00:00 Patriots beat podcast here on the CLNS media network Brian Hines from Pat's
00:04 pulpit joined as always by Alex Barth from 985 the sports hub and it was New
00:11 Year's Day Christmas morning whatever you want to call it today first day of
00:14 Patriots training camp down at Gillette me and Alex were there and it was as
00:20 you'd expect kind of for a first training camp practice right Bill told
00:24 us yesterday that these early days of the summer are a continuation of the
00:30 spring and OTAs pretty much there's no pads there's no contact as they've done
00:34 throughout Bill Belichick's tenure here they started in the low red zone so it
00:39 was pretty low-key but there were still some some competitive moments and some
00:42 stuff you could take away so I guess if you want to start with attendance quick
00:47 because that's what you do on the day of school it was yeah you're catching on
00:52 you're getting how these how these training camp podcasts work you gotta
00:54 make some throw some jokes in there right so but um pretty much perfect
00:59 attendance what we were expecting right other than the two players on the pop
01:04 Mike and when you and Cody Davis and I'm blanking on the Calvin Anderson on the
01:10 non-football illness list so yes just three guys missing but outside of that
01:15 Trent Brown there Tyquan Thornton Juju Smith-Schuster there and Jack Jones
01:19 there so it was good attendance everyone's passing their condition test
01:23 so a good start at that point for the summer yeah I feel like the last couple
01:29 years there's been a list of five or six guys at least that aren't present and
01:34 not to knock some of the guys that are on the list right now but Mike Owen
01:39 when who's the one kind of major loss that's the one potential starter in
01:42 Matthew Judon was limited he was out there we didn't take part in a lot of
01:46 drills but you know relatively speaking for where a lot of teams start camp
01:51 they're they're in good spot right now health-wise and after the spring after
01:54 everything that happened like you sort of alluded to there I think who was
01:58 there is a lot more notable than who wasn't which is always good
02:01 saw Juju Smith-Schuster we saw Tyquan Thornton we saw Trent Brown who I
02:05 thought looked good this is not a team that has a ton of margin for injury
02:08 especially at the positions of wide receiver and tackle which is the two
02:12 they were hurt at in the spring and it seems like that was not the Trent Brown
02:15 was hurt but you know what I mean it seems like that was just a spring thing
02:18 they seem ready to go now yeah Trent Brown was the big one to me I think
02:22 after because we've talked so much about that tackle position right how they
02:27 really need him there and the spring was shaky hit to put it lightly it was shaky
02:32 and and he he was here four days ago as Bill said and he looked he came back in
02:37 he got right in that left tackle spot and he managed pretty much a full
02:40 workload he looked good they ended practice with sprints like 5, 15, 50
02:45 yards and he looked like he handled those no issue so he looks kind of
02:49 locked in here and we'll get to his comments he spoke after practice we'll
02:53 get to some of the stuff he said later but but he looks good and that's a
02:56 promising sign up for that offensive line he looks good and he's back on that
03:01 left side or we'd seen him and that that seems to be the spot and that's a big
03:05 box checked on that offensive line in terms of who's playing where still didn't
03:09 get the full group we still don't have Callan Anderson out there so we can't
03:12 see them with all the tackles but still no Calvin Anderson still no Michael
03:16 Nguyen who but yeah to get to get Trent Brown there that's a major box checked
03:20 yeah but what they did have opposite of him that was Riley Reif a right tackle
03:26 he got first crack there Riley is this in I'm notoriously bad at like this guy
03:31 looks big this guy looks small like my sense of comparison is generally sort of
03:36 off but Riley Reif looks kind of small not like alarmingly small but he doesn't
03:42 look like they have so many tackles on this team obviously Trent Brown 683 70
03:48 but Connor McDermott not to Trent Brown's level it is another guy that's
03:51 very physically overwhelming I think he's like six seven three twenty three
03:55 thirty something like that you know even on the interior Mike own when it was a
04:01 really big guy Cole strange I know we don't think of him as big but he's like
04:04 six five six six I think Riley Reif is like six four three ten something like
04:10 that I'm gonna look it up so not say you give the roster there when you got here
04:15 he listed them at six six six six three ten so okay like McDermott McDermott
04:24 yeah McDermott six eight three ten so same weight but you know okay so maybe
04:28 maybe it's just the rest of their tackles being big it's very possible
04:33 that's it and also like Johnny Lumpkins around too and he's huge but yeah I
04:37 don't know I saw Riley Reif today I was he doesn't look as big as I remember as
04:41 big as I thought he'd look but yeah comparison probably doesn't help him
04:44 there yeah touchdown catcher Johnny Lumpkin today wasn't it did Johnny
04:48 Lumpkin caught a touchdown pass today so Lumpkin watches on I'm surprised we
04:53 didn't lead off the show with that we probably know what trust me we'll get
04:56 there neat like I've kind of discovered this and let me purpose this by saying I
05:02 still absolutely love training camp I was super psyched to get down there
