00:02 - Look at me!
00:03 You did this!
00:05 - Hey, what's up?
00:08 Welcome to Screen Crush, I'm Ryan Aery,
00:10 and let's talk about the Easter eggs,
00:11 references, and little things you might have missed
00:12 in the final episode of Secret Invasion.
00:15 - And here we go.
00:18 - So for the most part,
00:19 I'm gonna keep my opinions to myself about this episode,
00:21 just so we can focus on the breakdown.
00:23 There is a lot of good to focus on in this finale,
00:25 and the episode does set up
00:26 some very interesting repercussions for the MCU,
00:29 like sets up new teams
00:30 and directly sets up Captain America, Brave New World.
00:32 In a couple of days, we will have a review video out,
00:35 but in the meantime, let's break this baby down.
00:37 The episode begins in the aftermath
00:39 of Priscilla and Gaia fighting off the Skrulls
00:41 in the Fury home.
00:42 - Oh yeah, that fight where shapeshifting aliens
00:44 broke in loudly through glass renders.
00:46 - Yep, that's the one.
00:46 One of the strongest aspects of this show
00:48 is the relationship between Nick and Vara.
00:51 Samuel L. Jackson and Charlaine Woodard
00:52 are able to imbue these characters
00:54 with an easy, lived-in energy,
00:56 even though we're mostly hearing about their relationship
00:58 and haven't seen it develop over other movies and shows.
01:00 They feel like a real married couple.
01:03 Fury says.
01:03 - I have dialed this number a million times.
01:06 - And the episode sheds some light
01:07 on why Fury went to the space station alone
01:10 and didn't bring his wife.
01:11 Later on, Gaia, as Fury, says.
01:13 - You know, the last thing I felt
01:16 before I flicked off, relief.
01:19 - Now, this was Gaia pretending to be Fury,
01:21 so we don't really know if this is how Fury actually felt,
01:24 but it would make sense
01:25 that he just wanted to put the scrolls behind him,
01:28 and that would include his wife.
01:29 After all, he spent years and years
01:31 lying to the scrolls, using them.
01:34 And if he was lying to the scrolls,
01:35 then that means he was lying to his wife for over a decade.
01:38 - But why couldn't Fury find the scrolls at home?
01:40 Aren't there like, I don't know,
01:41 like hundreds of planets out in the galaxy?
01:43 - Well, in this past video we did,
01:45 we speculated that the reason for that was twofold.
01:47 One, they needed to find a planet
01:49 that was far away from the Kree Empire.
01:50 And two, there would be a lot of anti-scroll,
01:53 anti-shapeshifting sentiment out there in the universe.
01:56 I mean, think about it.
01:57 In episode two, we learned that the scrolls
01:59 used to be a very war-mongering race.
02:01 - We did not end up homeless refugees
02:03 because we were unwilling to wage war.
02:05 We ended up homeless refugees because we were too willing.
02:09 - And it's pretty obvious
02:10 why you wouldn't want a shapeshifting race on your world.
02:12 They could replace you and take over your planet.
02:14 The scrolls probably did this for centuries
02:16 before their disastrous war with the Kree.
02:18 Now, one cool thing about this show
02:19 is the focus on Nick Fury,
02:21 who is kind of like the MCU's Batman,
02:22 who now has kind of lost his mojo.
02:24 - The fact that you don't know
02:26 tells me all I need to know
02:27 about this new, rather old Nick Fury.
02:29 - He has no powers.
02:30 He's not an alien.
02:31 He's just an exceptional human being
02:33 with an exceptional tactical mind.
02:35 But what really sets this series apart
02:36 is how it dives into what makes Fury human.
02:39 His life is filled with mistakes and traumas.
02:41 We see a broken man,
02:43 someone who cannot cope with his own failures and regret.
02:46 And that makes him so relatable
02:47 because everybody in the world
02:48 has faced difficult times and trauma like this.
02:50 I mean, I know I have.
02:51 I have gone through very dark times in my life
02:53 when I just hated myself and I couldn't see a way out.
02:56 But therapy can help.
02:57 And a lot of you may want therapy,
02:59 but you feel like it's too expensive or too far away
03:01 or you don't know how to get started.

04:04 Now, back to what I was saying.
