00:00 They've got Taylor Swift playing here, okay guys?
00:01 You don't understand.
00:03 This is everything to me.
00:05 Canadian women, female athletes, Taylor Swift.
00:09 Really, what more could you ask for?
00:11 - This is SportsCenter.
00:13 - Hey, I'm Marissa Rivera and we are less than 12 hours
00:15 away from the kickoff of the FIFA Women's World Cup
00:18 and I'm here at the Canadian Women's Practice right now.
00:20 The jet lag hasn't hit me yet,
00:22 so I'm gonna ride the wave, baby.
00:23 Yesterday we talked about Canada's underdog status
00:25 with our analyst, Karm.
00:26 Today we're gonna go even deeper.
00:28 Welcome back, Karm, let's start with the defending champs
00:30 from south of the border.
00:31 At plus 240, they have the shortest odds.
00:33 If everything goes right,
00:34 are they hoisting a third straight World Cup?
00:36 - I hate to say it, the answer is yes.
00:38 I think for the sport as a whole
00:39 and to kind of prove that this development
00:41 is across the world, is happening at an exponential rate.
00:44 I'd love to see another champion,
00:45 but a three-peat, a historical three-peat
00:47 is absolutely possible for this star-studded US team.
00:51 They've lost a few vets along the way,
00:53 in Carly Lloyd, for example, most notably,
00:55 but have replaced, absolutely replaced her
00:57 with Trinity Rodman, Ashley Sanchez, Alyssa Thompson,
01:00 some really big stars
01:02 that will likely have a breakout tournament.
01:04 So, you know, this US team has a culture of winning.
01:07 I'm not gonna say never say dies.
01:09 Those are the Aussies' motto this tournament,
01:11 but they have a way about them
01:13 that's gonna negate any debutantes.
01:15 You know, there's a lot of doubt
01:16 about the youth of this team,
01:17 but I think they're gonna pick up where they left off.
01:19 And if they get on their feet and have the performances
01:23 we all know they can have, even with some, you know,
01:26 questionable results leading into this tournament,
01:28 I think the US can do this again.
01:30 - Outside of the rival Americans,
01:32 give us a couple of teams
01:33 that you think could win this whole thing.
01:34 - I'm very excited by Brazil.
01:36 I don't know about winning the whole thing,
01:38 but I think they have some top players in Caroline,
01:41 North Carolina, doing exceptionally well.
01:44 You have Dabinia killing the NWSL right now, and Marta.
01:48 I mean, that team has everything to play for
01:50 in a veteran of her stature.
01:52 You also have Germany showing extremely well in the Euros.
01:55 I would have said England a little bit ago,
01:58 but with some injury concerns, I wouldn't put them up there.
02:01 The USA, as we just said, and you know,
02:03 let's throw Canada in there.
02:04 Let's hope they go on a run.
02:05 - Carm Cugina, thank you so much for joining us.
02:08 - Thank you very much.
02:10 - Canada's tournament opener in Australia is almost upon us,
02:12 but before you get ready to belt out,
02:14 oh Canada, at the bar or in your living room,
02:16 be aware that your voice might be judged.
02:18 As one member of Team Canada unfortunately found out.
02:21 - Teammate who loves karaoke, but never should.
02:26 Oh no.
02:29 Like I have an answer in my mind,
02:30 but I just wanna see my options.
02:33 Yeah, I just don't even.
02:34 Vanessa, Vanessa, Vanessa.
02:37 - Is it mean to just put Vanessa because it's true?
02:41 - I'm gonna put Vanessa.
02:43 Vanessa.
02:44 I'm gonna go with Vanessa on this one, sorry V.
02:47 - Yeah, she's not gonna be happy with this one.
02:50 - Have I been called out for this?
02:51 Okay, we'll go with someone new.
02:53 I don't see Ev being very good at karaoke,
02:55 but she doesn't love doing it.
02:56 No, it's Vanessa, she's not.
02:58 No.
03:01 - I'm gonna say Jules.
03:03 - But it's like.
03:04 - Oh, Vanessa.
03:08 - Vanessa is the worst.
03:09 I bet you other people have said her as well.
03:12 - We have an acapella group,
03:14 and they have said that everybody is welcome
03:16 in this acapella group.
03:17 - She is a part of our acapella group.
03:19 - Yeah, because she's really wanted
03:21 to be a part of the acapella group, but like.
03:23 - You can't really disallow anyone to join.
03:25 - The acapella group is full
03:27 of extremely talented individuals.