05:05 today I got there like an hour and a half early as you know great time but it
05:10 doesn't hit I've covered enough of these now that it doesn't hit exactly the same
05:14 way and part of me kind of hates the beginning of camp now because it will
05:20 get into this it's all over exaggeration you're dealing with a very limited
05:25 sample size in practices that are very low intensity and it's all people have
05:29 to make their observations off of and they just go full in with that where I'm
05:34 just like when we get to the end of these days leading up to the first
05:37 padded practice yeah we're gonna do a lot of Johnny Lumpkin talk because it's
05:40 just gonna be there's only so many times and if you want to play a game along at
05:45 home I wouldn't do it as a drinking game because you're gonna get yourself in
05:48 trouble every time I say something along the lines of well we'll see what it look
05:53 like what it looks like when the pads come on or well it wasn't a padded
05:57 practice you can only say that too many times before it becomes the whole show
06:01 so no we'll have we are gonna have plenty of time to get into Johnny Lumpkin but
06:05 yes he did catch a touchdown yeah yeah I was talking to a deuce deuce from
06:10 pats.com over there and we were like oh it was so fun getting here this morning
06:14 but then we're like all right let's put the pads on let's get this going right
06:17 like it's so funny enough - I I don't even mean this is a bad thing I honestly
06:23 think it might be a good thing after the way last year went that might have been
06:27 the most uneventful training camp practice I've ever covered in terms of
06:31 they went out they did their business and they talked to us and they were done
06:35 like that was it there was no drama there was no this guy looked amazing
06:39 this guy looked horrible they just ran a practice which again compared to last
06:43 year feels kind of good you hope somebody pops eventually and somebody
06:46 will we've still got a long way to go on this thing but it really was just sort
06:50 of a cookie cutter practice today a lot of extra conditioning stuff that felt
06:56 like - that they usually yeah we'll get into in camp right like pulling the
07:00 sleds and stuff like that the sprints I don't think we've seen like ending with
07:03 sprints a lot in training camp so some extra conditioning stuff in the heat
07:08 always always good but they did there were some competitive seven on seven
07:15 eleven on eleven in that low red zone which they worked in exclusively today
07:19 that low and ends a red zone area which is gonna favor the defense right there's
07:25 no threat of a run game it's pretty jammed tight in there so the defense had
07:32 the upper hand and they kind of took advantage of it today I think there was
07:35 like seven pass breakups Kyle Duggar had a really nice interception on Mac Jones
07:40 his first pass and seven on sevens he was looking for a gusiki kind of right
07:44 up the seam and Duggar just kind of wrote on his hip right up and picked it
07:49 off so it was a it was a good start from the defense Sean Wade had a few pass
07:52 breakups Jelani Tavai, Mac Wilson got his hand on one Isaiah Baldwin had a
07:57 really nice pass break up in the back corner so active active hands from the
08:01 defense today in that red zone area. Yeah certainly and I think you know we
08:05 there's been a lot of talk about the quarterback numbers and this is where we
08:08 can get into maybe some of that. Yep. The rough day for the quarterbacks and I'm
08:15 not gonna lie and tell you it wasn't rough it was rough it was not a good day
08:18 Mac Jones was 5 of 10 with the interception also took a sack Bailey's
08:22 Appy 4 of 11 multiple passes batted down 0 for 4 and 11's Trace McSorley was 3 of
08:27 10 they are working in low red zone with zero threat of the run there's not a
08:32 ton of room to throw I'm not gonna hit the alarm bells for the season over one
08:36 day if it looks like this all week yeah we start having another conversation we
08:41 start talking about maybe Matt Patricia wasn't the as much of an issue last
08:44 year as we thought he was but I don't think that's gonna happen but no that
08:48 did the defense very active hands very active hands on defense Isaiah Bolden
08:51 had a nice pass break up as well to add to the group you put in that honestly
08:57 might have been the best all-around play of the day it was with Trace McSorley
09:00 but it was a back corner back shoulder fade I thought Keisha and booted booty
09:07 did a great job of like getting himself in position to make the catch got two
09:11 hands on the ball and Isaiah Bolden just made a better play to knock the ball
09:17 out like Keisha and booty did everything right Isaiah Bolden was just better on
09:21 that one specific snap so very active aggressive defense flying around had a
09:27 couple sacks there's Jabril peppers had a in a game would a clean clock Mac
09:32 Jones on it on a safety blitz on one of them so you know the defense is kind of
09:36 what you expect from the defense it's flying around their high energy they're
09:39 taking it to the offense they're not playing passively they're playing
09:42 aggressively and now the question is like so last year I remember the first
09:46 day the offense wasn't great it got worse from there but the offense wasn't
09:50 great the first day and I remember saying all right if you like were you
09:53 worried and I said not really because this is kind of how camp goes you know
09:57 the defense wins a day and then the onus is on the offense to come back and win
