00:02 - Hello Shane.
00:25 - Hi.
00:26 - Is it your first time as a jury member or?
00:28 - Yes, I mean, I believe so.
00:30 (laughing)
00:31 Yeah, no, this is the first time for real
00:34 and it's been a wonderful experience so far.
00:37 It's a lot of work as it probably should be,
00:39 but we really saw some very good series and films
00:44 and I'm not making that up.
00:46 And so it's made it difficult in a good way
00:50 of trying to figure out how we can
00:52 get the best projects nominated.
00:55 - What were you the most surprised with
00:57 with these shows, because they're all international,
01:00 so maybe the themes you were not always aware of them
01:03 and such.
01:04 - There was a couple, I mean, I don't, that's the problem.
01:07 I'm not sure how much I can talk about that,
01:08 but there was at least two that were about subjects
01:11 that all of us were somewhat privy to,
01:15 but didn't know a lot about.
01:17 And that was fun because then you're actually
01:20 learning a bit and it made us,
01:22 it's also why we knew it stood out
01:24 because it made us want to get on your laptop
01:27 or your phone and start doing research about it.
01:30 I think that's always important.
01:31 It's very easy to do cookie cutter,
01:36 straightforward type shows.
01:37 So I think we had some that thought outside the box
01:40 and that's what made this whole selection
01:44 a little more difficult, but in a great way.
01:48 - Let's talk about your career a little bit, of course.
01:52 So we may know you as the international audience
01:55 from once and again years ago.
01:56 - Sure, I love that.
01:57 It's always good to hear about that.
01:59 - Yeah, so what was that first experience?
02:02 - That was my acting class, basically.
02:04 I was 20 when I booked the pilot,
02:08 21 when the show started,
02:11 23 when the show left the air.
02:14 So look, Marshall Herskovits and Ed Zwick,
02:18 the creators of the show,
02:20 were our fantastic writers and producers
02:22 having done "30-something" and "Sisters"
02:25 and "My So-Called Life."
02:27 I think they're batting a thousand
02:29 with everything, every project that they do.
02:31 They knew I was young and impressionable
02:34 and hadn't worked much.
02:35 This was my first series.
02:37 And they kind of became my acting class
02:40 by bringing me into keeping everything real,
02:43 keeping everything natural.
02:45 That was their style of acting,
02:47 the way that we're speaking to each other right now,
02:48 like that, rather than being over the top.
02:52 And I still kind of use those techniques,
02:55 for better or for worse, to this day.
02:57 And it's a form of acting that I love.
03:00 - And that's why it was so beloved.
03:02 It was this family show
03:03 and everyone felt connected to it, I guess.
03:05 - Good, good, yeah.
03:06 - A couple of years later, "ER," of course,
03:09 I felt that your character, Ray Barnett,
03:12 was kind of overlooked, maybe misunderstood,
03:16 let's say that.
03:17 - Yes, for sure, yes.
03:18 - So what do you think?
03:19 - I think that Ray ended up getting a pretty good arc
03:24 by when it was all said and done, by the end of the series.
03:29 I was just saying that I think it's amazing
03:33 that they kept me in the loop
03:34 and kept me a part of the show,
03:37 even when I wasn't a part of the show.
03:38 - And for the finale.
03:40 - And then coming back for the finale.
03:41 But Scott Grimes and Linda Cardellini,
03:44 they would call and say,
03:45 "Hey, when I wasn't on the show,
03:46 "hey, we're talking about you."
03:48 And I'm like, "What does that mean?"
03:49 They're bringing up your character.
03:51 And I'm like, "Really?
03:52 "I'm not, okay, that's lovely, I love that."
03:54 And I don't think they knew what they were going to do
03:59 with Ray to begin with.
04:01 I do know when they started season 11, when I started,
04:04 they wanted a new young male doctor
04:08 who could be kind of like Clooney was in the beginning,
04:13 like Goran was in the middle,
04:15 and the new version of that,
04:17 but they liked my music background
04:19 and they threw that in there until I told them,
04:21 "We gotta get rid of this at this point.
04:24 "It's gonna be weird having him do both."
04:26 And they loved those things.
04:28 So I think they just let it play out.
04:31 The romance and the love story,
04:34 that ended up happening with Ray and Neela,
04:35 that was just organic.
04:37 And then when they saw that happening,
04:39 which they didn't write into the script really,
04:42 they went with that.
04:43 And I think that's what helped resonate
04:45 with the fans a lot.
04:46 I think they ended up loving the connection
04:48 between Ray and Neela.
04:50 - That's when I can ask about music.
04:52 So do you still play?
04:53 - I do.
04:54 I haven't played in a while.
04:55 It's been, well, the last show with my old band,
04:58 I think it was a couple of years ago.
05:01 But I moved to Nashville, Tennessee a couple of years ago.
05:04 - Countryman, okay.
05:05 - I mean, maybe, I don't know.
05:07 I'm trying to think about that.
05:09 If I did, it would be a little bit more outlaw country.
05:11 It'd be a little more Johnny Cash, I guess.
05:16 Or now it would be more of a Chris Stapleton, I guess.
05:19 But it would be a little more folky in that sense.
05:24 - So your punk days are in the past?
05:27 - I don't know.
05:28 I don't know.
05:29 It's a weird, it's me getting used to a new living situation
05:33 and culture and people.
05:35 And it's sort of me trying to figure out
05:38 where do I fit into that, you know?
05:40 - And then of course, Nikita, Sa, Michael.
05:43 I mean, the four main characters,
05:45 I think they're all beloved.
05:46 I mean, well, now that we talk about Michael to you,
05:48 what do you think of him?
05:50 - Love him.
05:50 I mean, I really enjoyed the,
05:55 well, I really enjoyed the movie, the Luc Besson film,
05:57 but also the first series with Peta.
06:00 The irony of that is I did
06:02 "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" with Peta Wilson
06:04 and then later was on Nikita.
06:06 But she was a great Nikita in the film,
06:09 Nikita in the USA series.
06:11 And I really enjoyed the Roy, if I'm getting this correct,
06:14 the actor who played Michael on that series.
06:16 I really enjoyed his interpretation of it
06:19 and wanted to give a little of a homage to him
06:24 on the series that I did and play it to a similar extent
06:28 because I really liked how he embodied
06:30 the character of Michael.
06:32 And then Maggie and I had great chemistry right off the bat
06:35 and it really helped the Michael and Nikita relationship
06:38 work for four years, you know?
06:39 - Thank you very much.
06:40 - Thank you.