03:29 - She's in the acapella group, but she plays the tambourine.
03:32 - I'm actually hurt by this.
03:34 - Love you, Vanessa, but it's you.
03:36 - She's dead to me.
03:38 - Like A for effort, but you know.
03:40 - Ashley's dead to me.
03:41 - Not the best voice.
03:42 - Dree's dead to me.
03:43 - Stick to Mario Kart.
03:44 - Kaelin is definitely dead to me.
03:46 This pile is dead to me.
03:47 Not even angry at this point,
03:49 I'm just disappointed, whatever.
03:51 - Now I don't want to be biased on anything,
03:52 but I think that might have been the best called out
03:55 TSN has ever done.
03:56 Hmm?
03:57 Yeah.
03:59 Be sure to catch Canada's opening match against Nigeria
04:01 tomorrow night at 10 30 Eastern, 7 30 Pacific,
04:03 complete with a 90 minute pregame show on TSN.
04:06 And just like yesterday's show, I'm signing off.
04:08 Luca's taking over for just a moment.
04:10 I'll see you back here at the end of the show
04:11 for a little Roberto on the go.
04:13 Take it away, Luca.
04:14 - Thanks, Marissa.
04:14 I'm glad I didn't get called out like Eric did yesterday.
04:17 And why would you call me out?
04:19 All right, it's time for Marissa's,
04:21 mine and your favorite segment,
04:22 why we love sports today.
04:24 - Why we love sports today.
04:27 - All right, if you're an avid TikTok peruser,
04:29 then you've probably seen the popular,
04:31 what do you do for a living videos from Ted Czar.
04:34 Featuring anyone from regular people to Adam Sandler,
04:37 Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato.
04:40 And Ted also asks the question to NBA players.
04:42 And his latest run in with Duncan Robinson was amazing.
04:46 - Yo, my man, what do you do for a living?
04:49 - Accounting.
04:50 - You're an accountant?
04:51 Like Kelly Olenek, he's an accountant too.
04:54 Yeah, he said in that video.
04:56 I wonder who recorded that.
04:57 Hey man, what's the best part of your job as an accountant?
05:00 - Numbers, I'm a big numbers guy.
05:01 - Big numbers guy?
05:02 How much you make a year?
05:03 - About a hundred grand.
05:06 - You seem like you have a decent layout.
05:08 Not much of a jump shot, but a decent layout probably.
05:11 Hey, go walk in the files next year, all right?
05:14 Come to New York, we'd like you here.
05:17 For real, better than Julius.
05:19 Duncan Robinson, big numbers guy.
05:21 And if we're talking numbers,
05:22 he's making more than $18 million over the next two seasons,
05:26 which is just a little more than the 100K accountant
05:30 Duncan Robinson makes.
05:31 It's also funny that Robinson has the same profession
05:34 as Canadian Kelly Olenek.
05:36 What do you do for a living?
05:36 You're pretty tall.
05:38 - Accounting.
05:39 - You're an accountant?
05:40 - Yeah.
05:41 - Accountants by day, hoopers by night.
05:42 You love to see it.
05:44 Alcmanoa's comeback from his demotion to the minors
05:47 hit a pretty ugly bump in the road last night.
05:49 After a strong return
05:51 just before the all-star break against Detroit,
05:53 Manoa was shelled by the Padres for four runs
05:56 on three hits and five walks
05:59 before being yanked after just three innings.
06:02 Now, despite the rough line and ugly walk total,
06:04 there were actually some encouraging takeaways
06:06 from the loss.
06:07 He managed to get ahead of,
06:08 or throw a first pitch strike to,
06:10 11 of the 16 batters he faced.
06:12 Unfortunately, he just couldn't put away hitters
06:15 as he finished with zero strikeouts
06:17 for the second time in his last three big league starts.
06:20 Coming into this season,
06:21 Manoa had 307 strikeouts in just over 308 career innings
06:26 and never had a start with less than two Ks.
06:29 This season, he already has three such starts.
06:32 So regaining his ability to put hitters away
06:34 might need to be his biggest priority.
06:36 And things won't get any easier
06:38 for the struggling Jays righty
06:39 as his next opponent may be the team
06:41 that started this downward spiral.
06:44 The Seattle Mariners who roughed them up
06:45 in game one of their wild card sweep last October.
06:48 Hopefully that pressure from last year
06:50 has finally made its way into Alex Tyers.
06:53 All right, now with more from down under,
06:55 let's send it back to Marissa.