10:00 the next day and it becomes a back-and-forth you want everybody
10:03 pushing everybody I still believe that obviously that never happened last year
10:07 was just defense defense defense the offense couldn't do anything so here we
10:11 are again I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt can the offense
10:14 come back tomorrow and I'm not saying that they have to totally light it up
10:17 but can they push back and be like nope nope this isn't last year we're still
10:21 here we're gonna come out here and make plays as well yeah they did have a few
10:26 good moments right it wasn't like all bad I thought oh yeah no it wasn't I
10:31 shouldn't be comparing it to last year cuz I so one like yeah I won but anytime
10:38 you say there's one bad play me like let's be honest here for a second
10:40 right let's be honest I you I wasn't sitting near you but I'm betting we had
10:44 the exact same conversation first play of any team drill of the summer Mac Jones
10:50 throws a pick and I turned to the guy next to me I'm sure you turn to the guy
10:55 next to you and I just talked to Bob Sosi on the sports of hatreds podcast
10:59 which is up now on 98 from sports of calm Bob was telling me he turned to
11:02 somebody and said well here we go again because it was a very easy joke to make
11:06 but Mac Jones so if we go back to Mac Jones rookie year for a second the the
11:14 thing with Mac Jones his rookie year throughout camp like it got a little bit
11:19 better towards the end but this was a pretty pretty regular constant was Mac
11:24 Jones his rookie year was really good in camp until he made his first mistake and
11:31 then he would sort of teeter and you could tell like it weighed on him he was
11:36 a perfectionist and he didn't know how to move on to the next snap last year it
11:41 was just all bad like he didn't really get to see anything so for him to make
11:46 that mistake early and then come back and I shouldn't call them to say like
11:52 Duggar made it it wasn't his best throw but Kyle Duggar made a good play on the
11:55 ball as well but to have that pass picked off come back and I thought and
11:59 practice with a couple of nice throws there is one play he made that I forget
12:03 if it was to Henry or Gostic he was to one of the tight ends he just just fired
12:07 a ball into a tight window total confidence throw there's another play he
12:10 made where there's a pass rush he was able to sidestep it get the ball to
12:13 Henry again in the back of the end zone for him to throw that pick early and
12:18 then bounce back and start making some throws that's a good sign that's the guy
12:23 that's growing that's the guy that's more mature that's the guy that can
12:26 handle adversity better and I think those are all things that we want to see
12:29 from Mac Jones so not to excuse away his day it could have been better needs to
12:34 be better I think he will be better there is a lot to work on this isn't to
12:37 say hey you know Leslie Nielsen in in naked gun nothing to see here with the
12:43 fireworks factory exploding behind him it's not to say that but it wasn't what
12:49 it was last year like he was all right he made a mistake mistakes happen moved
12:52 on made some better plays like I thought overall even with the pick he had a
12:57 solid day it's easy to lump the quarterbacks together as a bad day
13:01 because Bailey's happy and treats me shortly did have bad days in max day on
13:05 paper is okay at best but I liked what I saw from him
13:09 zappy not as much try to Patrick Mahomes sidearms here at one point I don't know
13:14 why he did that again Oh for an 11s and I don't know how much trace me so I'm
13:20 gonna be able to do where he it was rough it was a rough day for a trace mix
13:24 orally killed a couple worms and then had the back the throw off the back foot
13:28 where he put it like into the first row of the stands but I thought Matt Jones
13:33 was fine if that's his best day of camp there's a problem if that's his worst
13:38 day of camp we can start talking about winning the division I think it's
13:41 probably gonna be somewhere in the middle but it was fine he was fine yeah
13:46 that's the confidence you want to see right probably a lot of it comes with
13:49 Bill O'Brien and and we mentioned a lot in the spring - he seemed to have more
13:54 of that control at the line of scrimmage right barking out signals hand signals
13:58 and yeah he called it the toolbox in that sprint and I think that could go a
14:01 long way to having those answers especially when he's facing a live pass
14:07 rush right you know maybe he can call out something and stop that to grill
14:10 peppers blitz and just help that confidence in total so I think that's a
14:14 definitely a good start there and hopefully he you know he keeps building
14:19 on that like you mentioned yeah and I think a couple things that again you saw
14:22 I'm making those calls today and in that's encouraging the other thing is he
14:27 after practice he spoke to me today and he called Bill O'Brien a guy you can
14:30 lean on and I thought I actually got to be down like right kind of on the
14:34 sideline well Bill O'Brien was coaching the offense at one point and there's a
14:39 energy there that just he's in charge he's in charge in a very comfortable way
14:46 guys when he speaks players listen you can tell that they don't have a problem
14:52 going to him they trust him for advice for coaching points you know how should
14:57 I do this how should I do that things like that so I think yeah no having a
15:01 coach he can trust probably does make Matt Jones more confident and it just
