00:00 A situation like Hunter Lawrence found himself in south wick.
00:03 You don't want to be able to change frames.
00:04 They want to make sure everybody is on a level playing field using the same frame they started
00:09 the day with.
00:11 >> Those are the same frames that the stock motorcycles come with.
00:13 We have a production rule.
00:14 It is time to go racing.
00:16 The fly racing 32nd car to sideways.
00:19 And real quick, we are underway at washougal.
00:22 >> Great job compared to normal.
00:24 Hunter Lawrence didn't get the best of start.
00:26 >> That is a Yamaha up front.
00:27 They are running different colors this weekend to celebrate Yamaha's 50th anniversary.
00:31 So it is Yamaha's just in white, not blue.
00:34 Hayden Deegan with the motorsport.com hold shot.
00:36 And Justin Cooper right there with him.
00:38 And it is Maximus Bowling to the orange.
00:40 KTM fighting for second.
00:41 And he takes it.
00:42 Now Bowling to the inside.
00:43 >> Great start by Hayden Deegan.
00:45 Maxim Bowling looked pretty great in practice.
00:48 Right now you see they threw a little bit of water on the track.
00:50 So it is important for these guys to get out and let this track go on.
00:53 And Austin Fortner is down again in the first corner.
00:57 >> Geez, just coming back from injury from a first-term crash earlier in the year.
01:01 I hope he is okay.
01:02 Meanwhile, Deegan on the 1993 look.
01:06 That's what Yamaha put on the graphics and the colors this weekend.
01:09 Machine in the lead.
01:10 And Cooper managing to wrestle second back away from Bowling.
01:14 >> Great start by all these guys.
01:16 And Hunter Lawrence, that gate dropped really quick.
01:18 And I think he got surprised.
01:19 But as far as the points, all the guys that need to beat him are in front of him.
01:23 So he's going to have to have another motor like he did the first race last weekend if
01:27 he's going to come up.
01:28 >> The green machine is Hamaker.
01:31 And then you also see Levi Kitchen on the 43.
01:33 And now we see Lawrence in ninth.
01:36 >> Now these guys are going into the shadows before the finish line.
01:40 And right now it's probably going to be the best time of the day because the sun is above
01:43 them.
01:44 But this part of the track is really tricky.
01:46 Going in, not in the shadows.
01:47 They put a little bit of water down.
01:49 And this place is really hard to pass.
01:51 So it's going to be a lot of work for these guys to be fast as we're watching Hayden Deegan
01:55 take off.
01:56 >> Absolutely.
01:57 He's going to lead the first lap here.
01:59 So Deegan who lost the points lead last week, the rookie, had the red plate, was the series
02:03 leader.
02:04 Subpar race off the podium last weekend.
02:06 Battle is on right now.
02:07 Kitchen trying to get around Hamaker.
02:09 And Kitchen is the local native.
02:11 How local?
02:12 He can ride his dirt bike to the track from his house.
02:15 >> Well, I came in here, the kitchen was wide open.
02:18 So you know Levi, he's got a lot of family and friends.
02:20 And although he lives here, this track is a lot different on race day.
02:24 But his problem is that he's watching his teammate Hayden Deegan run away.
02:28 And I'm liking what I'm seeing from Hayden.
02:29 He looks a lot more aggressive than he did even last weekend in the week four.
02:33 So I hate to say it, but I'm feeling dangerous.
02:36 >> Don't count this kid out.
02:37 Don't count out Hunter Lawrence.
02:38 Where did he come from?
02:39 He's now there challenging Kitchen.
02:41 He has made up moves and ground in a hurry.
02:45 Watch out, slippery down here.
02:47 >> One thing about Washougal, as you can see right now, the gap of where Hunter is compared
02:52 to where Hayden Deegan is, the gap gets really spread out.
02:55 And it is hard to make up a lot of times.
02:57 I feel like Hunter Lawrence is probably going to prove me wrong on that as far as what you
03:01 can do.
03:02 But yeah, this is one of those tracks that you can only go so fast.
03:04 And especially in the beginning part with the water being laid down, you can tell that's
03:08 why Hunter is trying to be aggressive and get around these dudes before things spread
03:11 out too much.
03:12 >> He's in sixth.
03:13 He's got Shimoda right behind him.
03:14 He's in third.
03:17 Now Kitchen is trying to find lines to get around Hamaker.
03:20 And somehow Deegan has already pulled out 2.3 seconds over Justin Cooper in one lap.
03:26 >> Another famous section here at Washougal, a little S corner.
03:29 You get down in the middle part of the track.
03:30 But as you can see, Hunter Lawrence slid out going off the side of the track.
03:34 And it's, one, the roost hurts.
03:37 That's one problem.
03:38 The other problem is that he's got his toughest competition with Hayden Deegan and Justin
03:41 Cooper in front of him.
03:42 But Hunter looks pretty good right now.
03:44 He's got to try to get around these guys before he gets into this one-line section where you're
03:47 going to have to follow.
03:48 And I see RJ coming up behind him as well.
03:51 >> Yeah, RJ Hempshire is there with Shimoda.
03:53 They're right behind Lawrence.
03:55 Lawrence on the red 96.
03:57 Kitchen right in front of him.
03:58 Shimoda sticking with Lawrence.
03:59 He's on the green number 30 right there.
04:02 And how about Seth Hamaker who has been a thorn in the side.
04:05 He's not in the championship fight because he only came back three weeks ago.
04:07 But he has been fast every week and he's in fourth.
04:10 >> Yeah, Seth has been one of the strongest ones for Mitch Payton.
04:12 It's good to see him come back.
