually.
01:33 It was very uncomfortable to be honest in moments, but then I feel like it was also
01:39 necessary.
01:40 I thought the story needed to be bigger than just me and my music.
01:45 I think it took a life of its own and he just created the story that truly is my life in
01:52 a time capsule."
01:53 "Yeah, your life in a time capsule, it is inspiring.
01:57 It's gut-wrenching.
01:58 You know, I ask this next question and I don't ask it lightly and only so much as your comfortable
02:03 sharing, but that log line behind us says, 'Every breath, a breakthrough.'
02:07 What does that mean for you and in your darkest moments of that struggle, what did you maybe
02:13 fear most?"
02:14 "I think I was scared of myself.
02:16 The way I was treating myself, the way I was talking about my body, it breaks my heart
02:22 to think that's who I was.
02:25 And it was really heartbreaking for me to know that.
02:28 I hope I never, I just don't want anyone to feel what I feel or has walked through."
02:34 "I feel like you, this can't not be an emotional carpet for you.
02:40 What are you feeling right now and why?"
02:42 "I'm very nervous.
02:44 This has been exciting, but a little overwhelming to be honest.
02:47 I think I am still like a little shaky, but I'm excited to be here and I'm happy that
02:51 it's going to be released."
02:53 "Really quickly, anyone struggling at home who may be watching and going through something
02:58 similar who may feel like their darkest days are still ahead, what would you say to them?
03:03 What would you encourage them with?"
03:04 "I would encourage them to be not afraid to seek help, but at the same time, learn about
03:10 it, understand what it is, because once you have the knowledge of what you're going through,
03:14 you're less afraid of it.
03:16 So I would say learn as much as you can."
03:17 "I would encourage them to be not afraid to seek help, but at the same time, learn
03:18 about it, understand what it is, because once you have the knowledge of what you're going
03:19 through, you're less afraid of it."