15:06 probably is going to help his mental health as well whereas last year you saw
15:10 some of those explosions well why is he blown up because he's nobody he can go to
15:13 I think this and he still might do it passionately we know right the call of it
15:17 was it the teapot Bill O'Brien I'm not saying you won't see the two of them
15:20 yelling at each other on the sideline but I I do think that that element of
15:25 trust in the coach is is big and he also for the right called Evan Rothstein and
15:30 Bill Belichick as well guys you can lean on so you see him kind of referencing
15:34 the coaching staff that way I think that's important and that's kind of
15:37 trickling down through the whole offense it kind of feels like cuz yeah and it's
15:41 it's gonna good point Trent Brown was you know he was talking about Adrian
15:45 Clement and Bill O'Brien and someone even mentioned like you know Bill O'Brien's
15:49 nickname is the teapot and he's like yeah I've heard that and but that's what
15:53 we need right we need that energy we need you know Adrian Clem what fiery guy
15:58 it's David Andrews called him yesterday Trent Brown agreed with that and he's
16:02 like there's there's energy back in the building and we needed that it was
16:06 necessary so just better vibes on that side of the ball and the confidence and
16:11 it should just all rise from there and hopefully they can keep building on that
16:14 and make it into more productive offense this season yeah absolutely the only
16:22 other another pass catcher caught my eye Ty Montgomery had a pretty good day
16:28 yeah he just makes plays on training camp fields it's just that's just what
16:33 he does and he had I think four touchdowns and but again you know it's
16:38 that low red zone work so almost any completion is gonna be a touchdown but
16:42 it was a nice like flat pick route almost like he scored on last year
16:46 against Miami for a score and then he had another one was at the under center
16:50 where he went up over Marte Mapu and hauled in a another one so another active
16:56 role and he's officially listed as a wide receiver now too so he's only
17:01 really practiced with wide receivers so it just looks like he's gonna keep
17:05 having a role here if he can stay healthy he practiced with the wide
17:10 receivers positionally he did line up in the backfield a little bit I did one of
17:12 those touchdown passes he came out of the backfield he I'm gonna get my hopes
17:18 up again he was the most productive player on the field today is the most
17:20 targeted he had the most catches he had the most touchdowns all of it I I don't
17:25 think it's an issue whether or not he can play you said he makes plays on the
17:27 training camp field he makes plays on the field period when he's out there the
17:31 one game in Miami last year he had a touchdown but and then he got hurt and
17:36 I'll get my hopes up because he can play and it helped their offense but what's
17:41 tough here is he's the kind of player that you have not build the offense
17:47 around him in the sense like we're gonna do everything based off time Montgomery
17:50 but a lot of the things you're gonna have him do are built for him I don't
17:54 know that there's another guy maybe it's Jalen Hurd if he makes the team like if
17:58 he's on the practice squad but I don't he doesn't have the I don't know that he
18:03 has the quickness like I'll say this about Jalen Hurd he's big he is big
18:08 seeing him walk around he's also very stiff hmm he doesn't doesn't have a lot
18:12 of quickness whereas Tom Montgomery's a ton of quickness so I don't know that
18:17 like if you lose time Montgomery you lose all that stuff that you put in the
18:22 offense with him and so how much do you put in with him like like how much how
18:28 many packages are gonna heavily feature him versus how much of it is gonna be
18:32 him just running generic stuff that maybe doesn't maximize his skill set
18:35 because well you don't have to throw out a quarter your offense if he gets hurt
18:40 early on that's the question with me at this point he can play I don't doubt he
18:44 can play he can play how much can you rely on him is is the big thing with him
18:49 at this point I'll just add to his item I notes the two pass catchers that stood
18:53 out look they were all in low red zone so I don't know the ball ever traveled
18:57 more than 10 yards in the air they weren't throwing the ball down the field
18:59 or anything like that we were juju caught a touchdown but we really didn't
19:03 see much from the receivers today time on covering the other guy that was very
19:06 involved they thought had a good day was hunter Henry made a nice catch in the
19:09 back the ends on a hands catch all that he looks good but yeah back to your
19:13 point on Montgomery I just I just he's ready he can contribute but how much how
19:19 much trust are you gonna put in him to be able to contribute on a regular basis
19:23 over the course of five months yeah which might have kind of been their
19:27 problem last year right like he went out and seemed like he was really up for
19:31 that third down back roll and then he gets hurt week one and they really
19:35 didn't have anyone to fill that role besides Ramon Dre Stevenson and then you
19:39 know we we all know how that went when he got worn down but yeah he can play
19:43 and Henry as you mentioned had a really good day he beat Christian Gonzalez on
19:48 the on one touchdown shook him off at the top of the route and then kind of
19:53 catch on a good ball from Mac so a lot of 12 personnel again Henry Mike
19:58 Kosicki those guys they look like they're gonna be big parts of this