04:14 And unlike red, I don't think he has to necessarily worry about some of those downhills, maybe
04:17 issues.
04:18 He's had a couple weekends to heal up, get that confidence.
04:21 And Seth has been running really good as you can see right now.
04:24 >> Looks like Hunter had a line on Kitchen.
04:26 Wasn't quite able to make the pass.
04:27 So he has to go to work again.
04:29 Really rough here on this racetrack.
04:32 >> Hunter is trying to square him up and get around Levi.
04:34 The one thing about why Shugo, when a guy gets on the inside, it's almost like you're
04:38 swarming around on a bunch of bees.
04:40 You try to go inside and outside and fool him.
04:43 This track is really difficult to pass.
04:45 A lot of these things you're going to have to make up some lines and maybe that guy will
04:48 make a mistake because he's worried about you behind him.
04:51 >> So Lawrence trying to put the pressure on Kitchen and force that mistake.
04:55 Hamaker fourth.
04:56 Bowlin third.
04:57 And now a 3.4 second lead on Cooper.
05:00 Two and a half laps into this race.
05:03 >> Yeah, Hayden is looking really good.
05:05 And just naturally the way this track works, these guys are battling up.
05:09 And except for like Justin Cooper has the opportunity to catch Hayden.
05:13 Hayden is doing a great job.
05:14 That's his pace.
05:15 But maybe Hunter Lawrence is faster.
05:16 But as you see, he catches Levi in certain parts and he gets held up which is allowing
05:20 Hayden Deegan to get away from him.
05:22 And that's why Hunter is really aggressive trying to get around these guys before he
05:26 gets to those sections.
05:27 >> That's got to be frustrating when you're back there like that.
05:29 >> It's frustrating because one, you know the guy in second is pulling away.
05:33 And the roost is -- it hurts.
05:35 It's terrible.
05:37 It's a bad scenario for Hunter right now if he's trying to get up front.
05:40 >> You're going to see the roll of Instagram photos from these riders on Sunday showing
05:45 what they look like under their jerseys, under their chest protectors.
05:48 Just giant welts.
05:49 You say it's like a BB gun?
05:51 >> Yeah, it's like the kids at home, the moms and dads, you leave a clay out, it dries out,
05:56 gets hard.
05:57 We roll those up in little balls and shoot them at them.
05:59 That's what these guys are feeling.
06:01 It's not a lot of rocks on this track.
06:02 But this clay, it clungs up to light clay.
06:05 And when you've got it shooting off over 100 miles an hour from these tires, it's probably
06:09 going to hurt a little bit.
06:11 >> So Hunter is just taking it right now.
06:12 Give you the monster energy racer update.
06:15 And what a run so far early for monster energy Yamaha star racing with Deegan and Cooper
06:19 first and second and kitchen in fifth.
06:22 Can kitchen hold off Hunter Lawrence?
06:24 Can he go after fourth place Seth Hamaker?
06:28 As we're into the shadows again and headed to the whoops.
06:31 >> Got to be really patient in here.
06:32 This is one part of the track that really never draws out.
06:34 So the whole track can be really dry, dusty, and you get in here, and if you're not paying
06:39 attention, it's moist, it's really loose.
06:42 So they got to be careful.
06:44 Great drone shot where you can see the lines where Hunter was going outside.
06:47 But it all funnels back in.
06:49 Once you get to that section, you really can't do anything until you get to here.
06:53 And then again, you're following.
06:54 So Hunter probably tried to go around the outside or stay up, stay near him and see
06:59 if he can make a mistake.
07:00 But I know he's getting frustrated.
07:01 There's only a few parts of this track he can make passes on.
07:03 >> We're going to head back toward where the starting gate area is and then the famous
07:08 horsepower hill.
07:09 Deegan now a 4.1 second on the field.
07:12 But Cooper in second.
07:13 And Hunter got another wheel on kitchen here but not enough.
07:17 >> Yeah, tough part.
07:19 As you can see, Levi cut on the inside.
07:21 And Hunter can't do anything but follow.
07:23 But this is an opportunity that maybe if he can stay close to Levi, he might be able to
07:27 get up horsepower hill.
07:29 But it's going to be making a mistake right there.
07:31 It's hard to run down those Yamahas when it comes down to horsepower.
07:34 >> What are you seeing, J.T.?
07:36 >> I was able to speak to Johnny O'Mara about what the approach would be for Hunter Lawrence
07:39 in this scenario.
07:40 And there's never any panic.
07:41 There's no real sense of urgency.
07:42 And we've seen him play this scenario out time and time again in moto one.
07:47 Just allow your pace to drag you to the front.
07:51 Believe that you are faster and by the end you will catch up and make organic passes
07:55 that you don't have to force the issue here.
07:57 >> He was able to make the most of this and get on the podium in most of the first motos
08:01 this year.
08:02 But he's also been fighting an injury.
08:05 Started with a big crash a couple days before a season opener.
08:07 As he started to heal up, another crash set him back.
08:11 And another crash last week.
08:13 So we asked him about the ribs yesterday.
08:14 >> Getting there.
08:15 Getting there.
08:16 We are in a similar position to where we were at high point, you know, last round of the
08:23 little four weekends, four race stints.
08:25 We're getting really close to being back to, you know, not in pain when we train and stuff
08:30 like that.
08:31 So looking forward to the two week break to just get my body back ready and come out swinging.
08:36 And hopefully no issues and dramas in the next three rounds after this one.
08:40 >> He almost made the move, yeah.
08:43 On a kitchen, couldn't quite make it as far as the ribs are concerned.
08:46 It makes it tough to run the normal riding schedule during the week.
