00:00 As we look ahead to 2024, be sure to check out my summer movie season breakdown, linked down below,
00:06 I also want to take a specific look at Disney.
00:10 Because the Mouse House is having some significant problems.
00:13 In fact, they're so bad, that in the latest earnings call, Bob Iger even had to admit it.
00:19 He was like, "Oh, our box office is not what it should be."
00:22 But he said, "Don't worry, he's personally working on bringing the Mouse House back to its former box office glory."
00:29 But how's he gonna do that?
00:30 Does he even know how to do that?
00:32 And also, how's he gonna do it for 2024, when most of these movies are already very far along?
00:37 So, I mean, like the Bob Iger effect, if it's true, it probably wouldn't happen until maybe 2025.
00:46 So let's see how things are looking for Disney.
00:48 Are they going to improve in 2024?
00:50 Or will Bob Iger still be making apologies?
00:53 And will he still be on the ropes?
00:55 And I'll tell you what I feel are the movies that are probably gonna be hits or underperformers or bombs.
01:02 And you can play along down below as well.
01:05 Now, as of now, Disney doesn't plan to release a film in 2024 until March.
01:10 You know, Disney...
01:12 You know, before they acquired Fox, Fox kind of pushed them a little over the edge.
01:16 But they used to do like one movie a month.
01:19 When they were really in their zone, Disney would release maybe one movie a month.
01:23 And people, they had such a strong fan base, and their brand was so strong at that point,
01:28 that there were many moviegoers who just went to see Disney movies.
01:30 You know, a lot of people only go to see one movie a month.
01:33 I know, I don't understand that either.
01:35 But they're out there, and they're a large number.
01:38 And they used to always pick the Disney movies.
01:40 So Disney was doing great.
01:42 But now, that's not the case.
01:44 And now Disney's not releasing a movie every month, which is interesting.
01:47 But anyway, so they don't get started until March.
01:50 And that will be with Pixar's "Elio."
01:52 And the trailer, I think, was delightful.
01:54 But is this another movie that you could really watch on Disney+ right?
01:58 Like Pixar needs to start making films that just scream they need to be seen in theaters.
02:02 And they also need to stop making faux Dreamworks animation films.
02:06 I mean, some of them are quite good, but it dilutes the Pixar brand.
02:09 Remember back in the day, Pixar was the Christopher Nolan of animation studios?
02:14 They really have lost that.
02:15 Then, later that very month, Disney will release...
02:18 Like, so like nothing, and then two movies the same month.
02:21 Disney will release its live-action "Snow White."
02:25 Already a lightning rod of controversy.
02:27 Well, so was "Captain Marvel."
02:29 And that also came out in March.
02:31 And it made a billion dollars!
02:32 There were extenuating circumstances, of course, being, you know, between "Infinity War" and "Endgame."
02:37 But, and it also had "Skrulls" in the film.
02:40 But you know, still, a billion dollars is impressive.
02:42 And you know what else made a billion dollars in March?
02:44 "Beauty and the Beast."
02:46 So, this is a pretty good release date.
02:48 Now, "The Little Mermaid," though, another film that race-bended to Disney Princess,
02:53 did not make it to a billion.
02:55 In fact, it underperformed.
02:56 It wasn't a bomb, but it did underperform.
02:59 So we'll see what happens with "Snow White."
03:01 By the way, does anyone want to interview Tony-winning actor Andrew Burnap, who plays the Prince?
03:07 Or maybe play up the fact that Greta Gerwig co-wrote the screenplay?
03:10 Or how about the new songs from "Pasek and Paul"?
03:12 They are very good talking points for this movie.
03:15 Why is Disney not bringing them up?
03:17 And I would, you know, I don't know if Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot maybe should be front and center for the PR campaign, considering how it's gone so far.
03:25 All right, but I, you know, I gotta tell you, I think that movie might still be good.
03:28 It might still be good.
03:30 All right, you know, I wasn't sure at first, but some images leaked, which I can't discuss.
03:35 But if those are true, I thought it looked pretty good.
03:38 All right, then Marvel once again kicks off the summer movie season with "Deadpool 3."
03:43 And like Tom Hiddleston with "Loki," Ryan Reynolds is an excellent custodian of the Deadpool character.
03:48 This is a nostalgia fest for the Fox Marvel movies, and the fun will be seeing who Reynolds is able to bring back.
03:55 Rumor has it, and I've heard, he's bringing back quite a few people.
03:58 And also what he's able to get away with in terms of sarcastic commentary.