20:01 offense and favorite targets of Mac Jones pretty much throughout the year
20:06 especially in that red zone area with their size and their ability down there
20:09 as long as they're healthy yep that's the caveat with those guys too so yeah
20:15 we'll see there but mentioned Christian's all as quickly there he was
20:21 right in the mix as good as he was in the spring he got beat once there but
20:27 really didn't hear from him the rest of the day and kind of what you want out of
20:31 your cornerbacks right right get a few nice plays were crossing routes he passed
20:36 him off I think Myles Bryant had a nice pickup on one so pretty good day from
20:40 Gonzalez I'd say and then looked like John Jones and Myles Bryant or man in
20:45 the other two corner slots for now Jack Jones kind of worked in but that seems
20:50 where they went in that cornerback rotation to start yeah more or less I
20:55 would agree with that we'll see maybe Jack you know he's had a rough month he
20:59 may he probably wasn't doing too much in the gym or in the field he may need to
21:03 play some catch-up here yeah and they might just be I don't do you think
21:09 anything has to do with if they're embracing for a suspension here they
21:12 maybe just let's see what we have outside of that or because he was
21:16 running with the starters at the end of the spring there so do you think that
21:20 could play a hand in any of this yeah I think that could that could certainly be
21:26 possible as well it's it's tough to tell it's it's such a unique situation I
21:33 agree other than that I mean it was nice just to see the offense kind of have
21:40 some juice some energy right cuz yeah like they came out with some energy at
21:45 the start of last year but then you know it was pretty pretty bad at the end of
21:50 camp but Juju Smith Schuster Kendrick Bourne really getting the crowd going
21:54 Hunter Henry after that touchdown big spike celebration getting everyone going
21:59 so just good to see them come out with that confidence that energy that juice
22:03 so good good building block to build off that yeah I'll give you a couple couple
22:09 other small notes I just had today Marte Mapu still in the red jersey so now
22:14 we've hyped up a lot what's he gonna look like in the full contact practices
22:18 he's gonna be able to do contact in the full contact practices but his role still
22:22 seems very multiple lined up at corner at one point today among many other
22:28 responsibilities so I thought that was interesting Malik Cunningham listed on
22:32 the roster as a quarterback everything else suggests he's gonna be a wide
22:34 receiver white jersey worked exclusively with the receivers etc and this is
22:39 actually a big one I think this is one that that you know a lot of people had
22:42 asked about Joe judge and when the coaching staff came out we talked about
22:46 this on yesterday you know where was Joe judge listed with the defense what's
22:51 gonna be doing etc etc I only worked special teams today only work to the
22:55 special teams like I said yesterday I think him being put with the defense was
22:58 just they did it that way because they did it that way there was no rhyme or
23:02 reason to it and then that begs the question for what is his role compared
23:07 to came a chord who's still a special teams coordinator it it wasn't entirely
23:12 this way because because they did a chord worked with the coverage guys as
23:17 well but I thought for the most part and maybe this was a one-day thing like this
23:21 summer gonna have to watch the rest of camp it was Joe judge working with like
23:25 the coverage specialists so Slater and Brandon schooler and Jordan Healy right
23:31 in that group and then you had cam accord with Joe Houston who's the
23:36 assistant special teams coach working with the kickers and they do have a lot
23:41 of bodies there this year they've two kickers two pounders two long snappers
23:44 and they've brought in obviously a lot of special teams coverage players as
23:47 well you know they added Chris board I'm sure that's mainly where Diego Figo is
23:51 gonna be for most camp he was most of today so maybe that's the the difference
23:57 in that would suggest that Joe judge is gonna take on much more of a game
24:02 planning role which I think is where cam accord came up short I think cam
24:05 accords actually really good coach it's the coordinator part it's a game plan
24:09 part where he falls short but that to go back to the main point though you don't
24:15 have to worry about Joe judge coaching defense Joe judge is not gonna be
24:17 coaching defense he him being put there on the website means nothing other than
24:24 maybe they just don't want it to look like cam accord got demoted that's might
24:29 be a bigger thing to there but yeah Joe judge is special that's where I kind of
24:34 I was hoping on like he does the coordination and cam a court is still
24:39 there to coach because he is a good coach I love you know when we get to
24:43 talk is on he is and everything he's really good to listen to so that's that
24:47 looks like where that was going that was the only other no I had that to bring up
24:53 I don't know if you asked thoughts there for for the practice today I think that
24:58 was pretty much it for more you know check out my notebook 95 sports of calm

26:23 post practice let's let's start with Mac I want to macro last because that's
26:29 kind of a more big picture thing it's not necessarily about about camp
26:33 expo kept a practice talked about the big one going around is his relationship
