00:00 How do you feel like the competition has been?
00:03 Obviously Jack has been a leader, but how has the competition been in the ring?
00:08 It's been the best competition I've had in my time here and other places.
00:14 There's a lot of great quarterbacks.
00:17 Jack's doing a great job of just doing what he's supposed to do in one spot.
00:22 There's a lot of things to learn from him.
00:26 And there's a lot of things to learn from everyone else as well.
00:29 Harrison Bailey is pretty good too.
00:31 Evan Conley is a veteran. He does really good stuff.
00:35 And these young guys, man, they got a lot of talent.
00:38 I really think that Louisville is going to have a lot of great years to come.
00:44 How did you go into Paul Gamby's mindset of trying to...
00:47 Obviously Jack is a good assistant.
00:49 A lot has been said about Jack and the position.
00:52 What was your mindset coming into Gamby?
00:54 My mindset is I can't control where I am on the depth chart.
01:00 What I can control is making sure that I'm prepared.
01:03 So whenever that opportunity does come this season, that I'm ready to go and step in and win some games.
01:10 Obviously you want to be number one.
01:13 My mindset is always to be number one.
01:15 But at the end of the day, you have to accept where you're at.
01:18 And you have to move forward and learn from the guy ahead of you.
01:24 Pick up on the things he's doing well.
01:26 And just trust God ultimately.
01:30 Trust God with what path he has you on.
01:33 I know that for me, opportunities come at the most random time.
01:38 They did last year.
01:39 And so it's a weird waiting game.
01:42 But it's also super exciting when it does happen.
01:46 You mentioned the youngsters.
01:48 As a veteran guy, what have you seen from Gallup Pierce as a freshman ball player?
01:52 He has great spin on the ball.
01:54 For a freshman, I remember I didn't have that kind of arm strength.
01:58 So he has a college-level arm already as a freshman, which is very impressive.
02:04 And then just coming from California, that's a high level of high school play in most high schools.
02:11 He's just a little more advanced than an average freshman.
02:14 Do you almost have that mindset of knowing you're going to play at some point?
02:18 I mean, after last year, you're going to play at some point.
02:21 Do you have to have that mindset for you?
02:24 100%.
02:25 If I didn't have that mindset, it would be really sad coming out of practice the other day.
02:31 So that's what kind of keeps me going is the belief and the hope that I am going to play this season.
02:38 Because without that, it's pretty sad.
02:42 How is what's passed for the quarterbacks under Coach Brom's system different from what you did last year?
02:49 There's a lot more reading involved.
02:53 Last year in Sats offense, it was very strict of one, two, three, four.
02:59 Where in this offense, obviously, there's still reads, but there's a little more flexibility of,
03:03 "Hey, make a play. Get a completion. Get the first down."
03:07 There's a little more of allowing you to see it a little differently.
03:13 Because both of them being quarterbacks, they understand that my vantage point out there is different than anyone else's.
03:21 Even him up in the booth and him on the sidelines.
03:25 You're on the field, and they just want you to take over.
03:27 And I really love that.
03:29 I think you're going to see really high-level quarterback play because of that freedom.
03:33 Brock has a follow-up. Was that an adjustment for you early on?
03:36 Because you were used to a certain system, and then it's more, kind of opens up the playbook.
03:40 Was it an adjustment for you?
03:42 At first, in high school, that's kind of how my high school and junior college, that's how my offenses work.
03:48 And then with Sat, I had to adjust to that very strict, which I got really adjusted to it.
03:56 So, yeah, it was an adjustment back, but also I'm familiar with it from years past.
04:04 And, yeah, I've adjusted pretty well in the sense of just going out there and playing free.
04:09 If that's what you want to do.
04:10 How would you describe the chemistry between the quarterback room and all the wide receivers on this offense,
04:15 especially with all the newcomers?
04:17 Honestly, pretty good for how many newcomers we have and how many quarterbacks we have.
04:22 We've been getting a lot of reps. I think in the summertime, the rule of not having the towels anymore
04:28 and actually having the footballs was huge for us, receiver and quarterback-wise,
04:34 because we're actually getting that timing down.
04:36 So I feel like we got a lot of timing down in the summer, even before fall camp,
04:40 and then obviously we've been getting a lot of reps in.
04:43 But, yeah, I think the timing's good. Obviously, we need to continue to improve on that.
04:47 But I think overall, really good.
04:50 What's the thing that jumps up most about the receiver corps, especially with the newcomers?
04:56 Yeah, I think that we're going to have a lot of transfer receivers starting for us.
05:01 Jabari Thrash, he's phenomenal.
05:04 What I really like about him is that when he gets the scramble drill, he just keeps moving.
05:10 And he's really good in and out of his breaks.
05:13 Kevin in the slot is really, really good.
05:16 He's just a savvy player where he finds the hole and he wins with speed.
05:21 I think we also have some veteran guys coming back, like Amari and Chris Bell,
05:25 that are going to be really huge for us.
05:27 So what's nice is I feel like we have a little more depth at the receiver position this year than we did last year.
05:33 All right. Thanks, Ron.
