00:00 What's the first couple days been like?
00:02 I mean, you probably get a lot out of it.
00:04 I mean, you get a lot out of the summer, obviously.
00:06 What's the first couple days been like?
00:08 It's been good.
00:09 The guys, they have a great attitude.
00:11 I think they got a good foundation here.
00:13 I think we started this spring.
00:15 I think we just carried over into the summer.
00:17 The first two days, the guys had a bunch of excitement.
00:20 They've been energetic.
00:22 They've been open to listening, wanting to get better,
00:24 wanting to learn.
00:25 So, the first two days, man, I'm very pleased
00:29 with the first two days.
00:30 You've seen them come out yesterday,
00:32 started getting, shaking off the rust or whatever,
00:33 and then today, a lot of turnover from that secondary.
00:36 What's that tell you as a coach?
00:37 I think the biggest thing is just, hey,
00:39 every day we try to get better.
00:40 We kind of got a motto in our room
00:42 that every day we want to be better.
00:44 And I think today, kind of getting back
00:46 into the groove of things, the second day of practice,
00:48 getting that feedback wet,
00:49 and you saw the guys making plays.
00:51 The biggest thing, I want those guys to come out
00:53 and feel confident, that they feel good, consistent,
00:56 that they know what's going on.
00:57 That they can put their feet on the ground and play fast.
00:59 And the biggest thing is the pre-snap communication,
01:02 making sure it's through the lines of receivers,
01:04 the running backs, the whole line,
01:05 the tennis' cuts, splits, wide outs,
01:08 making sure those guys communicate.
01:10 We always say, allow them to come from the room.
01:12 When you allow them to come from the room,
01:14 you know what you're talking about,
01:15 you can make plays, most importantly,
01:16 you're a champion of this team, you're a better defense.
01:19 Steve, both Jarvis and Quincy talked a lot
01:21 about the competition in your position in the group.
01:23 Are you seeing that depth, whether it was in the spring,
01:26 now even with a couple new guys here for the summer?
01:27 Yes, we got this philosophy, man, hey,
01:29 iron sharpens iron.
01:31 You know, we got philosophies that it don't matter
01:33 who's out there, the job's got to get done.
01:36 And it's an old saying, that as long as the names
01:38 may change, the standard, it just stay the same.
01:40 So I know Contreras Clark left, went to the NFL,
01:43 it's the next man up.
01:44 Next guy coming, the next man up.
01:46 And we just want to preach that brotherhood,
01:48 'cause at the end of the day, man,
01:50 this defense is a fun defense to play in.
01:52 I love playing with this defense, Coach Hagan,
01:54 and Coach English has developed, it's fun,
01:57 it's quarterback friendly, there's enough food
01:59 on the table for everybody to eat.
02:00 You just got to do your job.
02:01 There's enough plays for everybody to make.
02:04 But the most important thing, you got to be capable
02:05 of your job, you got a chance to make a play,
02:07 make a play.
02:08 But competition is where it starts, man.
02:09 Competition makes us better.
02:11 When you say it's quarterback friendly,
02:12 how do you think the system helps corners?
02:15 It just, it gives you vision, it gives you flexibility.
02:18 We do a lot of things defensively.
02:20 We just don't play one or two days.
02:22 You know, but guys have to study.
02:24 They have to get in the minutia of the playbook
02:27 to understand the tendencies, understand the nuances.
02:30 They have to look in every nook and cranny
02:32 to figure out what I need to be at
02:34 at this certain spot, this certain time.
02:36 If they do that, you'll see what happens
02:38 if they make a play, it's usually going for the carcass.
02:41 - Jarvis.
02:42 - Okay.
02:43 - A come to part question, you were scrolling off of that.
02:45 How do you feel like the system plays to the strengths
02:46 of the guys that you currently have,
02:48 and how long do you feel like they've acclimated
02:49 from the beginning of spring 'til now?
02:52 - The biggest thing, they just feel each other.
02:54 And I think the great thing about being here
02:57 is we got a really good video staff.
02:59 We can get videos from a lot of different plays
03:02 that just show guys different techniques
03:03 and different things, NFL teams,
03:06 XFL, we show them all this stuff.
03:07 And when they get a chance to see those guys make plays,
03:10 and they get a chance to see yesterday,
03:11 'cause we had our hand at least 67 balls yesterday,
03:15 just didn't come down with it.
03:16 And so it was an emphasis on, hey, this is the tape.
03:19 These are the plays that we have an opportunity to make.
03:21 So that's what you do in your job.