26:39 with coach Belichick right and yeah I think the quote was I think we're no I
26:45 think we're good right like his relationship we're good talked about
26:49 having a fresh start and I think when you read the quote I think we're doesn't
26:54 sound great right but when you listen to him say it he starts basically every
26:59 sentence with I think he literally said I think we're good I think that we've
27:02 all talked about is having a fresh start I think there's a lot of learning
27:06 experiences from last year that we've talked about that's just kind of how he
27:10 talks later and the press I think Matt Slater is a great teammate so I didn't
27:16 put so much on that but it does sound like they might have had a him and Bill
27:21 might have had a conversation here like last year's in the past let's have a
27:24 fresh start and kind of start new with Bill O'Brien here leading the offense
27:29 yeah I wouldn't look that much into him saying I think it's like me when I say
27:34 right at the end of a point it's just kind of a vocal crutch and we all have
27:36 them they're not fun to listen to but I think Max in a really good spot right
27:40 now mentally I think he has and we sort of got an idea that in the spring and
27:45 it's carried over but I he doesn't have the weight of the world on his shoulders
27:48 I think last year there was just this feeling that as the court whether it was
27:53 right or wrong I think he felt that as the quarterback it was his job to kind
27:57 of lead the team out of that mess and he was never gonna do that I don't think
28:01 any quarterback would have done that I don't even know Brady could have made
28:04 that thing work so now that it's kind of all in place around him and he can just
28:09 kind of focus on Mac Jones I I think that's what he likes to do I think he
28:13 likes to put the work in on himself I think he likes it to improve his game
28:16 and everybody else improving around him and he'll make that work so yeah I think
28:22 he's in a good spot I think today's press conference kind of showed that
28:24 yep and he kind of alluded to that he said like the big word for this training
28:28 camp is trust right like he's got guys he can trust around him now it's not
28:33 like last year you mentioned earlier he's got Bill O'Brien that he can lean
28:37 on so he's got guys he can trust and it just looks like he's in a better mental
28:42 you hope that now transitions to results on the field so yeah from Mac other
28:50 players Trent Brown also in a really good spot we talked about him a little
28:55 earlier he said he followed the same offseason program as last year which I
29:01 feel like people kind of forget he started all 17 games last year for this
29:06 team and so he said the same program as last year play all season again sounded
29:12 really excited to play under Adrian Clem Bill O'Brien said that energy juices
29:16 back he alluded to Clem being a former player and having a really good
29:21 perspective on that also Trent Brown I think I thought he was a good interview
29:26 a good spot today and that's exciting at that tackle spot Trent Brown has talked
29:32 about how important it was for him to play under Dante Skarnak he talks about
29:36 that a lot he's not a guy that speaks a lot his answers are generally very short
29:39 very generic if you ask him about Dante Skarnak he he'll talk because I think
29:43 that's a guy he truly respects that really means a lot to him I know they
29:46 stayed in touch etc I don't know what his relationship with Matt Patricia was
29:50 it's not to say it's bad but a lot of guys have said did you know who played
29:55 for Skarnak you have mentioned that playing for Clem who played for Skarnak
29:59 yeah they're playing for Clem there's a lot of elements to Clem as a coach that
30:03 they can tell came from Dante so I think for Trent Brown to have a guy who's
30:08 going to emulate Dante Skarnak yeah I think that's big I think that's big for
30:13 him because I think that that's the environment I think that that's that's
30:17 the philosophy that he thrives under and to get back in that philosophy is is
30:21 obviously gonna help yep I agree Duggar he spoke briefly they
30:28 asked him about his you know contract year he said all the right things I'd
30:32 love to play ball here but you know it's up to his agent that's he's just focused
30:37 on this year good start today obviously with the interception so he just said
30:40 all the right things there those were kind of the three I listened to I don't
30:44 know did you get to know bar more spoke I didn't I didn't get to bar more grow
30:49 spoke for a while so I was I was in on that yeah you wanted what were your what
30:54 was your well he had a lot of good things to say but what was kind of your
30:57 first big takeaway from grow so the big takeaway and I wrote about this pretty
31:02 extensively on 98 5 the sports of calm we have spent a lot of time we've not
31:07 just on the show we being like Patriots fans Patriots followers have spent a lot
31:11 of time talking about how the Patriots view the wide receiver position compared
31:17 to the rest of the league and it's been is this why they're not bringing guys in
31:22 is it because they don't value the position they value the position
31:25 differently and we've talked about you know I've talked about that that
31:28 coverage dictating wide receiver and you've all heard my spiel on that and
31:32 Tuesday morning meetings and who's gonna be the guy that you can't come off the
31:35 double when somebody else goes off and that's been my opinion of it and I've
31:39 always kind of hedged that by saying that's how I feel I don't know how they