08:50 But he says on race day a lot of it the adrenaline can help you through it.
08:53 We were talking about the roost before.
08:55 The dirt coming off the tire of the bike in front of you and nailing you in the chest
09:00 and the hands and the arms.
09:02 Obviously the helmet and goggles.
09:03 But you've got protection there.
09:04 But it hurts much more than it looks.
09:07 And that's what Hunter is dealing with right now.
09:09 >> One of the things is what J.T. Was talking about.
09:12 Hunter has been really good at allowing the race to come to him.
09:15 And eventually his pace will allow him to get up to the lead.
09:18 The only thing with this racetrack, I feel like Hunter looks just as aggressive as he
09:22 did last weekend.
09:23 He's trying to make the passes as we can see.
09:26 But he goes outside and he gets closed off and he gets stuck.
09:30 One thing that I'm looking at is that the guys besides Hayden Deegan aren't pulling
09:34 away from him.
09:35 So I think at some point Hunter can allow this race to come back because those guys
09:39 aren't pulling away from him again outside of Hayden Deegan that he'll eventually get
09:43 there.
09:44 But unlike the other ones, this track is Hunter is trying to make the pass.
09:47 He literally just can't do it rather than he's just waiting for things to happen.
09:51 But I think as this race goes on, maybe guys get tired and he'll be able to get around
09:55 those guys if Levi makes a mistake.
09:57 But he's trying as hard as Jason.
09:59 >> You saw Deegan.
10:00 He stretched it out to five seconds.
10:02 That's what we had.
10:03 Our leader on that drone cam for a moment.
10:05 And Deegan, the rookie, I thought we might settle into, hey, the title wasn't really
10:09 the goal here in year one.
10:10 I'm just trying to learn what it's like to be a pro.
10:12 >> Deegan is quickly firing today as Hunter Lawrence goes back to work on kitchen.
10:18 He's going to be the outside of the entrance of this corner just trying to make something
10:22 happen.
10:23 The battle box showing the leader on the right side and the battle that is third, fourth
10:27 and fifth.
10:28 Bowling, hammocker, kitchen, Lawrence.
10:31 >> I think for Justin Cooper, if I was him, I would be trying my best to get away from
10:35 Hunter.
10:36 We know he's going to come.
10:37 And you got RJ not too far behind him, which we already know he's coming.
10:41 So I feel like with those guys, Hayden is taking advantage of this.
10:45 Justin Cooper probably should.
10:46 But maybe these guys are just running really good.
10:50 It's just hard for Hunter to make those passes.
10:53 As we see, he's going inside and out.
10:55 I know it's getting frustrating for him.
10:57 But he's got to be patient.
10:58 Washougal is one of those tracks that you have to be conscious of the throttle.
11:02 You can't just pin it.
11:04 Otherwise you'll be on the ground.
11:06 Hunter knows that.
11:07 >> Hunter doing everything to get around the local native, Levi kitchen.
11:11 The kitchen is riding well enough to get back to the rear fender of hammocker, who's not
11:15 far behind Bowling.
11:16 So it's not like kitchen is slow.
11:18 In fact, he's trying to make his own move.
11:21 This could actually help Hunter.
11:23 Kitchen tried to set up hammocker and almost left the door open for the 96.
11:26 >> Hunter is trying to steal his eggs out of his kitchen.
11:30 Levi is not allowing that to happen.
11:31 You can see Hunter comes up to him and Levi just moves over, which is what he should be
11:37 doing.
11:38 >> Hunter is in a tough spot because now Seth is in front of him and kind of holding him
11:42 up.
11:43 So if Levi wants to make that pass, then he has to do what Hunter does, which allows that
11:46 opportunity for Hunter to get in inside, which he does right here.
11:50 So that was all caused because Levi is trying to figure out his way to get around Seth.
11:54 >> Hunter going for a two for one.
11:56 He got kitchen and he almost makes the move on hammocker.
12:00 Now at the bottom of horsepower hill, right-hand turn.
12:03 And this is a very steep, deceptively steep and extremely long climb.
12:08 >> And there's rollers going up.
12:09 And as you saw, Hunter made a mistake coming out of that corner.
12:12 What makes horsepower hill so special is that you really got to be conscious of getting
12:17 out of that corner really good.
12:19 At least if you're going to try to make a pass.
12:20 Not only lose that time, because if you slot out, you lose a lot of time and then you're
12:25 trying to make it up going everywhere else.
12:26 But Hunter is doing a good job at being aggressive but not ultimately overriding the racetrack.
12:31 Let's just see if he can get around Seth.
12:33 I think he might have a chance to close in on other guys pretty quick.
12:36 >> He tried to dive in deep there but was still stuck on the outside of hammocker.
12:39 Couldn't make it happen.
12:40 And then that slowed him up enough for kitchen and Hampshire to have a shot to get back around
12:46 him.
12:47 But he shuts the door on kitchen.
12:48 >> Yeah, that was tough for Hunter.
12:49 You saw him coming out, spinning in that corner.
12:51 So that's why I said he's got to be very patient not to override because you saw him spinning
12:55 up.
12:56 And this track is super slippery.
12:57 >> Watching Tom be out.
12:58 It went down.
12:59 It's tough for him.
13:00 Especially coming off a win a couple weeks ago at southwick.
13:01 He was trending in the right way.
13:02 Back to Hunter.
13:03 You saw that one mistake.
13:04 Now you can't even see Seth in the shot.
13:05 And he's got Levi and RJ all over him again.
13:06 >> Yep.
13:07 Bowman's up ahead in third.
13:08 Cooper is second.
