00:00 Okay, so good to get to 3-0.
00:03 You know, it wasn't pretty at times,
00:05 but again, you know, like I told them,
00:08 these are what happens in games.
00:09 Everything ain't gonna go our way like the first game did,
00:11 first game of the year, so credit to those guys.
00:14 They had a good plan, I thought, offensively.
00:16 Had some good things, and I think they were leading ACC
00:19 in offense coming in, so we got the quarterback,
00:22 you know, playing a lot better than he used to
00:24 and doing a good job.
00:27 I thought Jackson did some really special things today,
00:32 running the ball and making people miss,
00:35 running the ball, and then, you know,
00:37 it was good to get a couple explosive plays late there
00:39 in the passing game.
00:41 But I don't know what's gonna happen.
00:43 I can't predict exactly what's gonna happen
00:45 with the run and pass and the yardage.
00:46 You know, he ran the ball really well in the first half,
00:48 and, you know, they were playing deeper,
00:50 and he run the ball really well because he called more runs,
00:53 so kind of like you're supposed to do when you have --
00:56 So he's glad how it ended up.
01:00 With this one in the fourth quarter again,
01:01 it went in the second half.
01:02 Coming out 14-0 right off the bat,
01:04 and he finished in 21-7 or something like that, 24-7.
01:10 So that was good to see, and we've got a lot of work to do.
01:15 I don't think we're very pleased how we played defense,
01:17 even though the points, you know, were decent early
01:20 in the game, a lot of yardage, a lot of missed tackles.
01:23 We've got a lot of work to do.
01:26 Everybody have a question?
01:27 Jackson career high, I believe, 136 yards rushing,
01:36 and those two scores, was that the plan coming in?
01:39 Did you know that that might be something
01:40 you could take advantage of coming in?
01:43 Well, some of that was last year.
01:44 You know, he ran the ball really well,
01:46 running back and quarterbacks a year ago against him,
01:48 and there were a lot of similar scheme
01:50 to the same defensive coordinator.
01:51 So some of that was.
01:53 I mean, obviously, you don't know that a long run
01:56 is going to break like it did,
01:57 and there were some short yardages there
02:00 that we've been struggling with in the short yardage.
02:02 We just want to make sure we got outside of everything
02:04 and pick some up.
02:06 So did a really good job, and going to pick up the flag.
02:10 You know, when the top receiver down,
02:12 he's got eight catches for five touchdowns up here,
02:14 and the top tight end is down,
02:18 and the running back wasn't 100%,
02:20 so I commend the running back for playing.
02:22 He didn't practice very much at all this week,
02:24 and I think this one there kind of helps the run.
02:30 Like two weeks in a row,
02:31 we asked you this after two in the last week,
02:33 but came out in the second half there
02:35 with just a little bit different kind of attitude.
02:38 What have you seen these two weeks inside the locker room
02:40 as kind of maybe seen a switch flip with your guys?
02:45 Yeah, I don't have the numbers in front of me.
02:47 I'm coming in the game in the second half
02:48 that was extremely lopsided how we had played,
02:50 and we did it again, so I'll be out there in the second half
02:53 in the fourth quarter scoring on an army in the entire country.
02:56 So I don't know how you play these coaches
02:59 that takes all the credit and says,
03:00 "This is half-time, so get you."
03:01 I mean, I just think it's players
03:04 continuing to execute and making the plays better
03:06 and doing better in situations.
03:10 Coach, you said you got work to do.
03:12 Could you be a little more specific
03:13 in what areas you're most concerned with?
03:17 I didn't think we tackled very well, like I said.
03:20 Didn't rush the passer as well as I would have thought we did.
03:23 We would, but our matchups coming in would have been up front
03:26 would have made it harder on the quarterback.
03:27 So those guys coached you and did a good job.
03:30 I think they were very well coached on offense this year
03:33 and doing good things.
03:36 And we seemed to not, until the end there,
03:39 not have a really great passing game going
03:42 since Trey's been hurt.
03:44 Reached on and came out this whole time.
03:47 It was a major staple of our offense coming into the season.
03:49 So Jackson's kind of stepping up.
03:53 You were talking briefly just about defensive miscues.
03:56 With time possession, what it was in favor of Georgia Tech,
03:59 and when Georgia Tech started to kind of come back a little bit,
04:01 you feel like the amount of times that you guys
04:03 go on the field kind of, it gets all deep.
04:05 Like, did that play a factor in that?
04:07 Well, there's two things on that.
04:08 One, we play fast, so we're probably never going
04:10 to win the time possession if we go to one.
04:12 So they won it today, you know,
04:16 40 minutes to 20 minutes, and they won 40 to 23.
04:19 But that's the most irrelevant stat
04:20 to winning football if you want analytics.
04:23 That's an old school way of thinking.
04:26 It's really just take longer between snaps standing there.
04:28 Why does that mean you're going to be better?
04:31 So the problem is not getting off on third down.
04:35 You know, they go 11 or 20 on third down,
04:37 so they keep going.
04:38 That's where the problem comes.
04:39 You get stuck out there for a lot of plays.
04:42 You get some explosive plays, and then that's how
04:44 you end up getting lopsided 89 to 56 play count.
04:50 On the defensive side, there's been a lot of rotation.
04:52 Just what are kind of your pros and cons of that?
04:56 Sorry, I'm on the first side.
04:58 Defensive side of the ball?