04:05 Anyways, Fury calls to tell Vara goodbye
04:07 as we intercut between our two storylines in this episode.
04:10 One is Gaia's attack on the compound
04:12 that she used to call home
04:13 and the other is the hilarious standoff
04:15 between Fury, Ritzen, Sonya, and Rhodey.
04:18 Now, knowing now that it's Gaia and not Fury
04:20 walking to the base, it's a little bit harder.
04:22 Gaia believed in this place.
04:23 She trained and recruited soldiers
04:25 for Gravik's war in this place.
04:26 So, she knows exactly how to breach their defenses.
04:29 First, she walks by Beto's corpse.
04:31 Now, this is on the same spot
04:32 where we saw Gravik slit his throat last episode.
04:34 And this is a real heartbreaker for Gaia.
04:36 I mean, after all, she recruited Beto.
04:38 She brought him into this life.
04:39 And then she sees that Gravik has apparently killed
04:42 all the Skrulls that worked for him.
04:44 Why did he do that?
04:44 Well, they staged a coup against him
04:46 and this shows that Gravik never really cared
04:48 about the Skrull people.
04:49 They were just tools for him to get what he wanted,
04:51 more power and revenge on Fury.
04:53 Gaia also knows where all the cameras are in the compound.
04:56 So, she's very careful to keep up the old man Fury act,
04:58 stopping to cough and take iodine pills
05:00 to protect against the radiation.
05:02 (coughing)
05:04 Back at the most understaffed hospital on the planet,
05:08 Sonya tells Rhodey that Fury is closing in.
05:10 She does this to panic Rhodey,
05:11 so he'll move the president.
05:12 Why wouldn't you just keep the president in that room,
05:15 surrounded by security?
05:16 Because Sonya needed to pick off the security
05:18 one at a time.
05:19 Oh, okay.
05:20 I don't really understand, but you're the human,
05:21 you seem to know what stuff is.
05:23 So, Rhodey was arguing with an admiral
05:24 about ordering an attack on Russia.
05:26 And the admiral says that the motorcade attack
05:28 could have been a false flag operation.
05:30 What's a false flag?
05:31 Well, a false flag is just what it sounds like.
05:33 It's when a country's military
05:34 wears another country's uniform
05:35 and then attacks a third country
05:37 to kick off a war between countries two and three.
05:39 The Nazis employed a similar tactic
05:40 to justify their invasion of Poland.
05:42 Kingsley Ben-Adir gets his time to shine as Gravik,
05:45 especially this line.
05:46 - This face, this was the first human I killed.
05:50 - Man, like, I loved all this stuff.
05:52 Gravik was a very well-nuanced villain.
05:54 Him taking on the face of his first victim
05:56 is a way of connecting all of his crimes
05:58 to Fury's original sin.
06:00 All of this is only happening
06:01 because Fury used the Skrulls as soldiers
06:04 and didn't keep his word.
06:05 As Gravik said,
06:06 - And everyone I killed took a little piece out of my heart.
06:09 - Gut-wrenching.
06:10 Gravik also mentions Fury's invisible cloak,
06:12 which probably refers to the stealth mode
06:14 on the helicarrier.
06:15 Then Gaia lures him into the middle of the chamber.
06:17 Now remember, Gravik would never suspect
06:19 that she is actually Fury
06:20 because he has no idea the guy is alive.
06:22 And also, Fury is his weakness.
06:25 His hatred for Fury blinds him
06:27 and makes him put himself in a very vulnerable position.
06:29 Now notice the floor of the chamber
06:31 almost looks like a star chart.
06:32 Pretty neat detail since Gravik believes
06:34 that getting powers will lead to the Skrulls
06:35 finding a new home on Earth.
06:37 Now, even though this is not the real Fury,
06:39 he does land a line
06:40 that really hits at the heart of the show.
06:42 - Because it's easier to save the lives
06:45 of eight billion people
06:46 than it is to change their hearts and minds.
06:49 - This connects to Fury talking about growing up
06:51 in segregated Alabama in episode two.
06:53 He's seen firsthand how humanity is blinded
06:56 by racism and hatred.
06:57 - Coming out of Alabama,
06:58 we always had to ride in the color car.
07:00 - And this episode's ending proves him right.
07:02 Anti-Skrull paranoia has erupted all over the planet.