13:09 And Hayden Deegan has set sail.
13:10 He has one career of moto win.
13:11 But he's looking for more right now.
13:12 And remember, he came into this race, he's got a lot of time.
13:13 He's got a lot of time.
13:14 He's got a lot of time.
13:15 He's got a lot of time.
13:16 He's got a lot of time.
13:17 He's got a lot of time.
13:18 He's got a lot of time.
13:19 He's got a lot of time.
13:20 He's got a lot of time.
13:21 He's got a lot of time.
13:22 He's got a lot of time.
13:23 He's got a lot of time.
13:24 He's got a lot of time.
13:25 He's got a lot of time.
13:26 He's got a lot of time.
13:27 He's got a lot of time.
13:28 He's got a lot of time.
13:29 He's got a lot of time.
13:30 He's got a lot of time.
13:31 He's got a lot of time.
13:32 He's got a lot of time.
13:33 He's got a lot of time.
13:34 He's got a lot of time.
13:35 He's got a lot of time.
13:36 He's got a lot of time.
13:37 He's got a lot of time.
13:38 He's got a lot of time.
13:39 He's got a lot of time.
13:40 He's got a lot of time.
13:41 He's got a lot of time.
13:42 He's got a lot of time.
13:43 He's got a lot of time.
13:44 He's got a lot of time.
13:45 He's got a lot of time.
13:46 He's got a lot of time.
13:47 He's got a lot of time.
13:48 He's got a lot of time.
13:49 He's got a lot of time.
13:50 He's got a lot of time.
13:51 He's got a lot of time.
13:52 He's got a lot of time.
13:53 He's got a lot of time.
13:54 He's got a lot of time.
13:55 He's got a lot of time.
13:56 He's got a lot of time.
13:57 He's got a lot of time.
13:58 He's got a lot of time.
13:59 He's got a lot of time.
14:00 He's got a lot of time.
14:01 He's got a lot of time.
14:02 He's got a lot of time.
14:03 He's got a lot of time.
14:04 He's got a lot of time.
14:05 He's got a lot of time.
14:06 He's got a lot of time.
14:07 He's got a lot of time.
14:08 He's got a lot of time.
14:09 He's got a lot of time.
14:10 He's got a lot of time.
14:11 He's got a lot of time.
14:12 He's got a lot of time.
14:13 He's got a lot of time.
14:14 He's got a lot of time.
14:15 He's got a lot of time.
14:16 He's got a lot of time.
14:17 He's got a lot of time.
14:18 He's got a lot of time.
14:19 He's got a lot of time.
14:20 He's got a lot of time.
14:21 He's got a lot of time.
14:22 He's got a lot of time.
14:23 He's got a lot of time.
14:24 He's got a lot of time.
14:26 >> Hopefully he catches the guy sleeping.
14:27 Let's see what hunter does here.
14:28 >> We talked about how he lets the race come to him in the first four races.
14:29 Hunter won the overall.
14:30 His first moto scores were 3.323 in the first four rounds.
14:31 Then he got a better start in moto two and took care of the day.
14:32 We'll see if that plays out again for him.
14:33 It's early in the first moto.
14:34 He's back here in fifth.
14:35 >> He's got a lot of time.
14:36 He's got a lot of time.
14:37 He's got a lot of time.
14:38 He's got a lot of time.
14:39 He's got a lot of time.
14:40 He's got a lot of time.
14:41 He's got a lot of time.
14:42 He's got a lot of time.
14:43 He's got a lot of time.
14:44 He's got a lot of time.
14:45 He's got a lot of time.
15:06 He's got a lot of time.
15:07 He's got a lot of time.
15:08 He's got a lot of time.
15:09 He's got a lot of time.
15:10 He's got a lot of time.
15:11 He's got a lot of time.
15:12 He's got a lot of time.
15:13 He's got a lot of time.
15:14 He's got a lot of time.
15:15 He's got a lot of time.
15:16 He's got a lot of time.

16:54 He's got a lot of time.
16:55 He's got a lot of time.
16:57 >> Going to work on Maximus Bowen now is Lawrence.
17:02 >> Yeah, Hunter looks like he's found the flow.
17:04 Right before we went to J.T., he had his feet on the pegs and railed that corner.
17:09 So, Hunter is definitely in a good position.
17:11 And the most important part, Justin Cooper isn't pulling away.
17:15 So, he's still closing.
17:16 He doesn't have the pressure on.
17:17 As you can see, he's able to get away from these guys and also close up on them.
17:21 So, even at the end of the day, Hayden Deegan is not too far.
17:24 If Hunter can continue this pace, I wouldn't be surprised if he closed down on Hayden Deegan.
17:28 But the first goal is get around Max right now.
17:30 >> Yeah, he did make up six seconds once he got to second place last week.
17:34 It was Joe Shimoda leading by six seconds.
17:36 Hunter got there.
17:37 Hunter is able to close that gap and go on to win the Moto.
17:40 But, yeah, first things first, he's got to work on Bowen for third.
17:43 And that would be huge if he could get to Justin Cooper in second.
17:47 >> There's the shadows I was talking about earlier.
17:52 It's really difficult.
17:53 And it's only going to get worse because now the shadows is straight--the sun is straight above us right now.
17:58 So, this is going to be the best light.
18:00 It's going to be on the other side.
18:01 So, these guys are going to have to deal with these shadows getting even longer and longer.
18:04 And, again, that section that they water, it's going to be wet all day long.
18:08 So, if you're not conscious, you can get in there and make a mistake really quick and ruin your day.
18:13 >> Yeah, so, the lighting obviously changes with sun to shadow.
