Transcript
00:00 Bret Hart was a no-nonsense technical wrestler who grew up in a time where there was a wrestling
00:03 moral code.
00:04 You acted professional, you didn't break kayfabe, and you portrayed your character
00:06 on screen and off.
00:07 And sometimes you wore wicked sweet shades about it.
00:09 Shawn Michaels was a flamboyant bad boy who did whatever it took to get himself over.
00:12 He was one of the first to treat wrestling like a TV show, albeit for him, a reality
00:16 style TV show.
00:17 The clash of style on screen and off would lead to one of the best feuds in wrestling
00:20 history that was topped off with a finale that would make the best con man tip his hat
00:23 while he dipped in your pocket.
00:25 This is Fast Feuds - Hart vs. Michaels.
00:27 After both parting ways with their tag team partners in '91, Hart without much fanfare
00:30 while Michaels' barbershop breakup was more cutthroat than Sweeney Todd, both men refocused
00:34 on singles competition.
00:35 And though they competed briefly over the Intercontinental title in the first ladder
00:37 match in WF history and having a world heavyweight title match at Survivor Series 92, which Hart
00:41 came out on top of, it wasn't until Vincent Mann got involved that the two were put on
00:44 a collision course.
00:45 Because though Hart was currently the best there was, is, and ever will be as champion,
00:48 he dropped the belt to Yokozuna after Mr. Fuji threw salt in his eyes, only for Hogan
00:51 to come out to challenge Zuna to a match and dodge the salt, hit the leg drop, and walk
00:54 out as champ.
00:55 Naturally, this broke Bret's heart because it made the excellence of execution look like
00:58 the chump of Trumpington Manor, leaving Bret pissed at Vince and anyone who perceived to
01:01 be one of his boys.
01:02 Hogan dropped the belt back to Yokozuna at King of the Ring and split for WCW, so Vince
01:06 turned back to Hart at Mania X.
01:07 But it was Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon who tore the house down that night in a now
01:10 iconic ladder match, which Hart claimed Michaels stole a lot of spots he came up with for their
01:13 earlier far less famous ladder match.
01:15 To add insult to injury, Michaels' real life buddy and on-screen enforcer was one Diesel,
01:18 who if you hadn't noticed is very big and Vince likes big.
01:21 Which meant Hart would drop the belt to Bob Batlin in order to get the title on Diesel
01:24 three days later.
01:25 It's up from 22 seconds, but I'm sure there was no consolation to Hart.
01:28 Here's where the real fun begins though.
01:29 Hart was in a huff over his lackluster match with Batlin at Mania XI and took it out on
01:33 Michaels.
01:34 Ever the traditionalist, Hart was pissed because Michaels stole the show and got fan support
01:37 despite being a heel.
01:38 Bret blamed Shawn for working face and breaking the code.
01:40 At Survivor Series, Hart won the title back from Nash, who apparently told him to "not
01:43 forget who did you the effing favor."
01:45 So the beef between Bret and Michaels continued.
01:46 The two would openly trade insults.
01:48 Michaels said Hart only wanted to work with family, while Bret said HBK only wanted to
01:51 cavort with the clique.
01:52 With the real life unrest looming large, Vince thought, "I'll let these two pretend to beat
01:55 each other up.
01:56 They'll love that."
01:57 And the match was set for WrestleMania XII.
01:58 The two would go at it in the first ever WWF 60 Minute Iron Man match.
02:01 Hart agreed to drop the title to Michaels to take some time off.
02:04 However, Bret had problems with the lead up to the match.
02:06 Hart working a grueling schedule as champ while Michaels got time off to get in shape.
02:09 Though apparently drinking beer and posing for adult magazines doesn't prepare you for
02:11 going 60 minutes.
02:12 Speaking of adult magazines, many wrestling pundits agree that the two men worked stiff
02:15 throughout the match.
02:16 Neither will admit to stiffing the other despite their hatred, but it was clear that Hart left
02:18 the match angry.
02:20 During Hart's time off, HBK would shoulder the burden of carrying the company, but in
02:23 '96, clique classmates Hall and Nash headed south to WCW and fans started turning over
02:26 their sets in droves, so Vince thought the product needed a shot in the arm.
02:29 Fortunately, he knew a sharpshooter.
02:31 Only problem though, Hart was thinking of going to WCW too.
02:34 Vince couldn't match WCW money, so he got creative.
02:36 Something most of us forgot he could do.
02:38 Vince offered Hart a 20 year contract with Creative Control for the last 30 days if he
02:41 ever decided to leave the WWF.
02:43 So Hart came back and feuded with Steve Austin?
02:45 Yeah, you see the plan here was to feud with Michaels, but HBK, ever the babyface, refused
02:49 because he didn't want to lose to Hart, so instead he vacated the title.
02:52 Vince was happy to let Michaels act like an immature jackass and Hart whine incessantly
02:55 on Raw, but the bickering wasn't just left in the ring either, as after Michaels accused
02:58 Hart of having an affair with Sonny, Hart attacked Michaels backstage.
03:00 McMahon made them recreate the whole thing on television.
03:03 What could go wrong?
03:04 Meanwhile, Steve Austin was skyrocketing in popularity and Vince wanted to get the title
03:07 on Stone Cold, deciding Michaels-Austin was the better program.
03:10 So Hart had to drop the belt once again for someone Vince loved more.
03:13 This time the middleman was his bitter rival Michaels, and Vince wanted Bret to do the
03:15 job in his home country of Canada at Survivor Series.
03:18 Again, what could go wrong?
03:19 With the WWF in a rough financial position, they could no longer agree to Bret's 20-year
03:22 deal, so Vince told Hart to call WCW, who signed him on a 3-year deal.
03:25 Now remember that creative control clause for his last 30 days?
03:28 Well Bret flexed it and said he would drop the belt to anyone but Michaels, and Vince,
03:31 man of his word, made the match anyway, counter-offering a double DQ finish and Hart would vacate the
03:34 title on Raw the next night.
03:36 As we all know, that is exactly what happened.
03:40 Instead what happened was Michaels locked in the sharpshooter, referee Earl Hebner signaled
03:42 for the submission, and Vince shouted "Ring the bell!"
03:45 Michaels grabbed the title and hightailed it out of there.
03:46 The show went off the air immediately.
03:48 But fans in the arena were treated to a post-show temper tantrum from Hart, who had an epic
03:51 meltdown in Montreal which included spitting on Vince McMahon.
03:54 Hart calmed down enough to thank the fans and then went backstage where he thought "JK,
03:57 I'm not calm," punched Vince, and confronted Michaels who promised him he had nothing to
04:00 do with it.
04:01 The next night on Raw, Michaels and Vince responded to the deception by having a little
04:03 person come out dressed as Hart.
04:05 Survivor Series would be the last time Hart would appear in WWE for 12 years.
04:09 After a career-ending injury in WCW, Hart wanted to put the bitterness and ghosts of
04:12 his past behind him.
04:13 While Michaels would give up his partying and turn to Christianity, he wanted to get
04:15 forgiveness from those he wronged.
04:17 On January 4th, 2010, Michaels and Hart would share a ring once again, this time no screw
04:20 drops or brawls.
04:21 It was just an unscripted conversation and a handshake.
04:24 Two incredibly talented performers who could do it all in the ring, the clash of styles,
04:27 the off-screen conflict turning to on-screen story, the old school last of a dying breed
04:30 versus the new school first of its kind, controversy and con men, Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels had
04:35 it all.
04:36 That's why Michaels vs Hart will be a rivalry that will be talked about throughout the history
04:39 of wrestling.
