01:26 - That gets 10 gold blooms out of a possible 10 gold blooms.
01:29 It's my highest rating.
01:30 (airplane engine roaring)
01:36 - On October 27th, 1904, at 2.35 p.m. precisely,
01:48 in a gleaming new subway station,
01:51 30 feet below city hall, Mayor George B. McClellan,
01:55 son of the famous Civil War General,
01:57 officially opened the first subway in New York,
02:00 recklessly throttling the first train up to full speed
02:04 and racing uptown underground,
02:06 towards a sleepy district four miles to the north,
02:09 where the New York Times was just completing
02:12 its brand new 22-story headquarters
02:15 at the foot of an hourglass-shaped crossroads,
02:17 the city to be renamed Times Square in the paper's honor.
02:22 The most famous, vibrant, and thrilling urban district
02:25 on earth, lured into life,
02:28 the culmination of the most explosive century
02:30 of growth and change in the city's history,
02:32 as the center of New York surged up the island of Manhattan,
02:36 following the path of a Native American trail
02:40 that the Dutch settlers had called Breedway, or Broadway,
02:44 from the stock markets of Wall Street
02:47 to the raucous newspapers across from city hall,
02:50 up to the giant apartment stores on Madison Square,
02:54 where by 1876, passersby stared up in wonder
02:59 at the giant arm of an unfinished Statue of Liberty,
03:02 still looking for funds and something to stand on.
03:05 But it was in the next three decades
03:08 that New York City would finish coming into its own
03:11 on a spectacular scale,
03:13 as millions upon millions of immigrants
03:15 poured through the heart and onto the streets
03:18 of a city that by 1882 had become the first on earth
03:21 to be lit by electricity.
03:23 And that as the clock struck midnight
03:26 on December 31st, 1898,
03:29 dramatically expanded its borders literally overnight
03:32 to encompass a vast five-part metropolis,
03:35 connected to itself by 1904
03:38 by what would become the largest subway system in the world.
03:42 On New Year's Eve that same year,
03:44 confirming its status as the new throbbing heart
03:47 of the greatest city in America,
03:49 immense crowds gathered in Times Square for the first time
03:53 for a publicity stunt dreamed up
03:55 by the publishers of the New York Times,
03:58 counting down the seconds to the stroke of midnight.
04:01 From then on, New Yorkers,
04:03 and soon much of the rest of the world,
04:06 would ring in the new year
04:07 with a delirious celebration in Times Square.
04:10 And it was only the beginning.
04:14 In the years to come,
04:15 the astonishing mix of creative energies in New York,
04:18 black and white, immigrant and native born,
04:22 Jewish, Italian, Irish, African-American, and Anglo-Saxon,
04:27 would burst into glorious expression
04:30 as a new and distinctively American kind of culture,
04:33 brash and vital, electric and pulsing,
04:37 now began to come into its own.
04:39 - I found the next bus to cross Times Square.
04:42 I'm saying hello to Broadway.
04:45 - Just as New York City itself
04:47 was lifting straight up into the skies,
04:49 becoming the world headquarters
04:51 of a new kind of modern mass culture,
04:53 consecrated to everything air-minded and upwardly mobile,
04:57 air travel, skyscrapers, motion pictures,
05:00 the media, high fashion, and for long radio,
05:05 a thrilling city of spectacle, fantasy, movement, and dreams
05:10 whose very heart and soul was based in Times Square.
05:13 (upbeat music)
05:15 By 1929, no fewer than 66 Broadway theaters,
05:20 along with hundreds of nightclubs, vaudeville houses,
05:23 and movie palaces,
05:25 were drawing in a quarter of a million people
05:27 each and every night,
05:28 to a district now bathed in the glow
05:30 of a million incandescent lights,
05:32 and known around the world as the Great White Way,
05:36 now the greatest incubator of talent in human history,
05:39 and the birthplace of one of America's
05:41 greatest contributions to world culture,
05:44 the Broadway musical.