18:15 But you're saying the dirt doesn't dry out as much in those shadow sections.
18:18 So, does the dirt really feel different down there?
18:20 >> Oh, it's night and day difference.
18:22 So, if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:24 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the water.
18:26 So, if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:28 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the water.
18:30 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:32 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:34 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:36 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:38 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:40 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:42 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:44 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:46 And if you're not conscious, you can't see the shadows.
18:48 >> You literally cannot see at all until your eyes adjust.
18:52 >> No, it's a big -- we're talking about the roost here.
18:54 And if you haven't got roosted by a 450 motorcycle, it's kind of hard to explain.
18:58 But all I can say -- it hurts really bad.
19:01 But you know when you're in a movie, if you go to a daytime movie and you're in that thing all day, as soon as you walk out, the light, it takes your eyes a few seconds to adjust.
19:10 Well, these guys are doing that at a high-speed pace riding a motorcycle all while trying to pass.
19:14 So that's why you'll see a lot of these guys when they get up in those sections, they'll try to make a pass, but then they'll actually sit back because the likelihood of, one, you can't see, you can run in the back of the guy or the guy in front of you can make a mistake.
19:26 So, yeah, there's parts of this track, and that shadow section is very tough for these guys.
19:31 >> Lawrence needs to make up a little bit of ground on Boland, who is alone now in third.
19:36 Got about 5 to 10 bike lengths on your series leader, Lawrence.
19:41 Cooper all alone in second, and Deegan, man, what a bounce back by him.
19:46 Southwick and Millville, not great races, not on the podium in any of the four motos, but, boy, has he bounced back big time today.
19:53 >> Yeah, and you wonder if that had to do with the red plate and since he inherited that.
19:59 He is a rookie, so next time he has that, he'll be better.
20:02 But was that part of the red plate or was just those two tracks?
20:05 I expect Deegan to be back to the form, at least be more comfortable here compared to what he was at Southwick and maybe even Millville.
20:12 Just because of Dirk, he is from California, it is hard pack, so just like Max Boland being from California, if you can ride hard pack, this is a track that suits you.
20:21 And the way this track is, it allows for guys to, as we're seeing Hunter Lawrence make another pass in the same spot, he's starting to cook it up.
20:29 >> Yes, so there it was. Yeah, he just stayed out of that roost zone, stayed far enough away from Boland about half a lap and then really put the attack on.
20:37 And that's the section he likes to make passes, we saw him do it earlier.
20:40 >> Yeah, well, what he's doing is, one, you don't want to be roosted, but instead of racing Max and having Max cut him off, which is going to slow him down, which he's going to end up losing that time to Justin Cooper,
20:50 they are starting to catch Hayden Deegan as we're watching him right now, like they're keeping that time.
20:54 So the only thing for Hunter and Justin, as I said, it is hard, you can override this track really easy.
21:01 So unlike last weekend where you can just go faster than the other guy just by being, just speed and charging, this track you can get in trouble.
21:08 So Hayden's in a good spot, this five-second lead is probably more like an eight to nine second at most tracks just because the way the condition is.
21:16 But if Hunter and, you know, Justin can team up and keep this pace, then they might go to close up on the rookie.
21:22 >> Six seconds now is the gap between your leader right here, Deegan, and Justin Cooper.
21:27 I would think he's a little more familiar with this track just being a California native to come up here for some big qualifying events to get into the Redlands, Amateur National, et cetera, et cetera.
21:37 The other tracks, a lot of times, it's the very first time he has seen them ever when he's racing them.
21:43 Oh, feet off the pegs, and he almost went down.
21:45 >> Yeah, you can see his rear tire start spinning up, and as we were watching Hunter Lawrence try to make passes on Levi Kitchen, we saw what happened to him when he gets close to those guys.
21:55 He would end up losing time.
21:56 So Hayden Deegan's coming up on these lap routers, so he can lose a lot of times depending on where he actually catches these guys, and I think that's what's happening right now.
22:04 So that four to six seconds, we just saw, I bet he lost like a second and a half just from that incident, and now it's down to three and a half right now.
22:11 >> Wow, so, yeah, nearly three seconds taken out of his lead in the last lap.
22:16 This is going to be a lot more difficult down the stretch.
22:19 We're talking about this Yamaha team with running one, two, and this new graphic combo they're running for their 50th anniversary.
22:27 You can learn a lot more about how this squad operates.
22:29 Take an inside look at this Monster Energy Yamaha star team.
22:32 Go to Yamaha Motor USA.
22:34 That's their YouTube channel, and check out Beyond the Gate.
22:38 A lot of great behind-the-scenes footage, and it shows what happens in the races, but more importantly, what happens in the truck and during the week when they ride at the goat farm.
22:47 They purchased Ricky Carmichael's old property, and that's where the team works, and they're running one, two right now.
22:51 So it does work.
22:52 They're putting the work there.
22:54 >> Hayden's feeling like Damon Bradshaw, and I bet if he goes on to win this motor, they might be keeping these graphics and gear set for a while.
23:00 >> Yeah, yeah.
23:01 Yeah, Damon Bradshaw, the legend of the 1990s, and it was cool.
23:04 He came over there to take pictures with Bradshaw next to this motorcycle yesterday.
23:09 He was pumped on the new look.
23:11 So here's Cooper.
23:12 Let's manage the gap.
23:13 There it is.
23:14 Wanted to see how far behind Hunter Lawrence was.
23:17 Can he get to Cooper here before it's over?
23:19 >> Hunter Lawrence almost lost the front end right behind Justin Cooper using the outside line.
