00:00 >> [INAUDIBLE]
00:02 >> How do you guys feel like the
00:06 offensive line has improved?
00:08 I know you mentioned that in the spring that you all wanted to get more,
00:11 you got more bodies.
00:12 How has the line improved enough to allow you to kind of use that running game?
00:17 >> Yeah, we definitely feel good about our offensive line right now.
00:20 I think we got a lot of good pieces in the offseason.
00:22 A couple with some guys that have been here, they play a lot of football.
00:27 So we have a lot of experience up front.
00:30 A lot of guys that we can rotate in there as well.
00:35 We feel good about our depth of that position.
00:36 So that's definitely something we're gonna have to utilize in the run game.
00:40 Those guys have shown a good job of blocking up the run game.
00:43 And we definitely have some running backs that we feel confident in hand
00:47 the ball to.
00:47 >> Given the lifelong lessons and
00:52 teachings your father Oscar has given you and your brothers,
00:54 how do you incorporate that in your teachings and coaching?
00:58 >> Yeah, obviously my dad was obviously the first coach that we all had.
01:04 He coached us growing up in basically all sports.
01:07 So he was a big influence on us not only playing sports, but
01:12 then helping us achieve a lot of the things that we did throughout sports.
01:16 So you take what you learned as a child,
01:22 coupled with the things you learn along the way from other coaches and
01:25 use all that when you're trying to formulate how you wanna coach up your guys.
01:29 So definitely that's the first impact that probably we all had was our dad
01:33 coaching us up.
01:34 >> Yeah, right, when you guys do the game plan, do you formulate it with Jeff or
01:40 he signs off on what you do?
01:41 And then as the game unfolds, are you calling plays and
01:44 he says yes, no, and vetoes it?
01:46 Or how does it work?
01:48 >> Yeah, so we as an entire office staff, we sit together and
01:52 we start to formulate the game plan.
01:54 Jeff, obviously, he's the head coach.
01:55 He has a lot of different responsibilities, but he's in there as much as he can be
01:59 with us, formulating that game plan and putting all the scripts together.
02:04 He's involved as he can be.
02:05 There's times where he might step out and he can go sit with the defense.
02:08 He might step out and go with the special teams coach.
02:10 He might have to go do media.
02:12 Whenever he does that, then I'll take over the room and
02:15 we'll get the work done that needs to be done and
02:17 kind of fill him in when he pops back in the room.
02:20 But on game day, Jeff is calling the plays.
02:23 I'll be in his ear giving him suggestions and taking him through a lot of the
02:29 scenarios or what I think might be good in certain situations.
02:33 But he's the one that is calling it on game day.
02:36 [BLANK_AUDIO]
02:44 >> In terms of Jack's presence with his teammates,
02:47 what have you kind of seen over fall camp in these last couple weeks in terms of
02:52 his relationship and how he gets guys in the right place, helps them understand
02:57 after every play what they did right, what they did wrong?
03:01 >> Yeah, I think Jack has a really good rapport with the offense and
03:05 with the team in general.
03:06 I think it helped when he got here that he was basically the only one that knew
03:10 the offense, so he was able to have a lot of meeting,
03:15 player meetings with our coaches in there.
03:17 And he's the guy kind of up front leading the charge and
03:20 teaching those guys kind of what we were looking for and what we were trying to do.
03:24 That's carried over here in the fall camp where he's almost like another coach on
03:29 the field for us.
03:30 He knows the offense so well.
03:32 So well, he's been involved with our offense for a long time.
03:36 He's able to correct guys if they have made some mistakes on the field.
03:41 And I like to let him do that.
03:42 I think that shows leadership and guys respect that when he can step in and
03:49 give them the correct information and kind of coach them up.
03:53 You want that from your quarterback and he's able to do that.
03:55 >> How's Jack different from when you guys had him at Purdue,
03:58 as a player or just as a person?
04:00 >> He's just older, more mature, he's been through a lot more.
04:04 He was always very intelligent, very smart, understood the offense.