03:23 Not that you gotta take that next step, make those plays.
03:25 And I think some of the day, those guys make a couple plays.
03:28 And the two part question, second part was what now?
03:30 - Just how well the strengths and then how well
03:33 they're acclimating, how do you think the system
03:34 plays to their strengths?
03:35 - I think this play is good because you look at
03:37 the system beforehand, the guys before the system
03:40 make plays, and they get a chance to watch,
03:42 take on the guys that have been in this system,
03:44 make plays, and may have, I mean,
03:46 it's defensive back framing.
03:47 You know, it's your job to make the play.
03:50 And we will try to do our best job with the staff
03:51 with those guys, those positions.
03:53 And hopefully you can build that trust.
03:55 When you watch that game tape, when you watch practice film,
03:58 it don't seem like it's 11 guys.
04:00 It's like it's 13 or 14 guys on just a vibe
04:02 as you go around.
04:03 And that's what you feel, those guys feel that trust,
04:05 they feel that accountability,
04:07 and they feel that brotherhood.
04:08 - Jarvis said that he thinks that this has a chance
04:10 to not only be one of the best secondaries in the ACC,
04:12 but potentially one of the best in all of college football.
04:15 Is that something you agree with,
04:16 based on what you've seen so far this season?
04:17 - Oh, I think, you know, our job as a moderator today
04:20 is what, Wednesday?
04:21 Our job is to come out Thursday, ready to roll.
04:24 And everything goes through for yourself.
04:26 But our goal, I love the optimism of him,
04:28 and I like for him to set high goals.
04:31 But our job is to get it done every day.
04:33 And right now, we're not focusing on that.
04:34 We're focusing on one thing.
04:35 How can you go Thursday and get it done Wednesday?
04:38 That's our goal.
04:39 - Steve, how good can Jarvis be out there?
04:42 He showed flashes of really good last season.
04:46 What have you seen from him,
04:47 and what are the good traits that you like?
04:50 - First of all, his stamina.
04:52 That's the goal.
04:53 You ask who his top player in the league,
04:54 he said Jaylin Ramsey.
04:56 Well, go back and study Jaylin Ramsey.
04:58 He's a worker, he's a grounder.
05:00 I mean, he's a grounder.
05:01 Like, he's a ball player, and he loves ball.
05:04 The first thing, he loves ball.
05:05 And Jarvis loves ball.
05:07 I mean, I think it testifies,
05:08 we had a kids camp this summer,
05:10 and he was out there all three days with the kids,
05:13 from sunup to sundown,
05:14 teaching the five, six, seven-year-olds
05:17 how to catch the football,
05:18 how to run routes, how to tackle.
05:20 He's a guy that loves ball.
05:22 But he's a guy that has a unique trait
05:24 of if he can catch the ball,
05:25 he feels when it's tough.
05:27 I think he has done an unbelievable job
05:29 in the weight room this summer.
05:30 I think he's up to one out of two right now,
05:32 so he's really invested in his body.
05:34 I think you can see it.
05:36 Coach Reno, from an explosive standpoint,
05:38 a pretty standpoint, just in his sprints,
05:40 and now, he's better.
05:42 And now, just got to continue to keep sharpening that rule,
05:44 and keep striking that match,
05:45 and keep getting better every day.
05:46 Secondary was one of the areas
05:48 that you guys hit hardest in the transfer portal.
05:51 What has been the challenge of bringing in guys
05:53 from different systems,
05:55 and making them understand all the nuances?
05:58 I think the biggest thing is that
06:00 you always ask guys this,
06:01 "Do you want to be the best?"
06:03 If you want to be the best, you want to play against the best.
06:05 I want to be the best, everyone's got to be the best.
06:07 And so, the better the receivers are,
06:10 the better they'll make us.
06:11 The better the DVs are, the better the receivers are.
06:13 So, we get to game day,
06:15 and hey, man, it's just like practice,
06:16 or not even tougher than practice.
06:18 So, we want those guys to compete.
06:20 But again, it's that competitive stamina.
06:22 Start from day one, to day two, to day three,
06:25 we stood ascending, and never descending.
06:27 But competitions, where is that, man?
06:29 The best guys want to play,
06:30 and the more guys we have,
06:33 the more ammo we got, the fire, man, it is great.
06:36 It's hard to play now, in college football,
06:38 especially this up-tempo offense,
06:41 you play in the ACC Conference,
06:44 and you plan A, you got to play the game in two corners.
06:47 Like, that's an awesome plan.