04:59 Yeah, I mean, we're trying to play a lot of players.
05:00 Again, high play count.
05:02 By not getting off on third down,
05:03 we're getting off on every third down,
05:04 and you won't play as many players
05:06 because you're not getting tired.
05:07 So we're still trying to figure out.
05:09 We've got a brand-new system,
05:11 so we're rotating guys in and figure out
05:12 who are the best players.
05:14 We'll take a question up top.
05:16 Lane, Monday you talked a lot about the belief
05:19 in the run game and how important that is.
05:20 Just how good is it when you see that you're not only,
05:23 you know, getting those run plays in,
05:25 but then they start breaking them off,
05:26 and it's just that belief starts paying off?
05:29 Yeah, you know, we just do what it takes to win.
05:33 And there's a lot of things we've done pretty well.
05:34 I think one is offensively of adjusting and whatever.
05:38 You know, we're just not going to throw the ball all the time
05:39 or run the ball all the time.
05:41 We're going to figure out what they're doing.
05:42 Have a lot of plays that are RPOs in some ways
05:46 that are designed based off what they do.
05:48 And, you know, today, 19 pass attempts and 37 carries.
05:52 So, you know, do what it takes to win.
05:55 Sometimes, you don't know, you come out there
05:57 and you start playing some double-clouded coverage,
06:00 that's hard to throw.
06:02 We'll stay up top.
06:03 Coach, you moved to 3-0.
06:05 What are you hoping your guys will take from non-conference
06:08 into conference plays?
06:09 What are you hoping conference play next week in Tuscaloosa?
06:13 You know, the only thing you can beat is 3-0.
06:16 You have to be 4-0 up for three games.
06:17 So I commend our players for that.
06:20 We got new coaches.
06:21 We got a lot of tons of new players out there.
06:25 We've got some significant major impact injuries on offense.
06:30 So I commend them for getting to 3-0.
06:33 And I kind of would have thought, you know,
06:36 it was going to take some time for you to get going.
06:37 So you want to survive and win these games
06:39 and continue to get better as these parts come together,
06:42 especially, like I said, defensively.
06:44 I mean, you got a ton of new players out there
06:47 trying to play together in a brand-new system.
06:51 Clark, we'll go back to L.A.
06:53 Lane, do you have any response to the lawsuit
06:55 filed by DeSanto Relics this week?
06:58 Yeah, we issued our statement.
06:59 We have nothing to prove this week.
07:07 Coach, of those rotational players on defense,
07:09 anybody kind of stepped up for you?
07:13 I thought the Phans, I thought Akeelah Stone
07:15 played pretty good today.
07:17 Yeah, he's done a good job.
07:18 Pass rush when he's gone in there.
07:22 You know, I like when Edison goes in
07:25 because, you know, he adds some speed in there.
07:27 You know, kind of playing the linebacker,
07:28 he's well-exercised, but I really like how hard he hits
07:30 and how he runs.
07:33 You know, an option to get, you know,
07:36 makes plays, things like that.
07:37 Almost every time he goes in, number four makes plays.
07:39 So, we got to continue to find a way
07:41 to get him to master more and more.
07:44 And it's hard on defense to get guys to play outside backers
07:47 and off backers.
07:48 There's a lot of stuff to do in a college football.
07:51 Lane, what's your assessment of the offensive line
07:53 through three games?
07:54 Do you feel like you found the right combination of guys?
07:57 I thought today was obviously much better than last week.
08:00 You know, it says four negative wash yards,
08:07 you know, only one yard by a running back.
08:09 So, that means you don't have to adapt really quick
08:11 because you have negative runs.
08:13 If you have negative runs, that usually means you get up front.
08:16 So, they did a much better job,
08:19 and they practiced better this week.
08:20 So, it was good to see.
08:22 Now we got to get rid of the holdings.
08:23 That's what sets us back.
08:26 You know, also some points.
08:29 I know your focus has been on your team.
08:30 I'm curious how much you've paid attention to Alabama
08:32 and specifically some of their quarterback issues.
08:35 Last year, Bryce Young was obviously
08:37 the difference maker on the field.
08:38 He won't be there this time.
08:39 How big of an opportunity is this for you guys
08:42 catching them with quarterback uncertainty?
08:45 Well, it's good to know Bryce won't be there.
08:47 [laughter]
08:49 Very positive.
08:50 I mean, we all got our issues.
08:55 You know, this is one of the best teams, you know,
08:58 the best team in the last 15 years,
09:00 and it's one of the hardest places to play.
09:02 This was Texan and I know they've made betting easier.
09:04 So, it's a huge challenge, a dynasty,
09:08 and it's going to be a lot of work
09:10 just to deal with those guys.
09:13 We've got a recruiting class of five-star players every week.
09:18 Anything else for Coach?
09:20 All right, last one.
09:21 Just what was the conversation with Sean,
09:23 I guess, throughout the day and just how it felt
09:25 and how it made the decision to start?
09:28 Yeah, I commend him a lot for, you know,
09:31 he never addressed what injury it is,
09:33 but to be extremely injured
09:35 and not be able to practice very much.
09:38 You know, he'd come out and play,
09:39 and I didn't really think a lot of times
09:42 this week he was going to play at all.
09:43 And then he came out and got some Houston warm-ups
09:47 and said he was ready to go.
09:49 So, we played him not quite as much as we normally would
09:51 with a week off of practice,
09:53 but, you know, we got him in there.