05:45 - I'm sure you're going on a youngster,
05:48 but you're about to come back a star.
05:50 - By 1940, Times Square had become
05:55 the first place in the world
05:56 where people gathered to get news in real time,
05:59 as it was happening on the never-ending electric zipper
06:03 that coursed around the Times Tower.
06:05 On August 14th, 1945,
06:09 more than two million people gathered in Times Square
06:11 to learn that six long years of World War
06:14 had finally come to an end.
06:15 Ushering in an era of American pre-eminence
06:22 as never before,
06:23 making New York and Times Square itself
06:26 the crossroads of the world,
06:28 as one great musical after another
06:30 filled the stages of Broadway,
06:32 and captured the hearts of millions.
06:34 (upbeat music)
06:39 - They can't be trotting down to Times Square
06:41 to pick up a merchandise.
06:43 (train horn blaring)
06:45 - I'm walking here!
06:46 I'm walking here!
06:48 - But by the late 1960s,
06:50 New York and cities everywhere
06:52 had entered a dark period of decay and decline.
06:55 As the automobile drew people out of the city
06:59 to the suburbs,
07:01 and as a new medium, television,
07:03 brought the once public world of entertainment
07:05 into private living rooms everywhere,
07:08 until by 1975,
07:10 the city and its famous crossroads
07:12 seemed on the verge of total collapse.
07:15 But the city didn't collapse,
07:18 and on the contrary came roaring back,
07:20 thanks in large part to the astonishing tide of newcomers
07:25 when the final decades of the 20th century
07:27 surged into the city from around the world,
07:30 drawn by the beacon of opportunity
07:32 that New York still stood for.
07:34 By the 1990s,
07:37 as crime rates plummeted and the city rose again,
07:40 the old theaters on 42nd Street
07:42 were refurbished and restored,
07:44 and new ones sprang up,
07:46 and Broadway itself came roaring back
07:48 to the city and to peoples around the world
07:54 at times of greatest challenge.
07:56 Today, Times Square,
08:00 sometimes dismissed by New Yorkers themselves
08:03 as too full of tourists,
08:05 is fulfilling its promise as the crossroads of the world
08:08 as never before.
08:09 Place at once of destination and homecoming
08:14 for the entire planet.
08:16 Still the beating heart
08:18 of one of the most thrilling cities on Earth,
08:20 a city of yearning and aspiration and dreams,
08:25 New York.
08:27 - We love you, New York!
08:29 (upbeat music)
08:31 - [Announcer] Welcome to Times Square.
08:39 Stand clear of the opening doors, please.
08:51 Next stop, Monterey.
08:58 (train rumbling)
09:01 (upbeat music)
09:07 - 'Sup, my dudes, it's Demi,
09:13 and today I am taking you to Rise, New York.
09:16 This is not only a museum all about New York City,
09:19 it's also a ride.
09:21 It's a ride just like Soarin' over at Epcot,
09:24 and if you watch this channel,
09:25 you know that is my favorite attraction at Epcot,
09:27 so of course I had to come check this place out.
09:29 We're gonna go see all of the different parts of the museum,
09:32 ride the ride,
09:33 and hopefully have a great day here at Rise, New York.
09:36 So let's get in there, let's go have some fun,
09:37 and let's go get into some hygiene.
09:39 So after you check in, you're gonna head to the second floor
09:42 and there is an elevator, so it is accessible.
09:44 On the second floor, they do have a place to hang coats,
09:47 which is great, and that's totally complimentary.
09:49 There is a restroom up here.
09:50 And the first part of our experience
09:53 is a little documentary.
09:55 It's an eight-minute documentary
09:56 narrated by, excuse me, I'm so excited,
09:59 my favorite, Jeff Goldblum,
10:01 and it's about the history of Times Square,
10:04 and it's super immersive as well, this film.
10:07 So we just have to wait until the next film starts.