04:09 He's probably the fastest freshman I ever had at picking up the offense.
04:15 He was really good right away.
04:17 But he's just been through a lot more situations and seen a lot more.
04:19 He's able to calm his emotions a little bit more than when he was younger.
04:27 He can see it from different perspectives.
04:31 So I think he's just more mature.
04:33 That's what you get with a young adult from 18 to 22.
04:36 They mature a lot in those years.
04:37 >> Brian, when it comes to your wide receivers,
04:41 I think one of the things that you just said is when they feel like they have
04:44 a grasp of the player, the offense, they're playing fast and making plays.
04:47 But when they're not, there's some struggles there.
04:50 Where are they at right now?
04:52 Do you guys feel like they've got a good- >> Yeah, I mean, that's everybody.
04:55 That's everybody.
04:56 If you know what you're doing and you're confident about it,
04:58 you're gonna attack it with more veracity and more velocity.
05:01 If you're unsure, you're gonna have that little hesitation step.
05:05 So yeah, that's what spring ball, the offseason, with fall camp,
05:09 that's been about getting them indoctrinated in the offense so
05:12 that they feel that comfort level when the play's called, that they can go full speed.
05:18 I have no second guessing.
05:19 And they've done a good job of really picking it up.
05:22 And now it's time, you try to trim it down, kind of get them to focus on,
05:26 hey, this is what we're gonna be specifically doing this week,
05:29 as opposed to kind of fall camp and summertime was, hey,
05:33 this is the whole playbook.
05:35 We're gonna call it whatever, you need to know it.
05:37 So now they can hone in a little bit more on exactly what the game plan's gonna play.
05:43 >> Brian, how much different is it going into game one here at the alma mater?
05:49 Is it different?
05:49 Is there any kind of difference in the motion?
05:53 >> It hasn't felt different so far.
05:56 It's what we've been doing for a long time, getting ready for
06:01 football games, and training the offseason, getting ready for the season.
06:06 Now, once that kickoff of game one happens,
06:09 it might feel a little bit different now that it's back at the alma mater.
06:12 And we're always wanting to win badly, and
06:16 you need to want it that much more because of that situation.
06:20 But it's felt like the normal offseason, we're getting ready for football.
06:26 Here we go, we're excited for game one.
06:28 I think it's felt that way every year.
06:30 >> Going back to the receivers, Brian, Jamari Thrash,
06:35 is there a comparable player, not necessarily talent wise at Purdue,
06:41 but just with how you used him,
06:43 that you see him kind of filling that kind of role in this offense?
06:47 >> Yeah, so he plays the Z position,
06:52 which David Bell was in, which Charlie Jones was in.
06:56 He's in that type of role, that type of position right now.
06:59 >> Brent, I think you've always been in the booth, is that correct?
07:06 You've always been upstairs?
07:07 >> Yes, except for two that I've called.
07:09 >> Right, exactly.
07:10 >> [LAUGH] >> Do you like that position and
07:14 kind of talk about what the interaction you guys have
07:19 during games on the headsets and your kind of being the view you have up there?
07:25 >> Yeah, definitely the eye of the sky, everyone needs one of those.
07:29 And I provide that for Jeff.
07:33 Being able to see things from up top, you get more of the full picture.
07:37 You can see the full defensive outlay when you're on the field.
07:43 Sometimes things can get a little bit more jumbled up cuz you're so close.
07:48 But just being able to be up top, telling them exactly what is going on,
07:52 where guys are playing on defense, what we can do to expose them.
07:56 And really confirm or basically deny kind of what he thought he saw on the field
08:02 as we go through it.
08:04 And him having someone up there that he can trust is gonna give him
08:07 the correct information and good information.
08:09 I think it's very beneficial.
08:12 So we have a lot of good discussion between series about what
08:17 the defense is doing, what we need to be doing on offense,
08:19 how we're gonna attack coming out.
08:21 And that relationship has worked pretty well so far.
08:25 >> Thank you.