31:43 feel so we had the the number two personnel person from the Patriots Matt
31:47 grows bill Belichick's number one he's the GM this guy answers to only
31:51 Belichick when it comes to the personnel matters of the team he was asked today
31:55 outright how do you define a number one wide receiver and he said we typically
32:00 in scouting we typically define a number one receiver who's a three down guy if
32:05 that players got inside outside outside inside versatility that's great but it's
32:09 a player who can go out there and it's typically an ex who we think of as a guy
32:13 who can go out there and get open on his own and then the hallmarks that we have
32:18 here get open catch the ball gain yards after the catch the more they can do
32:21 size-wise to be involved in the run game that's important as well that's what
32:26 I've been saying that that's the guy they need me and Matt grow have the same
32:31 definition of a number one wide receivers that's fun that begs the
32:36 follow-up question which was asked do the Patriots have a guy that they
32:39 believe is a number one wide receiver grow I think we've got a great group I
32:44 know wide receivers coaches Troy Brown and Ross Douglas are working hard with
32:49 those guys and I'm really excited about what they're good and going to be able
32:53 to do with those guys and working with the quarterbacks it's all about coming
32:58 together and it's not having this position or that position by definition
33:02 there's a sign around here that's been said hanging for a long time we're not
33:06 collecting talent we're trying to build a team however you want to define it
33:10 we've got to put the best team together that we think that's gonna marry with
33:16 what coach O'Brien coach Belichick want for our offense philosophy that's a
33:20 really long way of saying no no we have that number one guy and he was asked
33:27 about DeAndre Hawkins as well and I thought he kind of passed the buck on
33:31 that I think macro wishes they had more receiver I do I think Matt and whether
33:38 that's for bill whether that's from Robert or that that's a bill O'Brien
33:41 like there's not a lot of other guys who could be pushing back on that if that
33:49 makes sense but that sounded from Matt grow like he knows what a number one
33:53 receiver is and he wants one yep I got that kind of feel from him even
33:58 throughout the draft process right like he seems one of these like eyes that
34:03 knows the receiver position is really important to the game today but they
34:08 they just haven't been able to get one and you know if it was alluding during
34:14 the Hopkins question but he kind of said like the cap is crap right like he said
34:19 the dark secret you're not supposed to say like any team could go out and make
34:22 a move and maneuver the cap right now to get a guy but they just still haven't
34:26 done that so I get that same vibe from grow that he's looking in for one of the
34:32 rich dictator guys but they haven't got one so that does maybe kind of seem like
34:38 a bill thing to push back on that and not go get one of those the one other
34:43 thing he said I thought was interesting and I if you had any other takeaways
34:46 feel free to jump in here but the one other thing he said that I thought was
34:49 interesting he was asked about contract extensions and I don't have this exact
34:54 quote in front of me but it was something along the lines of personally
34:58 said he said they're always discussion that they're always open to it so I I
35:00 don't want the quote itself out of context I want to make sure I set this
35:03 up right because the quote itself makes it sound like he's not gonna sign a
35:06 contract extension with the player but we know we will he just signed to um the
35:10 quote was something along the lines of basically it's tricky to do a contract
35:15 extension because there's still a whole year ahead and you don't know what's
35:18 gonna happen and the player doesn't know what's gonna happen and the team might
35:21 have seen what might want to see more from the player before they commit the
35:24 player might not want to commit because they think that they're gonna be
35:27 exponentially better and I mean the first play that comes to mind is Kyle
35:30 Duggar and we've talked about a lot does Kyle Duggar take that leap this year to
35:35 that elite player status and is that you know if they're trying to get an
35:39 extension done with him I would understand why Kyle Duggar would be
35:42 hesitant to get an extension done and I think grow kind of I don't think we
35:47 necessarily learned anything from that I thought just grow outlined it really
35:50 well yep I got the quote he said do you
35:53 trying to get contracts done right now you don't have all the information the
35:57 player has got another season where you potentially don't know if his production
36:01 is going to be high or low there are a lot of factors that go into it health
36:04 durability role in the team leadership so with the whole nother season to go
36:08 that makes it tricky trying to gauge the market at these times but when we think
36:12 we can do that and obviously the player his representatives think that we can do
36:16 that that is when it's smart to get something done so so again I think you
36:21 just own winters his own thing I think he would be the easiest extension to get
36:25 done but I also just don't think he's a player they're gonna extend yeah we
36:29 bring you change to this too though I think for different reasons those two
36:32 players the market is very hard to pin down for Duggar he's on that borderline