07:05 - Yeah, but shouldn't that have been part of the show?
07:07 That would have been so cool.
07:08 - Yeah.
07:09 Then he says,
07:10 "You know why I came back to Earth?
07:13 You.
07:13 You were the youngest Skrull on my team."
07:16 - And this is very clever.
07:17 Gaia has no idea if that's true or not,
07:19 but this is what Gravik would want to hear.
07:21 He would want to hear that Fury thinks
07:22 that Gravik is so important to him
07:24 because Fury is all Gravik thinks about.
07:27 For Gravik, it's also poetic justice
07:29 that he's getting the DNA of Carol Danvers.
07:31 After all, she was the one who promised
07:33 to find his people a home,
07:34 but instead of using her powers to help the Skrulls,
07:36 she spent a generation out in the cosmos helping others.
07:40 Replicating the powers of the heroes
07:41 was a major part of the "Secret Invasion" comic book.
07:43 The Skrulls imprisoned the entire Illuminati,
07:46 conducting experiments on them
07:47 to learn how to replicate their abilities.
07:49 Now, we should have known that this wasn't Fury, though,
07:50 when he said this.
07:52 - Wipe out some of the species.
07:54 I don't give a damn.
07:55 - And then back to the hospital
07:56 for what I kind of think is the low point for the MCU.
07:59 - Give me your gun, goddammit.
08:01 - Urgh, that's not good, person.
08:03 - Look, okay, I guess this particular president
08:05 just feels better if he has a gun.
08:06 Now, I'm sure they just needed him to get a gun
08:08 so we could have that big standoff at the end,
08:10 but maybe, I don't know,
08:11 like this bodyguard could have been shot
08:13 and then his gun could have fallen
08:14 on the gurney or something.
08:15 It is also weird that Ritson is in a gurney
08:17 instead of in a wheelchair,
08:18 but one thing this scene does sell really well
08:20 is how much of a stupid idiot Ritson is.
08:23 I mean, if the whole point of this show
08:25 is to show that this guy is a terrible president
08:27 who will soon be replaced by Harrison Ford
08:29 in the movie "Captain America, Brave New World,"
08:30 then I get it.
08:31 Hell, Fury basically tells us this is gonna happen.
08:33 - That's real one-term president stuff.
08:36 - All right, so then back to "Gravik,"
08:37 where Gaia's master plan is about to unfold.
08:39 She's in the middle of the chamber with Gravik,
08:41 who has no idea that he's about to give her superpowers.
08:44 - Hey, I have a question.
08:45 - Yeah, Doug, what?
08:46 - So her plan was to let Gravik make himself all-powerful,
08:48 and then she was just hoping that he would have her stand
08:50 in the middle of the machine, too?
08:51 - That's what we're going with,
08:52 but let's not get too bogged down with the idea
08:54 that she should have fought Gravik
08:55 before he got all the powers of every MCU character ever.
08:58 There is some fun cameos in here
08:59 that include all of the DNA samples
09:01 that Fury has collected,
09:02 and not just the people who fought in the Battle of Earth.
09:04 For instance, we see Ghost.
09:05 He would have had her DNA
09:06 because she was a SHIELD agent for years.
09:08 The names we see are Captain America,
09:10 Corvus Glaive, Thanos, Outrider,
09:12 Proxima Midnight, Captain Marvel, Abomination.
09:15 - How'd he get his DNA?
09:16 - Well, the Abomination was held captive
09:17 by SHIELD for years.
09:19 Then there's Mantis, Cull Obsidian, Drax,
09:21 Korg, Ebony Maw, Frostbeast, Hawk, Chitauri, Valkyrie,
09:24 Thor Odinson, pretty cool
09:25 to use his official full name there,
09:27 Gamora, Florus Colossus, that's Groot, by the way,
09:29 and the Winter Soldier.
09:30 And then Gaia and Gravik have a big fight
09:32 where they run through a lot of these powers.
09:35 And notice that these are only the heroes
09:36 whose powers are tied directly to their DNA.
09:39 Doctor Strange is not included
09:40 because his abilities are a learned skill.
09:42 And Wanda Maximoff is also not in the mix,
09:44 even though she is the strongest Avenger.
09:46 This is because her abilities are also mystical.