10:10 (birds chirping)
10:13 (birds chirping)
10:15 (birds chirping)
10:45 So this is the first room after you get off of the train,
10:48 and everyone's scooted out of here,
10:49 and don't, because there's a really cool thing in here.
10:52 But before I talk about the really cool thing,
10:54 I wanna show you throughout the museum,
10:56 there's gonna be these QR codes,
10:58 and it's gonna give you additional information,
11:00 so if you see one, scan it.
11:01 You're gonna wanna, like,
11:02 it's gonna give you maybe an audio thing
11:04 or extra information.
11:05 It's gonna be totally to your benefit if you're coming here.
11:08 But the really cool thing in here,
11:10 well, one of the really cool things in here is,
11:11 this is Alexander Hamilton.
11:14 And this is an actual check written by Alexander Hamilton.
11:19 And when I mean an actual check,
11:20 like an actual check, not a replica.
11:23 I think that's super cool.
11:24 My history buffs, my Hamilton fans, that's awesome.
11:28 The other really cool thing in here
11:30 is this replica of the New York Stock Exchange bell,
11:33 which, you know, they ring every day.
11:35 And you can do it while you're here.
11:37 (bells ringing)
11:39 Your dream of ringing the Stock Exchange bell
11:41 can come true at Rise New York.
11:43 (orchestral music)
11:46 (orchestral music)
12:13 (orchestral music)
12:15 (orchestral music)
12:18 (orchestral music)
12:21 (people chattering)
12:24 (people chattering)
12:27 (people chattering)
12:30 (people chattering)
13:00 Now we're gonna head into the next room,
13:01 which is the Skyline Room.
13:03 And here it has a Tipping Point Elevator Break model,
13:05 which was like the first model elevator,
13:09 which helped get people up to building the skyscrapers,
13:13 which is really cool.
13:14 Plus it has models of some famous skyscrapers in New York.
13:19 We have the Flatiron Building, the Woolworth Building,
13:23 the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower.
13:27 We have the Chrysler Building.
13:30 Heading into TV and Radio, oh my gosh.
13:33 It's a Tesla coil.
13:37 (people chattering)
13:41 (people chattering)
13:48 (people chattering)
13:51 (people chattering)
13:59 (people chattering)
14:06 (people chattering)
14:13 (people chattering)
14:16 (people chattering)
14:23 (people chattering)
14:28 (people chattering)
14:42 (people chattering)
14:45 Here we have a display of different types of radios.
14:56 They have a key here to tell you which is which.
15:00 This is really cool.
15:01 And like over here in the corner
15:02 is like almost like a little radio studio on air,
15:05 light is on.
15:06 It even has a music stand with a chair,
15:10 with a script that you can even do some radio recording.
15:15 Oh my gosh, it has Orson Welles, "War of the Worlds."
15:17 This is incredibly wild and incredibly personal,
15:20 but the Giants win the pennant.
15:22 Transcript is here and so is the picture
15:24 of when Bobby Thompson hit the home run
15:27 and beat the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951.
15:30 My grandpa is a huge part of that game and that history
15:34 and has been in books and in documentaries.
15:36 So I actually got like really emotional all of a sudden.
15:40 This, actually they're playing it right now.
15:42 (crowd cheering)
15:43 - Bobby Thompson in a wide drive
15:46 into the lower deck of the left field stand.
15:49 And the game makes it so amazing.
15:52 The Giants, home run on the center liner.
15:55 - Well, that was such a treat for me.
15:57 The Dodgers is such a big part of my life.
16:00 Anyway, so let's keep going.
16:01 We have a radio hall of fame and then.
16:04 - By A.T. West.
16:05 (people cheering)
16:07 (radio playing)
16:10 - Reports of serving several explosions
16:14 of incandescent gas occurring at regular intervals
16:17 on the planet Mars.
16:19 The spectroscope indicates the gas to be hydrogen
16:21 and moving.