04:02 And again, based on some unfortunate leaks, it seems he's being allowed to go pretty far.
04:06 Oh, this is gonna be so great!
04:08 It will also be fun to see how Deadpool and maybe some other characters, because we know some of them are returning for "Secret Wars,"
04:14 how they will find themselves in the MCU by the end of the movie.
04:18 Lot of leaks, as I said, lot of leaks.
04:21 And that didn't hurt the box office for "No Way Home" or "Multiverse of Madness,"
04:25 but it did kind of hurt the viewing experience, particularly for "Multiverse of Madness."
04:28 Those leaks were true, by the way, it's just they re-shot the film so extensively because it tested so poorly.
04:34 With Disney employees, by the way, that a lot of that stuff didn't come to pass.
04:38 But I think there's a fine line on leaks, and I think giving away surprises is not the way to go.
04:44 My rule is always, if it's gonna be in the ad campaign, "No Way Home" pulled a crazy ad campaign.
04:51 You know, you would think that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would have been in the ad campaign, but they weren't.
04:57 But I feel if it's gonna be in the ad campaign, it's fair game.
05:00 All right, so, and but a lot of this stuff, these Deadpool leaks would not, well, maybe, we'll see.
05:05 Maybe they will now, because they've leaked.
05:06 What is your feeling on the line?
05:08 Where is the, where do you put the line for leaks?
05:10 Although, I know some of you just want to watch the world burn, or at least Hollywood.
05:14 2024 is also a big year for Disney trying to revive some major Fox franchises.
05:20 Kind of like, hopefully, Avatar worked out so well for Disney, right?
05:23 They're like, "Wow!"
05:24 It's like buying a blind box and being like, "Look what's in here, another two billion dollar entry!"
05:30 But while James Cameron is, you know, because like they didn't buy Fox for Avatar.
05:35 It was just fantastic frosting on the cake.
05:37 But while James Cameron is clearly the secret sauce when it comes to Avatar,
05:42 interestingly, Disney has picked very weak directors to take over Apes and Alien,
05:46 both hitting theaters summer 2024.
05:50 Wes Ball from the Maze Runner movies?
05:52 I mean, I don't care how good he was in the room or how good his pitch was,
05:56 he directed the Maze Runner movies, and nothing else since then.
05:59 I would rather go with a hot indie director who shows like some really, you know, although,
06:04 you know, let's see, I, I, Disney took all the interesting stuff out of Nia DaCosta,
06:10 it seems, for the Marvel, so I guess you never know for sure.
06:12 But I mean, I wouldn't, I wouldn't, I wouldn't gamble the Apes franchise on Wes Ball.
06:18 If he wants to do an original film, maybe I'll give him like 10 mil.
06:21 But the Apes franchise?
06:22 There's gotta be somebody else.
06:24 And then Fetty Alvarez has some credibility in the horror space for sure.
06:29 But look what he did to the Dragon Tattoo franchise!
06:32 He killed a dead!
06:32 I mean, to be honest, it really seems like these are direct-to-Hulu movies
06:37 that Disney's trying to float out as theatrical releases.
06:40 Like Prey!
06:41 I know some of you really enjoyed Prey, part of another iconic Fox franchise, Predator,
06:45 but let's be honest, it was, it was the right move to put it on Hulu.
06:49 Like in theaters, would you have thought it was as good?
06:51 I mean, I think as many of you liked it,
06:53 and some of you might have loved it and been like, "This is amazing when it,
06:56 if it debuted in theaters."
06:57 But I think the majority of you would have waited to stream it on Hulu.
07:01 So these seem like Hulu releases to me, which is not good,
07:04 'cause you know, we're trying to revive these iconic franchises.
07:06 Then Pixar has another release this year with Inside Out 2,
07:11 although considering how upset some moviegoers are,
07:14 and they're quite upset about Disney's messaging,
07:17 is Inside Out 2 really the franchise to continue with in that space?
07:22 Right? When we're in this space?
07:23 Here, Riley will be a teenager, so that should be funny,
07:26 dealing with her emotions, right?
07:28 But it's also a potential minefield when it comes to messaging.
07:31 Talk about a tightrope act for Pixar.
07:33 Also, while Inside Out is one of their most beloved films,
07:37 Pixar has always had a bit of a sequel problem.
07:40 You know it's true!
07:41 They, I mean, I mean, who can defend Finding Dory?
07:44 I mean, yikes. I'm nervous.