09:49 The chaos magic of C'thun has turned her into
09:51 - The Scarlet Witch.
09:53 - God, remember those days?
09:54 It was such a high bar for the MCU.
09:56 Well, this Ritson gun scene, it's kind of a low bar.
09:58 There's not a lot to break down in this scene,
10:00 just a lot of people trying to convince Ritson
10:01 that Rhodey is a Skrull.
10:02 It would have been kind of cool
10:03 if there was at least one scene
10:04 where there were two identical people
10:05 and Ritson didn't know who to shoot.
10:07 But all of this is pretty much the old cliche,
10:09 I'm not the imposter, he's the imposter kind of scene.
10:11 Again, if the point of the scene is to show
10:13 that Ritson is a stupid weak president,
10:15 mission accomplished.
10:16 Let's go through the powers that Gaia and Gravik display
10:18 in the fight, which was basically this scene
10:20 with a lot of MCU Easter eggs thrown in.
10:22 - All you had to do was go away.
10:24 Stop standing in the driveway talking about custody.
10:26 - First, we see the Extremis healing abilities.
10:29 Gravik starts with one Groot arm
10:30 and then a Cull Obsidian arm going for just brute strength.
10:33 Gaia counters with Trax's arm
10:34 as Gravik uses super strength to throw a car.
10:36 Now, I don't think he has the strength
10:38 of like the Hulk, the Abomination, everybody combined.
10:40 I think it's more like pick a power
10:42 and use them one at a time kind of thing.
10:43 Then Gaia uses Ghost power to face through the car
10:46 as Gravik suddenly has the ear of the Abomination
10:49 and the arm of Korg.
10:50 - Man, they got good at using those powers really fast.
10:52 - They sure did.
10:53 Gaia uses the Frost Beast abilities to create an ice arm
10:56 and then she uses the powers of Captain Marvel to ram him.
10:58 Now, as they're falling through the air here,
10:59 it seems like he's using Thanos's strength against her.
11:02 Like look at his arm here,
11:03 looks very much like Thanos's arm.
11:04 And she gains the upper hand by using the powers of Mantis.
11:07 - See?
11:08 - Then she flies above him,
11:15 striking a pose that is very Captain Marvel.
11:17 After he wakes up,
11:18 he uses the telekinetic powers of Ebony Maw.
11:20 You remember, this guy.
11:21 - Your powers are quick.
11:23 You must be popular with children.
11:25 - When he uses Maw's telekinesis,
11:26 he even makes like the same elegant hand gestures,
11:29 flicking objects through the air.
11:30 He also, for some reason, replicated Ebony Maw's rings.
11:34 He creates a Hulk leg to kick her,
11:38 and we've seen the Hulk kick like this before,
11:39 like here against Emil Blonsky.
11:41 - Is that where you go?
11:43 - And also here.
11:44 Gaia gains the upper hand
11:47 by going full Captain Marvel binary mode.
11:50 - What does that mean?
11:51 - Well, in the comics, for a time,
11:52 Carol went by the name Binary,
11:54 and she was this extremely powerful cosmic force
11:56 whose eyes glowed.
11:57 So in the movie Captain Marvel,
11:58 when she finally unlocked her full powers,
12:00 we called that her binary mode,
12:02 kind of like what Gaia does in the show.
12:03 And then she does a superhero landing.
12:05 - Superhero landing.
12:07 - Yeah, that's really hard on your knees.
12:08 - They're still doing those, huh?
12:10 - I guess so.
12:11 And now Gaia is by far
12:13 the most powerful Marvel character of all time,
12:15 probably next to Wanda.
12:16 Now, overall, I like the Super Skrull battle.
12:18 In the comics, the Super Skrull was originally
12:20 a Skrull warrior with his DNA altered
12:22 to give him the powers of the Fantastic Four.
12:24 But over the years, there have been more and more
12:26 Super Skrulls with different powers.
12:27 And just like in the comics,
12:28 they show their abilities by having them transform
12:31 a part of their bodies, like their limbs or their arms,
12:34 or like when Gaia grows Mantis's antenna.
12:36 And then Gaia goes to free the humans
12:38 that the Skrulls held captive.
12:39 There's the doctor who invented the Skrull machine,
12:41 the art dealer from a few episodes ago,
12:43 and of course, Rhodey and Everett Ross.
