Transcript
00:00 Excellencies, Honorable Ministers, distinguished delegates, ladies and gentlemen, good morning
00:10 and welcome to Nairobi.
00:15 It's called the green city in the sun.
00:20 Welcome to Kenya and welcome to the Africa Climate Summit.
00:29 I have welcomed you to this great city on behalf of the people and government of Kenya
00:39 to this meeting that is co-hosted by the Africa Union and the government of Kenya.
00:52 Let me give you a bit of information that will make it easy to find your way around.
01:04 Nairobi is a very interesting city.
01:06 On one side, there is a full canopy forest and on the other side, we have a wildlife
01:16 national park.
01:23 We keep the wildlife in the park because we have a fence.
01:30 But sometimes, as nature would be, they break away from the fence.
01:39 So while you are doing your morning walk, you might encounter a lion.
01:47 Please be careful.
01:50 It is not tamed.
01:53 It is wild.
01:57 Let me also inform you that Nairobi is the home of the United Nations Environmental Programme,
02:08 the only UN agency headquarters in the global south.
02:17 So discussing matters of environment, you are in the correct city.
02:25 And if you need any referencing, the UNEP is right here.
02:31 Let me also volunteer some additional information that Kenya, a few kilometres from where you
02:40 are seated, scientists, including myself as a scientist, discovered and located the earliest
02:54 remains of man on earth.
02:59 In other words, this is where humanity began.
03:08 Before you guys went all over the place in Europe and America and Asia and the rest of
03:16 our continent, this is where we all began.
03:21 And therefore, allow me to welcome you home.
03:30 And in a few months, we are having a conversation as Kenyans.
03:36 In a few months, we are seriously considering abolishing any visa requirement because it
03:47 is unfair to ask anybody coming home for visa.
03:51 Thank you.
03:52 (Applause.)