07:45 Then, if they make this date,
07:49 and they're making this movie very quietly,
07:51 Disney's live-action Lion King prequel Mufasa
07:55 is set for the 4th of July holiday.
07:57 It's weird, like, I mean, how is there no buzz about this whatsoever?
08:01 I mean, there was kind of buzz when they announced it,
08:04 and it's supposedly in production,
08:05 and maybe it still can be,
08:06 'cause it's basically technically an animated movie
08:08 if they did the voiceover work early before the actors strike.
08:11 But there's just, it's like, it's like a secret movie.
08:15 People love the Lion King, though.
08:17 Both versions basically made about a billion dollars.
08:19 And this will be a new story,
08:21 and it has a fantastic filmmaker at the helm in Barry Jenkins.
08:24 So that could be great.
08:26 And then Marvel returns as well,
08:28 double-dipping in the very same summer
08:30 with Captain America Brave New World.
08:32 I don't know!
08:33 I think this might be too close to Deadpool 3,
08:35 although that's all about the Fox movies,
08:37 and this is going to be pure MCU.
08:39 Also, as I said in my summer 2024 breakdown,
08:43 with Deadpool 3 paused for the actors strike,
08:45 pausing production,
08:47 maybe these movies will end up switching release dates back again
08:49 with, you know, Brave New World kicking off the summer
08:52 and Deadpool 3 opening up maybe at the end of the year?
08:55 Although Thunderbolts might not make it either,
08:56 which we're going to talk about in a moment.
08:58 So maybe Deadpool could take that date around Christmas.
09:01 I could see that actually happening,
09:03 because I don't even think the script is finished on Thunderbolts.
09:06 That's really behind.
09:07 But back to Captain America,
09:10 with today's climate,
09:11 Anthony Mackie has an unfortunate uphill battle
09:13 taking over the Captain America mantle in the movies.
09:15 Harrison Ford is supposed to help,
09:18 but Dial of Destiny seems to suggest otherwise.
09:21 Then yes, Thunderbolts!
09:22 Marvel is going for three movies in 2024,
09:25 despite, you know, people - even Bob Iger himself -
09:28 saying they've oversaturated the marketplace.
09:30 But they're still going for three movies in 2024!
09:33 Although again, Thunderbolts might not make it.
09:36 Both the writers and the actors are on strike.
09:38 Deadpool 3 is mid-filming,
09:40 but Thunderbolts still needs script tweaks
09:42 before it can even roll camera.
09:44 So it's pretty - I mean, although it is the end of 2024,
09:48 so maybe it could make this date.
09:49 But the longer the strike goes on, the less likely.
09:52 And again, I think Deadpool 3 might need this date.
09:53 The more I think about it, the more I like -
09:55 I like moving it around that way
09:56 and moving Thunderbolts to 2025.
09:59 So far away.
10:00 But anyway, Disney's not giving up this release date,
10:03 which is right before Christmas.
10:05 Usually it's a Star Wars or an Avatar movie,
10:07 but neither one is ready!
10:08 So Marvel gets the date.
10:10 Either again for Thunderbolts or Deadpool 3.
10:12 Feige has some chutzpah ripping off the Suicide Squad,
10:16 but then again, everybody loves the Suicide Squad!
10:19 And what a lineup of characters for this movie!
10:21 I love this lineup.
10:22 Plus it's from the creative team behind Netflix's Beef,
10:26 which had a controversy,
10:27 which I'm not even sure they survived,
10:29 but they're clearly very talented.
10:30 So I think this movie could be excellent.
10:32 I wouldn't rush it.
10:34 I would not rush this film.
10:35 Because I think it could be really, really strong.
10:38 Speaking of Disney cornering holidays,
10:41 Disney Animation always releases a movie for Thanksgiving.
10:44 And sure enough, they are holding this date.
10:46 But they have made no official announcement
10:47 as to what this movie will be.
10:49 Which is very worrisome!
10:51 That they still haven't announced it.
10:53 Like, what are they waiting for?
10:54 Let's see.
10:56 They're having a rough time over there too.
10:58 Finally, Disney has a small thriller
11:01 under the Fox banner called The Amateur.
11:04 But it has a strong cast,
11:05 even though it's a small film.
11:06 Rami Malek, Lawrence Fishburne,
11:08 and our new Lois Lane, Rachel Brosnahan.
11:11 At least she'll hopefully get good reviews out of this.
11:13 Because I don't suspect she's gonna get strong box office.
11:15 But that's okay.
11:16 I don't think anybody would expect that film
11:18 to have strong box office.
11:19 Okay, now for the fun part!
