Honda has made electric-bike versions of three of its iconic scooters: the Zoomer, the Dax, and the Cub. For this video, we’re reviewing on of those cute and quirky little two-wheelers. Meet the Honda Dax e:, now available in the Philippines via Popcycle Ebike Center.

This electrified Dax falls under the L1b category of the LTO, which means it doesn’t require registration or a driver’s license to operate, and it can be used in bike lanes. It’s being sold for P80,990. Think it’s worth the price? Click play on the video above and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

00:01 Honda has been releasing a lot of quirky e-scooters lately.
00:04 Of course, there's the Sundiro Honda S07,
00:07 and you've also seen the Muji Honda MS-01.
00:09 Now, we have with us today the Honda Dax E,
00:12 another interesting electric two-wheeler from PopCycle e-bike center.
00:16 How is it on a daily commute?
00:18 Is this just for show or is it really viable for daily use in Metro Manila?
00:21 [music]
00:31 [whoosh]
00:32 If you're familiar with Dax, then you've probably realized by now
00:35 that this is based directly on Honda's tiny classic motorcycle
00:38 that is actually still sold in neighboring markets like Thailand.
00:41 This is like a small trail bike with a small engine.
00:45 As cute as it is practical.
00:47 It looks just like the actual Dax.
00:49 Of course, the headlight, seats, and other equipment are different.
00:52 But the shape and overall silhouette are very similar to the Dax.
00:56 Actually, this is part of a trio.
00:58 Honda released three of these in China earlier this year.
01:01 The Zoomer and the Cub are also there.
01:03 Both of which are also available at PopCycle.
01:05 If you're interested in this, we will review it soon, so stay tuned.
01:10 Anyway, back to this scooter.
01:12 The electric Dax is powered by a 48V 24Ah lithium-ion battery
01:16 that drives the 400W Bosch motor at the rear.
01:19 This setup allows the bike to go up to 40 km/h.
01:23 And the max range is 70 km.
01:25 But of course, that depends on the load and the riding behavior.
01:28 Speaking of load, this has a maximum capacity of 120 kg.
01:33 It can also be pedal-operated, but in this case, the pedal is released.
01:37 And just like the other electric scooters we've featured before,
01:40 this is only in the L1B category,
01:42 so no need for a license or registration to operate this one.
01:45 Motorcycle helmet is enough.
01:47 And it can also be used with bike legs.
01:49 Now, the battery, just like before, can be removed.
01:53 Charging takes about six hours from zero to full.
01:56 Then, you can charge it straight from the e-bike
01:59 or you can remove it to plug it into the outlet.
02:03 And just like before, our advice is to rest the battery for 30 minutes before and after charging
02:08 to prolong the lifespan.
02:09 The only thing about this battery, though,
02:12 unlike the other electric scooters we've tried before,
02:15 it's a bit hard to remove.
02:17 They've put a Velcro so that it's easier to remove the battery from here.
02:21 But the overall job,
02:24 the plugging in the socket and the removal of the battery,
02:28 I admit, it's a bit of a hassle.
02:30 If you're going to do that every day, it might be a bit of a hassle.
02:33 Of course, it's still easier to just plug it in straight from the electric scooter,
02:36 but not all of us have that luxury.
02:39 If you're in a condo, you really need to remove the battery.
02:41 Now, moving on to the features.
02:43 Let's start with the lock.
02:46 This actual lock is for the battery down here.
02:50 To operate the electric scooter, you'll need this.
02:53 This is the NFC key that you'll tap here.
02:55 It says NFC.
02:57 And there you go.
02:59 It'll turn on.
03:00 Other standard equipment here include
03:02 this side mirror.
03:03 It's not just attached right now.
03:05 Of course, you have front and rear brakes.
03:06 You have a headlight.
03:07 You have turn signals.
03:09 And a horn that still works as a referee.
03:14 Then, you have a small display here that shows you the battery charge and the speedometer.
03:18 To turn this off, you'll just have to press this button or tap the key again here on the NFC logo.
03:26 Now, since this doesn't have a key, you won't be able to lock the handlebar.
03:30 But it has an anti-theft system when it's turned off.
03:33 You won't be able to move it because aside from the alarm,
03:36 the motor will stop the rear wheel from turning.
03:39 I'll demonstrate.
03:41 There.
03:43 So you won't be able to push it.
03:45 And it will keep on ringing.
03:47 It will turn off by itself, but of course, you can always tap the key again to turn off the alarm.
03:55 Then, at the bottom, you get 10-inch wheels and tires.
03:59 And you get front and rear disc brakes.
04:01 In terms of performance, this Honda Dax E is very good.
04:05 It can go up to 40 or 50 km/h, even for me, which is a bit heavy.
04:09 Just as advertised.
04:11 However, in terms of ride comfort, it is not as good as the SO7.
04:17 For one, it doesn't have a gulay board, so your seat position is not as comfortable.
04:21 And another, the seat is not that soft.
04:23 Then, you add that it is a bit small.
04:25 But then again, it's still what you'd expect from an e-bike.
04:27 If there is a bump, you will still avoid it.
04:29 And for the most part, you'd still like to be riding on properly paved roads.
04:33 Handling-wise, the Dax E is better because it is easier to use compared to other e-bikes and e-scooters that we've tried before.
04:41 It is a bit small, but it is fun to ride because the footpegs feel like you are riding an actual motorcycle.
04:47 Think of it as a pocket bike, but the seat position is more comfortable.
04:51 For a game, it is a fun ride.
04:54 And it is also very beginner-friendly.
04:56 Of course, it has electric power, so the range is quite wide.
05:00 But for the most part, if you are not good at riding a motorcycle or if you are not good at all,
05:04 you won't have a hard time using this Dax.
05:06 So you will have a lot of choices of e-bikes and electric scooters in the market today.
05:11 This Dax actually is not that far from others in terms of performance and capacity.
05:16 But it has a very distinct look.
05:19 However, at Php 80,999, it is a bit pricey.
05:23 It is like the Sundiro and Muji.
05:25 Although, in my opinion, it is still worth it.
05:27 Because just the novelty of it, the style, it is really a standout.
05:31 And you can add that it is very enjoyable to use.
05:33 Never mind that it doesn't have a lot of utility like other e-bikes because it doesn't have a gulay board or a box.
05:39 But for me, you can compromise.
05:41 There are adjustments you can make.
05:42 As long as it can get you from point A to point B and you're smiling while you're doing so, that's okay for me.
05:48 Now, if I were to give this a score, it's a 9 out of 10.