06:48 You put those guys in stress, you burn those guys down.
06:51 So, we want to have as many DVs as we can,
06:53 keep those guys fresh, keep those guys rolling.
06:56 But again, it goes back to this,
06:58 whoever's in the game, you're standing at the standard.
07:00 Doesn't matter what, if Quincy's in there,
07:01 Jarvis is in there, if Storm's in there,
07:04 if Trey Franklin's in there, if Marquise,
07:06 it doesn't matter, if you're standing at the standard,
07:09 whoever's in the role, whoever's in the game,
07:11 that's what we try to do at that point.
07:13 Jarvis was pretty complimentary of the strides
07:15 that Quincy's made since the end of that season,
07:18 through his effort in the spring,
07:19 and now coming out through the summer,
07:21 and now in the fall, what have you seen from Quincy,
07:24 you know, during that stretch since meeting him,
07:25 even though better football players?
07:26 I think the biggest thing is, for guys to get better,
07:29 they have to have one thing.
07:31 First of all, it's social maturity.
07:32 They got to be mature.
07:34 Once you mature, the night can break for me,
07:35 and say, "Hey, people have a fixed mindset,
07:39 "a growth mindset, this is what it was,
07:41 "now how can we grow?
07:42 "How can we take that area of strength
07:45 "and add on to it, but take the areas of weakness
07:48 "that make it a strength?"
07:49 And that's one thing we try to do this offseason.
07:51 Went back and watched all the techniques he had last year,
07:54 his good plays, his bad plays,
07:56 'cause you want to end every play with an exclamation point,
07:59 not a period, not a question mark, not a semicolon,
08:02 every play you want to finish it over
08:03 with an exclamation point,
08:04 that, "Hey, I dominated that play."
08:06 If it's 10 plays, you want it to be 10 to 10.
08:08 If it's 20 to play, you want it to be 20 to 20.
08:10 So we always talk about this song,
08:13 we say, "Every play, you want to finish it
08:14 "with a period and exclamation point."
08:16 - How have some of those post-spring newcomers,
08:17 like Storm and Cameron, how'd they look so far this fall?
08:20 - The guys were good.
08:21 The biggest thing about those guys, they're grown men.
08:23 They bring veteran leadership to the group.
08:26 They're grown men when they come in, it's all about ball.
08:29 Both of those guys are graduates,
08:31 they got high-level IQs, they understand football,
08:34 they bring a certain fatherhood to the unit,
08:38 because all of them got facial hair,
08:40 you took out the freshness in their hair,
08:42 you start shaving, yeah,
08:44 but you get a chance to see Storm,
08:45 you get a chance to see Cam, they're grown men,
08:48 and those guys understand ball.
08:50 And we're just delighted and excited
08:52 to have both of those young men in our program.
08:54 - You mentioned Poland, NFL Clips, XFL Clips,
08:57 is Jaylon Ramsey somebody you show these guys,
08:59 or who are some of those teams and players
09:01 that you guys kind of want the other guys to see?
09:04 - I think the first guy we saw was this Jeffrey Ragsdale,
09:07 you know, a little overgrade, you start off with him,
09:10 'cause you wanna start off with somebody first
09:12 that sat in the same seat you sat in.
09:14 You know, and everybody know LeBron James,
09:16 but we ain't never met LeBron James.
09:18 But when you get a chance to sit in that seat,
09:19 which I hear Alexander say,
09:21 they say, "Man, he sat in this seat,
09:22 "and he is the predominant top performer in the game,"
09:25 they give those guys the confidence.
09:27 And we watched a lot of his tape on this spring
09:29 and this summer, just when he transitions,
09:31 the way he backheld, the way he handled interviews,
09:33 he got a certain spotlight
09:37 when you see him do interviews,
09:39 he got a great smile on his face,
09:41 and we just been watching him.
09:42 And I think those guys really try to be a trademark
09:45 and just do what he do.
09:46 And the thing we talk about is,
09:47 "Hey, come to work every day,
09:49 "come to work every day and do a good job."
09:51 - Do you think some of their confidence comes from Jair?
09:53 - I think it does, I think it does.
09:56 Because when you see somebody that actually,
09:58 that plays at the University,
09:59 going to the National Football League,
10:01 and be one of the top players at that position,
10:04 that gives you confidence.
10:05 We can go back and pull up his videotape here
10:07 and just watch him play, man, it is a treat to see.
10:11 And actually know he's a really good player for Green Bay Tigers.
10:14 - All right, thanks, sir.