11:21 Well, not for Bob Iger.
11:22 He's sweating bullets!
11:24 But we get to decide which we think will be the guaranteed hits,
11:28 which are likely to underperform,
11:30 and if there are any bombs here.
11:32 And of course, as I said,
11:33 be sure to play along yourself down below.
11:36 All right, so hits!
11:37 I would say Deadpool 3, obviously.
11:40 That's gonna be a slam dunk.
11:42 I can't see Ryan Reynolds messing that up.
11:43 Thunderbolts, if it comes out in 2024.
11:47 I love the cast.
11:48 I love the creative team.
11:50 And what do you know, look at that!
11:51 Marvel still delivers two out of three.
11:54 I'm not putting Captain America in this category, unfortunately.
11:56 And I'll explain that in a moment.
11:58 But still, two out of three ain't bad.
12:00 So, uh, Marvel is still very valuable to Disney.
12:04 And I think Kevin Feige continues to be safe.
12:06 Uh, Mufasa!
12:08 I would put Mufasa in the hits category,
12:10 because I believe in the Lion King brand,
12:12 and I believe in Barry Jenkins.
12:14 I think he's gonna really deliver.
12:15 And I'm gonna also add Inside Out 2.
12:18 I know, I hate the first film,
12:20 and I said this was very risky,
12:22 but it has such a strong legion of fans.
12:24 I think this should do well.
12:26 Uh, I don't know if it's gonna make like a billion,
12:29 but I think it could do very close.
12:30 I think it could do well.
12:32 I feel good about Inside Out 2.
12:34 I mean, never underestimate Disney's ability
12:37 to shoot themselves in the foot, right?
12:38 They could make a decision where I'm like,
12:40 "Well, that's done."
12:41 But I feel, right now, I feel good about it.
12:43 Underperformers.
12:45 Sadly, Snow White.
12:46 But you know what?
12:47 I didn't put it in the bombs section,
12:49 which I'm sure some of you have already done.
12:50 Now, and yes, the movie will definitely have its haters.
12:53 But I think it could still post the Little Mermaid numbers.
12:57 And those were solid.
12:58 That was also underperforming,
12:59 but it was by no means a bomb.
13:01 Now, I'm afraid I'm gonna have to put, as I said,
13:04 Captain America, Brave New World here as well.
13:06 Because while Sam Wilson became Captain America in the comics,
13:10 technically, this is still race-bending a character.
13:12 And I mean, a lot of people who watch the movies
13:14 don't read the comics.
13:15 And so to them, it's a new idea.
13:18 And Hollywood has had a very hard time with that,
13:20 with race-bending characters
13:22 instead of original characters of color
13:24 like Black Panther or Miles Morales,
13:26 which have been extremely well-received by all audiences.
13:28 Also, after She-Hulk and Dial of Destiny,
13:31 I think a bunch of Hulks and Harrison Ford
13:33 are not guarantees either.
13:35 So I'm not saying, I'm certainly not saying it'll bomb.
13:38 But I have some concern it might be, you know,
13:41 when I say underperform, I'm thinking $500-600 million.
13:44 Bombs.
13:46 Elio.
13:47 Sorry, Pixar.
13:48 Again, I think this looks delightful.
13:49 But it just doesn't look like something that's theater-worthy.
13:52 I also have very little faith, as I'm sure you guessed,
13:55 in the apes and alien movies coming from those directors.
13:58 And while The Amateur might end up being a great movie,
14:02 I just don't think that Rami Malek or Rachel Brosnahan
14:05 can sell movie tickets.
14:06 I just don't.
14:07 I mean, Mrs. Maisel was never a ratings juggernaut.
14:11 But it could do very well, I think,
14:13 on digital and streaming down the line.
14:14 It could actually be very big on digital and streaming.
14:17 And we'll see if, you know, they go ahead and...
14:19 I mean, the only reason I can think
14:20 they might release it in theaters
14:22 is because maybe it's an awards contender,
14:23 especially with that cast.
14:25 But it's a CIA thriller?
14:27 So how is that a strong awards contender?
14:29 I mean, let's see what it looks like.
14:30 So let's see.
14:31 So I think 2024 seems like a pretty good gamble for Disney, actually.
14:35 They have a solid amount of, I think, very likely hits.
14:38 But true to form, most of the liabilities they have for 2024
14:43 they should have seen coming.
14:44 But you know what?
14:45 Some risks are worth taking.
14:47 Are there any 2024 risks that you think Disney is right to roll the dice on?
