Last week on July 27, the fate of seven significant Manchester developments was decided on by the council's planning committee at the last meeting before the summer break.
The proposed developments included hundreds of student flats which were approved, but a controversial block was rejected for a third time by the committee.
The 11-storey tower planned on the site of the former Gamecock pub in Hulme has been voted against twice previously, and due to opposition from local residents, the proposal was rejected again.
Six other developments were approved at the meeting last week, which means Manchester is set to see more tower blocks and affordable homes popping up over the next few years.

00:00 Last week on the 27th of July the fate of seven significant Manchester
00:05 developments was decided on by the council's planning committee at the last
00:09 meeting before the summer break. The proposed developments included hundreds
00:13 of student flats which were approved but a controversial block was rejected for a
00:17 third time by the committee. The 11-story tower planned on the site of the former
00:22 Gamecock pub in Hulme has been voted against twice previously and due to
00:26 opposition from local residents the proposal was rejected again. Six other
00:31 developments were approved at the meeting last week which means Manchester
00:35 is set to see more tower blocks and affordable homes popping up over the
00:39 next few years. Firstly student flats with a nine-story tower near Whitworth
00:44 Park have been given the green light by the planning committee. The council was
00:48 told some families are still living in the properties on the site where the
00:52 development is planned. However council bosses assured the committee that
00:56 families affected by the development would be rehoused and the plans to build
01:01 accommodation for 261 students were approved despite objections from
01:05 residents groups. Three towers for over 1,200 students near Piccadilly Station
01:11 have been given the go-ahead. New plans for the site to house three 16-plus
01:16 storey buildings on the Echo Street site were submitted to the council after a
01:20 student accommodation building and a nursery were demolished for three towers
01:24 in 2018. The initial project was stalled due to the pandemic and unlike the
01:29 original plans these tower blocks will be exclusively for students and almost
01:33 200 will be discounted affordable rent. The demolition of a Victorian building
01:38 to make way for a 14-story office block has been approved. National Heritage
01:43 groups have objected to the plans to pull down the listed Readham House built
01:47 in 1849 but council planning chief Dave Roscoe told the committee there is very
01:52 little left from the original building. Almost 5,000 square meters of office
01:57 floor space will be created under the plans and some grade 2 listed buildings
02:01 would be retained. The committee approved the application but it must now be
02:05 signed off by the government. A seven-story office and lab in Manchester
02:09 Science Park were both given the green light. The site is currently home to the
02:13 Greenhays building, two terraced houses, a furniture store and a car park.
02:18 Internationally significant health research organization UK Biobank would
02:22 be the anchor tenant and other organizations in the life science and
02:26 health care sectors would occupy the rest of the building. The building is
02:30 expected to create around 730 jobs. 22 affordable homes in Higher Blacklea have
02:37 been approved including eight apartments and 14 houses on the site of a former
02:41 nursery on Longhurst Road. This development is part of a Manchester
02:46 Council project to create hundreds of new affordable homes. And finally plans
02:51 to extend the Etihad's North Stand increasing capacity to almost 62,000
02:56 were also given the go-ahead. A nine-story hotel with 400 rooms will also
03:01 be built next to a new fan zone and event space.