23:23 Now you can see him starting to open these corners up, and that's going to help him, one, just keep his momentum up and not be so hard on the throttle.
23:30 But, yeah, it looked like for a few laps ago we saw Hunter kind of calm down and start riding this track, and even earlier from practice we heard his brother saying, no, I didn't go faster.
23:40 I actually slowed down, which allowed me to go faster, and that's kind of what it looks like what Hunter is doing, but he makes another mistake.
23:46 And that's why I said this track is very easy to override.
23:49 So the harder Hunter rides, the more he's going to lose time, actually.
23:53 >> And Deegan has opened it back up.
23:55 It was 3.4 seconds.
23:57 Now it's 4.5 between Deegan and Cooper, and Hunter starting to draw back to Cooper.
24:03 >> Yeah, I think a lot of that was when Hayden was just -- where he caught those lap riders at.
24:07 He's got a clear track, so maybe that gap is opening up.
24:10 But for Hayden it's going to be important to keep these guys in that four seconds for these next couple laps.
24:15 And I think at that point then Hunter is going to focus on just getting Justin Cooper.
24:19 But I don't know.
24:20 There's still -- Hayden's still right there, though, with these guys.
24:23 >> Yeah, 4.2.
24:24 So they're not eating him up.
24:26 It was 4.4.
24:27 Now it's 3.6.
24:28 So honestly, it was just like this the previous lap.
24:31 It must be this section of the track or the last time they hit a split where it works better for Cooper.
24:35 And then Deegan pulls back away on the other part of the track.
24:39 It will be interesting to see if Cooper can adjust to what Deegan is doing on one side or if Deegan can adjust on the other end.
24:48 >> NBC Sports Championship season, Moved by Pods continues.
24:52 The final round of the Open is tomorrow, 7 a.m. Eastern on NBC and Peacock.
24:59 Check that one out.
25:01 >> Oh, I know you will.
25:02 I know you're a golf guy.
25:03 This guy probably will as well.
25:04 Hunter Lawrence is a golf guy as well.
25:06 But right now he is focused on this, trying to catch Justin Cooper for second.
25:11 But like I said, probably watching the Open as well.
25:14 Here's what he said about it yesterday.
25:18 >> Can't say it looks fun to play from my perspective.
25:21 >> Man, brutal.
25:22 Just brutal.
25:23 It's awesome.
25:24 We've been getting some small updates today.
25:26 Yeah, when the boys are, you know, one under or even, you know, two under is a good round.
25:32 You know, it's -- geez, if I could break 100, I think I'd be happy, which I'd probably put up at 200.
25:38 You get stuck in a bunker or something like that.
25:40 It's just -- it doesn't look fun.
25:42 I enjoy watching the pros play it better than playing it myself.
25:47 >> That's the same thing here.
25:48 We talk about that roost and how much it hurts.
25:50 You can't really tell by watching him.
25:52 But when you're out there, he's taking dirt off the rear tire of Cooper.
25:55 >> I was just about to say that, Jason.
25:57 What he just said is exactly how I can explain this.
26:00 Looks beautiful, doesn't it?
26:02 >> It's fun.
26:03 >> Hunter Lawrence is going to be mad and welted up after this.
26:06 Just like those guys at the Open over there.
26:08 >> Yeah, looks great.
26:09 >> But they hit those balls backwards out of those bunkers.
26:12 It's tough for them.
26:13 But Hunter is doing a great job at, you know, keeping Justin Cooper close.
26:18 And they're still out there with Deegan.
26:21 And I think the main thing for Hayden is trying to finish this thing off.
26:27 He has an opportunity, even if Hunter gets around Justin Cooper, he has an opportunity to make a dent more.
26:34 The points are the one thing.
26:35 But what it says about the last couple weeks, Jason, I feel like he has a -- he can send a big message.
26:40 And I'm going to send that letter to Hunter, that message he sent last weekend, he's going to send it back post-noted to him.
26:45 >> Well, this is big, too, with Cooper, who certainly has eyes on this title as well.
26:50 There's no way he wants Lawrence to get around him.
26:53 But the KTM keys to the moto, that really probably is the biggest story.
26:56 Can Deegan finish the job?
26:57 Oh, here's Hunter.
26:59 He's got the inside.
27:00 He takes the line of the spot away from Cooper.
27:02 >> Cooper got caught sleeping right there.
27:04 And Hunter has been working that outside line.
27:06 And unlike what he was doing to the other guys, he would use that line to catch those guys to open up and try to make that pass there.
27:13 But Justin Cooper got caught sleeping.
27:15 He didn't think, since it is a one-line section, he didn't think Hunter was going to come blowing past him on that outside.
27:21 Hunter did a great job at surprising him.
27:23 >> Wow.
27:24 So that's a big change for Hunter Lawrence to catch Justin Cooper and then make that pass.
27:29 Now dealing with a ton of lap traffic.
27:32 Got Slade Smith on the 337.
27:34 The Rocky Mountain ATV MCKTM, Hunter finally clears him.
27:38 So those are KTM keys to the moto right there.
27:41 And Hunter -- sorry, can Deegan finish the job now with Hunter up to second?
27:45 Going to be quite a stretch run.
27:47 >> Yeah, it's going to be critical.
27:49 If Hayden can keep that gap, like I said, and depending on where he catches those lappers, and that's the tough part about watch Hugo.
27:54 Like, Hayden can ride the same lap times and ride really good and catch those lap riders in that same spot as Hunter.
27:59 If he allows Hunter to get within a couple seconds and see him, then Hunter, I feel like, has the best chance.
28:05 You can just make that time up because you can see him.
28:08 But Hayden did a good job at clearing those lappers.
