Victoria's housing sector could be in for a big shake-up in the coming months as the government looks to help Victorians struggling to keep a roof over their heads. Daniel Andrews is considering making sweeping reforms to the sector and hasn't ruled out a cap on rental increases.

00:00 A calamitous week for the Premier ended with more rain on his parade.
00:05 You've been sent in for a relatively quick press conference today I think.
00:09 Darren how are you?
00:10 In Frankston for a progress check on hospital upgrades, the focus soon turned to home.
00:16 Housing, housing and more housing.
00:18 Within weeks the government is expected to deliver sweeping changes to address the state's
00:23 housing crisis.
00:24 In the mix is a cap on rental increases as well as limiting them to every two years instead
00:29 of one.
00:30 Everything is on the table.
00:31 There's a very long list of different policy approaches, different things we can do.
00:36 We're shortening that list down.
00:38 Rents have risen as vacancy rates plummet.
00:40 Symptoms, many stakeholders agree, of a desperate need for more homes.
00:45 For renters it will mean ultimately and over the longer haul that rents will actually go
00:49 up because there will be less supply of housing.
00:53 The government's challenge is pulling the right levers at the right time.
00:56 So you can't provide any more details on the planning and housing?
01:00 Not today because the government hasn't made any decisions about that yet.
01:03 Talk of a break on rent increases has been welcomed by the Victorian Greens who've been
01:08 pushing for a two year rent freeze for a number of months.
01:11 But with a parliamentary inquiry into the state's rental crisis already underway, the
01:16 state opposition says it's a smoke screen.
01:19 They're looking desperately for a distraction to get everybody's attention away from the
01:24 Commonwealth Games fiasco.
01:25 John Pursuto's federal counterparts want the Prime Minister to intervene after Victoria
01:30 abruptly pulled the plug on the 2026 Games.
01:34 There should be a really strong message going to the Prime Minister.
01:38 Already there's a strong message going to Daniel Andrews that this is just not good
01:41 enough.
01:42 The cost of walking away from the Games is yet to be revealed.