06:56 - Hey, thanks Luca.
06:57 And listen, even though I'm not contractually obligated
06:59 to do this, I do wanna take you with me
07:01 in another little segment called Roberto on the go.
07:04 We're at practice.
07:08 This is where the Canadian women are practicing
07:09 and the second we walked in,
07:10 we saw the goaltenders jamming out to Backstreet Boys.
07:13 So we had to ask the team the important questions.
07:15 - You have Spice Girls in there too or?
07:17 - I was next on the list.
07:18 These ladies wanna hear some bangers.
07:20 Just outside of the practice walls,
07:21 there were a ton of birds, just random birds.
07:24 And then I got a little too close.
07:25 Okay, okay, okay.
07:26 I'm gonna cut the camera here.
07:28 Team Canada left and then so did we,
07:29 but then our Uber got in a fight with a taxi driver.
07:32 It was a whole scene.
07:33 - No, no, no, no, no, no.
07:34 - We didn't end up getting out,
07:35 but it was all resolved just in time for lunch.
07:37 Then we walked it off and we just happened to find
07:39 the rest of the broadcast team.
07:40 Ended the day with a little dinner
07:42 before everyone had to go back to work.
07:43 - A little too matchy here with Claire Hanna,
07:45 but we just witnessed the Canadian women's practicing.
07:48 What is your takeaway from watching them play
07:49 and seeing Jessie Fleming on the bench?
07:51 Are we concerned about their first match against Nigeria?
07:53 - Well, I think given the fact
07:54 that they're playing Nigeria in two days,
07:56 she's one of their key players.
07:58 She scored four penalty kicks in the 2020 Olympics
08:01 en route to winning a gold medal for Canada.
08:04 It's scary.
08:06 You gotta wonder what's up.
08:07 Why wouldn't she be training two days ahead of time?
08:10 But at the same time, maybe it's just maintenance.
08:12 That's what head coach Bev Priestman said.
08:14 It was a lighter training session for everybody
08:16 and they just want to ensure
08:17 that she's ready to face Nigeria.
08:19 - You've been here longer than me.
08:20 You've been watching the women for a little bit now.
08:22 Do they seem ready to you?
08:24 'Cause I feel like they've got a big mountain to climb.
08:25 - They do, but I feel like you would attest to this.
08:28 There seems to be some really good energy and vibes.
08:30 They've got the tunes cranking before practice,
08:32 whether it's S Club 7 or Spice Girls.
08:35 They keep things light and they keep it fun.
08:37 They always start drills or start practice
08:39 with a fun drill, whether it's one-on-one,
08:41 there's a lot of laughter,
08:43 a lot of cheering involving everybody.
08:44 And then when they close practice, we don't see things,
08:47 but I think that's when the focus really turns on.
08:49 And this group wants to accomplish something really special
08:53 and they've got a target on their backs
08:54 because they're defending Olympic gold medalists.
08:56 - It's true.
08:57 Okay, the hardest question of all right now.
08:59 We heard a few songs being played for practice.
09:01 So you have to choose one and only one to listen to
09:05 for the rest of your life.
09:06 S Club 7, Spice Girls, or Backstreet Boys?
09:10 - I was gonna say Backstreet Boys.
09:11 ♪ Everybody, yeah, yeah ♪
09:15 - All right, that's enough.
09:17 (upbeat music)
09:18 Okay, so as I've been telling you all throughout the show,
09:19 the FIFA Women's World Cup kicks off tomorrow
09:22 at 3 a.m. Eastern, midnight Pacific,
09:24 as co-host New Zealand takes on Norway.
09:26 Now over the month, we're gonna end each show
09:27 with a little exact score bet action,
09:29 partnered with our friends at FanDuel.
09:31 Now here's a little fun fact for you.
09:32 Every single FIFA World Cup opening match
09:35 has had the winner shutting out the loser.
09:37 And when the hosts have played in these games,
09:39 they are four and O.
09:40 So while on paper, Norway seems to be the better team,
09:43 we think there's some logic to that home bump.
09:44 Let's start this tourney off with a winner,
09:46 and it's a big one at that.
09:47 We're going one-one draw at plus 1,000,
09:49 bucking the clean sheet trend.
09:51 And just a reminder, TSN has you covered with both games
09:53 starting at 3 a.m. Eastern with the game we just mentioned.
09:56 And then at 6 a.m. Eastern, 3 Pacific,
09:57 it's Australia against the Republic of Ireland.