28:10 We'll see.
28:11 There's about three laps left on Jason.
28:13 It's going to be on the next lap if Hunter has anything for him.
28:16 >> Hey, it's good to see.
28:17 That's actually Austin Fortner who they're coming around the lap.
28:20 We saw Fortner down in the first turn.
28:22 So good to know that he was healthy enough to get back on the bike and finish this moto.
28:25 Even if he is a lap down, he's in 21st place.
28:28 Hunter going to work.
28:29 More traffic.
28:30 That's Fortner up ahead.
28:31 Still can't quite see Deegan.
28:33 >> You know, Mitch Payton, if you ain't broken, don't ride back to this pit.
28:36 Don't ride.
28:37 If the motorcycle is working, you better get out there and ride.
28:40 Honestly, I know it's tough for Austin.
28:42 This is actually good for him.
28:43 The kid needs to be out here riding.
28:45 We were talking earlier about the playoffs.
28:47 I think he just needs to -- Austin is one of those guys that just like Hayden Deegan was one of those talents.
28:52 It's good to see him out here.
28:53 Glad to see him, you know, not --
28:55 >> Yeah, wow, the jersey is torn up from that crash earlier as well.
28:59 >> Usually when you go down in front of like 39 other motorcycles off the start, something probably is going to get torn.
29:05 At least the jersey is the only thing torn.
29:07 We can replace that.
29:08 >> Yeah, he'll be okay from 1 to 2.
29:10 4.7 seconds to gap.
29:12 So Lawrence not really making up ground on Deegan.
29:15 The rookie has come back with a vengeance today after 5.8 moto scores last week in Minnesota.
29:22 >> Yeah, one thing with Hunter, like he might be able to close up, but passing as we've seen is difficult.
29:27 So even if he closes that gap, Hayden still has just as good a chance of holding him off because of the track scenario.
29:33 But Hunter is doing what he's been doing all year long.
29:36 I feel like his riding has been really aggressive like he was last weekend.
29:40 But he's managing the race.
29:42 And we always second motocross.
29:44 Second as good as the first as first moto.
29:46 So Hunter has done a great job.
29:48 And he's passed the most of his other competition besides the rookie.
29:52 >> Yeah, it's still an impressive comeback charge on a track that doesn't lend itself to that.
29:57 Hempshire has moved up to fourth ahead of bowling.
30:00 Sixth, hand maker seventh, kitchen, Mumford, and Jalik Swole round out the top ten.
30:06 Then it's Hawkins, Pierce-Brown, Schwartz, Kilroy, and Roswell.
30:12 That is your top 15.
30:14 And time about to expire.
30:17 So we're looking at two and a half laps to go.
30:20 >> Now I wanted you to pay attention.
30:22 You saw how Austin Fortner went to the outside.
30:24 But before that, Hunter Lawrence, Austin has been in front of him providing almost a full lap.
30:30 But Hunter Lawrence wasn't even close enough to be able to pass him.
30:32 And that's what I mean about the way this track is.
30:35 Like, guys, the time, how hard it is to make up time, it's really difficult.
30:40 So is Austin riding as good as Hayden Deegan or top three?
30:43 Well, maybe.
30:44 But also this track, it makes it hard for these guys to make that time up as you saw.
30:49 So I just wanted to point that out.
30:50 J.T., what do you got for us?
30:52 >> Just seeing a yo-yo effect on different sections of the track.
30:55 Every time they go into the section right after the finish line, Hayden Deegan starts to pull the gap out.
30:59 He pushes it to four or five seconds.
31:01 And then Hunter finds some time somewhere else on the other side of the racetrack to pull it down into three.
31:06 So it's just this yo-yo effect that's going on.
31:08 And we'll see if Hunter or Hayden can find ways to clean it up a little bit.
31:11 >> Yeah, but time's running out.
31:13 Next time Deegan hits the finish line with the clock expired, he'll get the two laps to go board.
31:18 >> Yeah, I think to J.T., what Hunter's got a really good line.
31:21 When we saw him pass Justin Cooper, I think he's one of the only guys that's going to that outside.
31:26 I saw Hayden dipping down to the inside as we're seeing right here.
31:29 Hunter's railing that outside, which is quite a bit quicker.
31:33 And Hayden also might be just being more patient in this section.
31:37 As I said, it was slippery compared to Hunter.
31:39 Hunter's trying to catch him.
31:41 But at the end of the day, Hayden knows if he can keep it within three seconds over Hunter, he's fine.
31:47 He just doesn't need to allow him to build a blitz on him.
31:50 And I think Hunter at this point, unless Hayden makes a mistake, Hunter's going to probably settle for a second and just try to attack him that second moto.
31:56 >> Yeah, Hunter has been the master of that, managing the first motos.
31:59 Again, 3.3.2.3 were his first moto scores in the first four races of the year.
32:04 And he ended up winning all four of those overall.
32:08 But this might be a little bit different.
32:10 Danger Boy Hayden Deegan today.
32:12 Clearly he is fired up and not giving up on this title, even though he lost the red plate last week.
32:18 That or he just likes his track better.
32:20 It's really hard to say which tracks are going to click for him.
32:23 He's still new at this game as a rookie.
32:25 >> Yeah, I just feel like Hayden, the start helped him.
32:28 And just his attitude, even last weekend, that first moto, I've seen guys come out here and usually if they're up front and their main competition passes them and then another guy passes them, they usually finish off way farther back.
32:41 But Hayden was still able to mentally salvage what he had.
32:44 He got fifth that first moto.
32:46 So that guy is the same guy as this one.