36:37 elite status he could be a guy that potentially resets the market I don't
36:41 know who the other safeties are hitting free agency next year but he could be a
36:44 guy that if he has the season some people think he's gonna have could reset
36:47 the market as a free agent so that you really don't have a parallel to use and
36:52 then for who che we've talked a lot about this it's just the inconsistency
36:55 how do you gauge the market of a guy that 11 of his 13 career sacks happened
37:00 in the in one half of one season in a three-year career so I just thought it
37:07 doesn't mean the extensions aren't gonna get done it hardly means that but I
37:10 don't you know hearing that all right they still got work to do if they're
37:14 trying to get these things done if they want to get these things done they I
37:16 don't think it's close with either either Duggar or who che if that's kind
37:23 of the way Matt gross sees it yeah they yeah they could get done we've seen it
37:27 in the past like two years ago is God chow and then Jake Bailey Jake Bailey
37:33 that was a good extension got those extensions in training camp so they can
37:37 get done the only other thing from grow I mean he was asked about Dalvin cook he
37:43 said it's kind of like the Andre Hopkins right it's a unique situation that a
37:47 player of Dalvin cooks talent is available right now and he said they saw
37:53 him in Minnesota firsthand they know his abilities but didn't obviously didn't
37:59 say if they're gonna go out and show like significant interest and so I'm
38:03 thing but reading between the lines I think he did say that they've talked to
38:09 him because he kept comparing him to Hopkins which if they're comparing if
38:13 he's comparing the situation of the Hopkins situation they talk to Hawkins so
38:18 I believe - just outside of that I believe they've been in contact with him
38:21 I don't know to what extent it might have just been a is a million bucks here
38:25 if you want it like I don't it's a bit extreme but you get the point like I
38:28 don't know I don't think that they're the most aggressive team financially
38:32 when it comes to cook but I do think they've been involved I still don't
38:36 totally see it I still don't see how he makes that much of a difference
38:40 especially when you talk about what we're monitoring Stevenson can do I
38:43 still think adding a guy a tear down like Leonard Fournette or Zekiel Elliott
38:49 if you go a tear further than that I got like Benny Snell Kenny and Drake I still
38:53 think you more or less are gonna get the same impact and it's going to cost you
38:58 less which I know at this point doesn't really matter but there's also
39:02 Davencook's not coming here to play 15 snaps a game
39:05 Davencook's coming here to reset his contract and get paid next year and are
39:11 you going to put him over Ramon Dreyfus evenson which I don't think would be
39:19 right because I think they're comparable players I think Ramon was a better
39:21 player last year it's just I I don't if if cook wants come here for three
39:29 million bucks and read a spell back that would be great you could not find a
39:33 better spell back I just don't understand why Davencook wants to do
39:36 that and I'm not sure it's worth the Patriots changing their entire planet
39:42 running back to add Davencook for a year yep I'd agree with that it doesn't make
39:48 sense he wants to reset like get a one-year deal get a good chunk of money
39:53 still and then go like try to cash in next year even though who knows what the
39:58 running back market will look like I guess I'm not saying it would be a bad
40:01 move again I'm sure the Patriots would take cook as their spell like I don't
40:04 understand why Davencook's coming here yeah unless they pay him the most money
40:08 and unlike the hot like they needed to pay Hopkins the most money because they
40:12 needed a receiver they don't need Davencook they don't need to pay him the
40:16 most but if honestly if they go to the table for Davencook after they didn't
40:21 for DeAndre Hopkins I'm gonna be kind of annoyed so this is this is the guy
40:25 you'll push all the chips in for the running back and I look I stand with the
40:30 running back union but like come on so yeah it's it's a you have remanders are
40:36 really really good running back I don't want to take him off the feet like again
40:39 I want to playing less snaps to a point I don't want him becoming the number two
40:43 running back which I think happens if you signed out and cook us for what
40:47 you're gonna have to pay him you're gonna have to play him and you can't put
40:51 both of those guys on the field at the same time she's the reality of it mm-hmm
40:54 yep I mean yeah you take him he's a great player but to what extent what
40:59 money it'll be interesting now that shakes out but that's really all my
41:05 gross stuff I think unless you had anything else to add on to that I caught
41:09 your eye or from any other player I think that's about it that's about it
41:14 all right so we could wrap it up there unless you had any final thoughts on
41:20 practice or anything else I'm ready for tomorrow I want to see the I want to see
41:26 the bounce back day from the offense that's pretty much what I'm looking for
41:29 yep I expect a similar day tomorrow probably still a lot of red zone work
41:34 and again no pads they won't be in pads for a few days here so it'll be another
41:39 low-key day but there will still hopefully be some stuff to take care of
41:42 and we'll be back and having a show at some point so make sure you are