12:45 Now, we did not get the moment I was hoping for,
12:47 where Rhodey wakes up and says, "Where's Tony?"
12:49 But we did get something interesting here.
12:51 Rhodey can't walk, confirming that he was replaced
12:53 after his accident in Civil War.
12:55 So this meant that he could have been replaced
12:57 before or after Avengers Endgame.
12:59 So he may or may not know that Tony has died.
13:01 Now, he may not be able to walk here,
13:02 but remember, we saw Rhodey walking with leg braces
13:05 in Infinity War and Endgame.
13:06 Kevin Feige has said that Rhodey has been a Skrull
13:09 for a while, but I'm guessing we'll find out more
13:10 in the "Armor Wars" movie, if that's even still happening.
13:13 Who knows anything at this point?
13:15 Actually, Ryan, it's worth mentioning
13:16 that Rhodey is wearing a hospital gown.
13:18 Now, everyone else who's held captive here
13:20 seems to be wearing whatever they had on
13:23 when they were abducted by the Skrulls.
13:24 So we can assume that Rhodey was wearing
13:27 this hospital gown when he was taken.
13:29 So when was Rhodey in the hospital?
13:31 Well, Captain America Civil War,
13:33 when Vision accidentally shot him down out of the sky,
13:36 Rhodey fell down to the ground and was paralyzed.
13:39 Now, when Rhodey wakes up in this holding chamber,
13:41 we see him lean forward like he's about to start walking,
13:44 almost as if he is unaware that he's paralyzed.
13:47 So I think that it's possible that this Rhodey
13:50 has been sedated and held captive
13:52 ever since that fall in "Captain America Civil War"
13:55 and when he was undergoing surgery for that fall.
13:58 If this is the case, that means that Skrull Rhodey
14:00 was present for "Avengers Infinity War"
14:02 and "Avengers Endgame," which completely changes
14:05 the way we'll look at those movies going forward.
14:07 - That's a good point, Colton, thank you.
14:08 So then Ritson way overreacts,
14:10 publicly declaring Skrulls an enemy of Earth.
14:13 - That is why tonight I'm presenting to Congress
14:15 for immediate emergency authorization
14:17 a bill that designates all off-world-born species
14:19 enemy combatants.
14:21 - Idiot! (slaps)
14:22 - This is very similar to the ending of "X2 X-Men United."
14:25 That movie was going to end with the president
14:27 making a speech decrying mutants
14:28 until the X-Men stepped in to change his mind.
14:31 - Good morning, Mr. President.
14:32 - But in this case, Ritson sparks global chaos.
14:38 (people screaming)
14:39 (gunshots)
14:40 - Now you got dumb.
14:41 - Again, not the best president.
14:42 We have a video coming out really soon
14:44 about how this can set up "Captain America Brave New World,"
14:46 a movie I am very excited for.
14:48 I mean, think about it,
14:49 Ritson has just created a chaotic world here.
14:51 People assassinate politicians
14:52 because they think they're alien lizard people.
14:54 This, by the way, is the most realistic thing
14:56 I've ever seen in the MCU,
14:57 that people would become totally unhinged by this news.
14:59 So of course, amidst all this chaos,
15:01 a war hero like Thunderbolt Ross, played by Harrison Ford,
15:05 would win in a landslide,
15:06 promising to bring law and order to the entire planet.
15:09 Very similar to how Norman Osborn rose to power
15:11 after the secret invasion comics.
15:13 If the world is paranoid, chaotic,
15:15 then that's a recipe for the world governments
15:17 to become authoritative and take greater control,
15:19 which might explain why the original title
15:21 of the "Captain America 4" movie was "New World Order."
15:24 Anyways, Fury comes home, where Vara insists on finding out,
15:27 does he love the real her or her human face?
15:30 - Did you fall in love with me
15:31 or the face that puts you at ease?
15:35 - Which again, speaks to the larger question here,
15:37 can Skrulls ever be accepted by humanity?
15:39 If Fury can't accept Vara in her Skrull form,
15:41 then there's hope that the rest of humanity
15:43 can accept the Skrulls too.
15:44 And by extension, we humans can accept one another as well.