32:48 That attitude of like, you know what, I lost that red plate, but I'm still in this fight, it's the same reason why when guys pass him, instead of just letting it go, letting the road go, Hayden fights on and he keeps going.
32:59 But he almost went off the racetrack going down that hill right now.
33:02 Good save.
33:03 >> Fifth and moto won last week.
33:04 I heard you say on your podcast, Bubba's world, fifth is not great, but it looked like it was going to trend much worse and he was able to minimize the damage.
33:12 >> Yeah, Hayden's been doing a really good job.
33:14 And that's why we've been impressed with his rookie.
33:16 There's been only one or two races that we're like, man, he's kind of running like a rookie.
33:20 But what Hayden, what he did, I mean, he came in with the points lead.
33:24 Hunter Lawrence has been off.
33:26 So he had that red plate.
33:27 So he's thinking that I'm the guy.
33:29 Hunter Lawrence goes past him.
33:30 His teammate goes past him.
33:32 So it's hard for a rookie, you know, any of these guys, but not only that, a rookie, to just be like, man, this ain't going through.
33:39 So mentally it's hard as a rider.
33:41 I've been in that position.
33:42 But Hayden was able to fight.
33:44 And that fifth place is why he's only 13 points.
33:46 That fifth place is why he's winning this race.
33:48 And that's why he's a big championship threat to Hunter Lawrence because he's able to keep fighting.
33:53 >> Yeah, there really isn't much secret sauce to what Hayden Deegan does.
33:57 He rides hard.
33:58 He is just a competitive racer's racer.
34:01 >> Watching the battle box.
34:03 That is for fifth and sixth.
34:07 Two-lap car should turn into a white flag.
34:09 There it is for Hayden Deegan looking for his second career Moto win.
34:14 It was big when he got the one earlier in the year.
34:17 But I honestly feel like because of where this championship is, this one might be bigger.
34:21 I know the career first is a big deal.
34:23 But to answer back in this series, it's going to be massive.
34:26 >> Yeah, this is going to be really, really big.
34:29 He beat Justin Cooper, his teammate, to get that first victory.
34:32 But I think the way he's able to do this, especially what we just saw after Southwick.
34:37 And I know some people probably started writing him off.
34:40 Or he had to off basically four Motos of not Hayden Deegan-ish.
34:44 But to be able to come back here and basically beat everyone straight up is going to bode well for him as far as the championship.
34:51 But also just keep him in this fight focus.
34:54 But we saw that shot of Joe Shimoda.
34:57 I feel like, Jason, that's been his problem all year.
34:59 The races that he's done good is he started up front.
35:02 We saw at Southwick he was up front.
35:03 He got the whole shot.
35:04 And then he was able to hold on or he was up in the top three last weekend.
35:08 The same thing.
35:09 But when he has to make his passes, Hunter Lawrence is able to do that.
35:12 Some of these other guys are able to do it.
35:14 Joe gets stuck behind him.
35:15 And as a guy in the championship threat, that's what's going to make it difficult for him.
35:19 But back to Hayden Deegan, you can't say enough for him.
35:21 The bounce back after these last four Motos says a lot.
35:24 And we'll see if he continues for the rest of the day.
35:26 But it's good for us fans.
35:28 >> The fans love it.
35:29 You can hear them.
35:30 You can see them on the fence line.
35:31 Nobody, and I mean no one, not even a 450 riders have autograph lines like him.
35:36 I was over at that team, Monster Energy, Yamaha, star racing earlier.
35:40 It is just a wall of people where the autograph sessions are set to begin.
35:44 Because Deegan is already so popular from his YouTube channel with about a million and a half subscribers.
35:50 His social media.
35:52 And of course the Deegan family name with Brian being a decorated athlete great in this series back when he raced it.
35:57 And the next game is gold medalist on and on.
36:00 So the fans, this is what they want to see.
36:02 They come to watch Hayden Deegan.
36:03 They like it even more when he wins.
36:05 Hunter is putting in a flurry here down the stretch, though.
36:07 >> Yeah, he's just putting in.
36:08 He knows he's not going to catch him.
36:10 Hopefully maybe he can push Hayden.
36:12 Maybe he makes a mistake in his tough part.
36:14 Because here at Washoe you can make a mistake really easy.
36:17 But what he's also doing is not allowing Hayden to start recovering.
36:20 Usually when guys got that lead, Hunter gives up and just rolls his thing.
36:24 He can start recovering, getting ready for the second motor.
36:26 So push the guy.
36:27 But Jason, here he is.
36:29 >> There it is.
36:30 Big first motor win for Hayden Deegan.
36:32 Huge in the championship.
36:34 Gained three points on Hunter Lawrence.
36:36 But that's not the real point.
36:37 After being off the podium four motors in a row, Deegan is showing he's not giving up on the quest for a title this year.
36:44 It will be Cooper in third.
36:46 You just saw Hampshire come across in fourth.
36:48 Bowen holds off Shimoda for sixth.
36:50 So over all these riders, we had Hampshire, Shimoda, Cooper, Deegan, who can answer back and get some ground back on Hunter Lawrence today?
37:00 Hayden Deegan is the one to answer the bell.
37:02 >> Return to sender.
37:04 >> Oh, okay.
37:08 Oh, he finally made a mistake after the checker.
37:11 >> Stay focused, son.
37:12 That's why I shoot before you.
37:14 Only mistake he made that whole motor.
37:16 >> And he throws the goggles off to the fans, and they are loving it here.
37:20 Everywhere we go, there's a Hayden Deegan crowd.
37:23 There is Cooper.
37:24 And it is a long run.
37:26 You don't often see what's kind of a big --