16:22 Playing for you in the meridian room of the.
16:24 (people talking)
16:27 (soft music)
16:33 (people cheering)
16:35 - It is time to head into something
16:41 I am super excited about.
16:43 Television studio W45.
16:46 Because for some people this just might be
16:50 a black and white studio.
16:52 But this is not just any black and white studio.
16:54 It's a studio replica of the Honeymooners.
16:59 Which is one of my favorite shows of all time.
17:02 This is so wild to me.
17:03 This is such an amazing replica.
17:05 And what's so funny is I was actually just like
17:08 listening to an episode of Conan's podcast
17:10 and we were talking about how like at this point in life
17:15 like they had an icebox, this is an icebox.
17:18 But let me see if it's open, no I can't open it.
17:20 Ralph and Alice, they just really didn't have a lot
17:25 at this point in life.
17:26 People had refrigerators but they didn't.
17:28 Like they were just, they didn't have like a lot.
17:31 They didn't have a phone, they didn't have a TV
17:33 except for one episode and that didn't go well.
17:35 They didn't have a refrigerator.
17:37 They had this room, a bedroom, this table.
17:41 And that was it.
17:42 Ralph was a bus driver.
17:43 It was such a wild show.
17:47 So funny.
17:49 I mean an amazing photo op.
17:51 An amazing history.
17:53 Like such an iconic show.
17:56 Incredible talent of like cast of characters.
18:01 I mean, if you've never seen The Honeymooners,
18:05 please, please go watch it.
18:07 I know at least they play it every New Year's on the CW
18:12 or maybe it's just PIX11 in New York.
18:14 I think it's just PIX11 in New York unfortunately
18:15 but please go seek it out.
18:16 It's one of the most iconic shows of all time
18:20 and you know, it's just so wonderful
18:24 and this is an amazing photo op.
18:26 (upbeat music)
18:30 (upbeat music)
18:33 (upbeat music)
18:35 (upbeat music)
18:38 (upbeat music)
18:40 (upbeat music)
18:43 (upbeat music)
18:49 (upbeat music)
18:56 (upbeat music)
19:02 (upbeat music)
19:06 (upbeat music)
19:09 (upbeat music)
19:30 (upbeat music)
19:32 I had way too much fun in that room.
19:52 I spent so much time in there
19:53 but now it's time to head into fashion.
19:57 New York City fashion
19:58 and I mean, I clearly know nothing
20:00 'cause I literally thought that was Elphaba's dress
20:02 and it is not.
20:03 This room specifically,
20:06 you're gonna just go to the walls
20:07 and scan the QR codes and read the walls
20:09 and then maybe even come over here
20:11 and look at the little film that they have.
20:13 I saw like Christian Siriano.
20:15 If you're into fashion,
20:16 you're definitely gonna enjoy this room a lot.
20:18 (upbeat music)
20:26 (upbeat music)
20:29 (upbeat music)
20:37 (upbeat music)
20:50 (upbeat music)
20:52 (upbeat music)
21:14 (upbeat music)
21:17 (upbeat music)
21:23 (upbeat music)
21:27 (upbeat music)
21:42 (upbeat music)
21:44 (upbeat music)
22:04 (upbeat music)
22:07 - I could have been Denver.
22:15 I could have been somebody.
22:18 I'm Gatsby.
22:20 (upbeat music)
22:25 (upbeat music)
22:29 (upbeat music)
22:32 - Time to head into music.
22:46 So this is really cool.
22:47 This is an actual drum head
22:49 that was actually used by the Beatles
22:52 and it's in this display.
22:52 I think that's really, really cool.
22:54 So as you can tell,
22:55 there's not many people here today.
22:56 For reference, this is a Wednesday afternoon.
22:59 So I guess if you're coming midweek,
23:00 it's gonna be your best bet.
23:02 Probably weekends are gonna be way busier.
23:04 And look, here's a display of the Village People.