15:48 Really though, back to Ritson's decision
15:49 to like take revenge on the Skrulls,
15:51 it seems like he was just embarrassed
15:52 that Rhodey fooled him for so long and now he's acting out.
15:55 'Cause you know, he's a dumbass.
15:56 - Give me your gun, God damn it.
15:58 - I mean, that gun scene was stupid,
15:59 but it did show how he's the kind of guy who wants control.
16:04 You know, just the kind of guy
16:05 who would declare open season on Skrulls.
16:07 So maybe the gun scene wasn't such a low bar.
16:09 Let me know what you thought of that
16:10 down in the comments below.
16:11 And then Sonya meets up with Gaia.
16:12 - I will use you and you will use me
16:16 and together we'll make this planet safe for both our people.
16:18 - Now Sonya is basically trying to use Gaia
16:20 and the remaining Skrulls like Fury did, as her agents,
16:23 to bolster the power of her own government.
16:25 Now this might lead to Sonya forming MI13.
16:27 In the comics, this is a group of British superheroes
16:30 and agents who are tasked with taking down paranormal threats.
16:33 Other heroes have been teased
16:34 who could be part of this team,
16:35 for instance, like Dane Whitman's Black Knight.
16:37 - Sure you're ready for that, Mr. Whitman?
16:39 - I love the scene though of them discovering the bodies.
16:42 Very "Invasion of the Body Snatchers."
16:44 It's a great way to show
16:45 just how deep this conspiracy goes
16:46 and how many Skrulls are loose on the surface of Earth.
16:49 This image would have been very cool in an earlier episode
16:52 where it would have actually mattered.
16:53 Now, we do know that there will be some international heroes
16:56 in "Brave New World," like Sabre.
16:58 So I'm actually hoping that Sonya or her team
17:00 will come back in that movie.
17:01 Olivia Colman has been my favorite part of this show.
17:05 - The smart ones start talking earlier than that.
17:07 You a smart one?
17:08 Right, I didn't think so.
17:11 I'm very good at being your bestie.
17:13 I'm also devilishly good at being not your bestie.
17:16 It's really just a matter of taste, cake or death.
17:18 - In the final montage of the chaos,
17:20 we see that the Prime Minister of Great Britain
17:22 was back to being a human, but was then assassinated.
17:24 And this council member, the good one,
17:26 who rebelled against Gravix,
17:27 successfully fights off an assassination attempt
17:29 while Shooter McGavin was shot on air.
17:31 Honestly, like all of this is great
17:33 and really should have happened to like episode three
17:35 to raise the stakes of the series.
17:36 And then just as Fury is about to leave, Varah joins him.
17:40 And Fury has some good news.
17:41 - The Kree said they're open to peace talks
17:44 with the Skrulls.
17:45 - Which is nice.
17:46 It would mean that the Skrulls could stop running
17:48 and maybe join their emperor on new Skrullos.
17:50 Now we have seen the Kree sue for peace a lot
17:52 in recent years.
17:53 Guardians also began when they wrapped up
17:55 their hundred year war against Xandar.
17:57 - We signed your peace treaty, Nova Prime.
17:58 What more do you want?
18:00 - Also, apparently, Varah is a great diplomat.
18:02 - You're the best diplomat the Skrulls have ever had.
18:06 - Fury asked her to leave,
18:07 but she says that her work here is too important.
18:10 - All my work is here, darling.
18:12 And it's never been more important.
18:14 - Wait, what work?
18:15 What's her job?
18:16 She growing plants?
18:17 - I have no idea, dude.
18:18 Kind of seems like that you immediately would say
18:20 that peace with your people and their oppressors
18:23 would take greater precedence over growing some plants
18:24 in your greenhouse, but who can really say?
18:26 We then get a very sweet scene
18:28 where he embraces her true form.
18:30 - I just wanted to tell you that,
18:32 that I love you as I am.
18:35 - Only as you are.
18:38 - And then they kiss, giving hope that all of humanity
18:41 could one day live in peace with the Skrulls.
18:43 After all, if Nick Fury could eventually learn
18:44 to love his wife of 10 years,
18:46 then maybe all of humanity can learn to embrace
18:48 a race of shape-shifting extraterrestrials
18:50 that try to eradicate the planet with nuclear war.
18:52 Well, guys, that's all the Easter eggs we caught,