23:07 A beautiful display of the notorious B.I.G.,
23:10 an incredible New York icon.
23:12 And even Cardi B gets a shout out here,
23:15 who I went to college with at the same time,
23:17 but I didn't know her.
23:18 But we did go to the same college at the same time.
23:20 And that's one of her body suits.
23:22 (upbeat music)
23:24 (upbeat music)
23:27 But look who's here.
23:47 It's our friend Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street.
23:51 He looks really happy considering it's Oscar the Grouch.
23:54 (laughs)
23:56 After Oscar, you guys, it's the Friends Couch.
24:01 Okay.
24:02 I know most of you know this.
24:04 (laughs)
24:05 It's very, very cool.
24:07 It's such a great photo op.
24:09 And then after the Friends Couch
24:11 is a little display of Carrie Bradshaw's
24:13 iconic intro outfit with the tutu.
24:16 Is anybody else love, hate, watching, and just like that?
24:20 (laughs)
24:21 It's my favorite thing and my least favorite thing
24:24 in the entire world.
24:25 And then finally in this room,
24:27 an amazing photo op of a late night set
24:31 because New York is where it all started
24:34 with the Steve Allen show, later the Tonight Show.
24:38 This is great.
24:39 You can be the host, you can be the guest.
24:41 What a great.
24:41 Made it to the movies.
24:44 It looks like they're just playing clips from movies
24:46 that take place in New York,
24:47 Zooland or Ghostbusters, Elf.
24:49 But you know, take a second.
24:51 There's some benches here.
24:54 There's some popcorn that is not for eating, unfortunately.
24:58 And then over here, there's a kinetoscope
25:01 and you can look through here
25:03 and you can see a movie through here.
25:05 - Imagine a country so free,
25:07 one can't throw glass on the streets.
25:09 (upbeat music)
25:20 (man yelling)
25:23 (upbeat music)
25:27 (upbeat music)
25:30 (upbeat music)
25:32 (upbeat music)
25:35 - Are you okay?
25:37 Are you hurt?
25:39 (upbeat music)
25:42 - Remember, it's great power,
26:00 but there's great responsibility.
26:04 (upbeat music)
26:06 the movie.
26:07 (upbeat music)
26:10 (upbeat music)
26:12 (upbeat music)
26:15 (upbeat music)
26:17 (upbeat music)
26:20 (upbeat music)
26:23 (man yelling)
26:31 - You turn it on.
26:38 Get started.
26:39 What's wrong with you?
26:42 Huh?
26:44 You gonna shoot me?
26:45 What happened, buddy?
26:46 - You're funny now, you're funny like a clown.
26:48 - Are you for real?
26:49 You're not talking to me?
26:51 - You're a funny guy.
26:52 (audience laughing)
26:55 - May the Christian Lord guide my hand
27:00 against your Roman poverty.
27:02 - Prepare to receive the two lords.
27:04 (audience laughing)
27:07 (upbeat music)
27:10 - Love you.
27:16 - Yes, I love you.
27:19 (upbeat music)
27:21 (audience chattering)
27:29 - You know, you don't get anywhere.
27:39 That's probably why you're waiting for me
27:40 to come to you.
27:42 - Sam, your life is very personal.
27:48 - It's not personal.
27:50 It's strictly business.
27:52 - Very exciting, do not miss the stage door to Broadway.
28:05 We have the costume from Follies,
28:07 we have the Phantom in his masquerade costume,
28:10 we have Mufasa, we have Hamilton, Alexander Hamilton,
28:14 we have the Genie, and we have Roxy Hart from Chicago.
28:18 Broadway rooms are always gonna be my favorite room
28:23 because I work in theater.
28:25 (upbeat music)
28:28 (singing)
28:30, and nobody in all of us, no wizard that there is,
28:37 or was, is ever gonna bring me down.
28:40 (singing)
28:42 (singing)
28:44 (singing)
28:46 (cheering)
28:50 (singing)
28:52 (singing)
