00:12 [crowd chanting]
00:15 >> Robson Gonzalez-Sales said,
00:17 "I've got no quarrel with that loss to Shakur Stevenson,
00:20 although he didn't make weight,
00:22 but the Oscar Valdez fight,
00:24 I still haven't accepted as my first loss,
00:27 and I'm not going to accept that loss."
00:30 >> Andres, you're going to be in the WBO
00:32 for the next 12 weeks.
00:34 >> I'm going to be in the WBO
00:35 for the next 12 weeks.
00:37 >> Andres, you're going to be in the WBO
00:39 for the next 12 weeks.
00:41 >> I'm going to be in the WBO
00:43 for the next 12 weeks.
00:45 >> Andres, you're going to be in the WBO
00:47 for the next 12 weeks.
00:49 >> I'm going to be in the WBO
00:51 for the next 12 weeks.
00:53 >> Andres, you're going to be in the WBO
00:55 for the next 12 weeks.
00:57 You can't leave it in the judges' hands anymore.
00:59 You're going to see an aggressive,
01:01 but intelligent, hopes on Conce Sal tonight.
01:03 >> Well, that's the missing link for Conce Sal.
01:05 He's a good boxer, but he's not always a consistent boxer.
01:08 He has good moments in fights.
01:11 He puts together good rounds,
01:13 but he hasn't shown that he can close the show
01:15 in the biggest moments, and that's what happened
01:17 in the fight with Oscar Valdez
01:19 in Arizona, in his hometown.
01:21 He took his foot literally off the gas
01:23 and allowed Valdez to get back into the fight,
01:25 and that's why he lost,
01:27 though it was close.
01:29 Should have never been that close.
01:31 >> And controversial.
01:33 He has a claim at having beat Oscar Valdez,
01:35 but nonetheless, the judges saw it a different way.
01:37 >> But he allowed too many moments.
01:39 He literally started moving around the ring.
01:41 It was an amateur approach to a professional fight,
01:43 where you get up early and you dance around,
01:45 and that just doesn't fly in professional ranks.
01:47 So though many thought he won,
01:49 I can understand why he allowed himself
01:51 to be in the ring.
01:53 I can understand why he allowed himself
01:55 for the fight to be taken.
01:57 >> Luis Dorea, his trainer, was so upset that night.
01:59 Just couldn't believe what happened,
02:01 and then you add to that,
02:03 you're in your opponent's hometown,
02:05 and as much as we like to say
02:07 fights are fair and judges
02:09 don't have a bias,
02:11 the crowd can really cause them to
02:13 see things that aren't happening in the ring,
02:15 and maybe that's what happened
02:17 on that occasion.
02:19 All right, a minute left here in round one,
02:21 and already we see a more active
02:23 Obson "Conse" Sao.
02:25 But we've seen this before.
02:27 [laughter]
02:29 >> This movie is not different, Dre.
02:31 >> Just got to wait and see
02:33 what Conse Sao shows up,
02:35 but he is a very, very good boxer.
02:37 Good arsenal.
02:39 I mean, he's a gold medalist
02:41 and won a gold medal
02:43 in the 2016
02:45 Olympic Games. You don't get to that level
02:47 not being elite or having
02:49 an elite skill set.
02:51 >> Nice left by
02:53 Conse Sao that Blanco partially blocked.
02:55 He's trying to set up his shots
02:57 so far.
02:59 Nice left hook
03:05 from Conse Sao on the inside.
03:07 And tonight's main event, Josh Taylor
03:15 and Tio Fimo Lopez are both former
03:17 undisputed champions, but
03:19 their accomplishments seem to mean
03:21 absolutely nothing
03:23 to one another.
03:25 >> Facts is not
03:27 respect. The hell? Why do I got to respect
03:29 this? What is there to respect?
03:31 >> Well, he was the undisputed champion.
03:33 He won the Super Series. >> And I was the undisputed champion
03:35 at 135, and y'all took that away from me.
03:37 Who gives a fly? Y'all scared
03:39 of Tio Fimo at 25. I'm young.
03:41 I haven't even hit my prime yet. I'm just getting
03:43 warmed up. >> You ain't gonna have a prime after this fight.
03:45 >> Oh, yeah, you know what? You're right.
03:47 They're gonna call me a f---ing greatest
03:49 and the youngest active Hall of Famer at 25.
03:51 That's more than prime. >> You'll be
03:53 retired. >> That's more than prime. >> I'm gonna put you in retirement.
03:55 Early retirement. >> You're at the end of your
03:57 road, and your trainer
03:59 knows it, but he's got to motivate you
04:01 mentally to get there. That's all.
04:03 Carry the man. Carry that dead weight.
04:05 >> I don't need no mental motivation.
04:07 Trust me. >> Just carry that dead
04:09 weight, you fat f---. Carry it. >> I've got
04:11 a mental fortitude. >> Carry it, man.
04:13 >> I'm a mental fort. You're a mouse.
04:15 >> Thank you. >> I'm unbreakable mentally.
04:17 I'm unbreakable mentally.
04:19 [crowd cheering]
04:21 >> Josh Taylor
04:23 having a laugh, loving what he's seeing
04:25 on the television
04:27 and enjoying his moment here
04:29 in a place that Ken
04:31 Buchanan fought at, and
04:33 the mind games, Dre,
04:35 of Josh Taylor making
04:37 Tio Fimo Lopez switch
04:39 locker rooms as the A-side tonight.
04:41 The mind games will never stop.
04:43 I don't even think during the fight it will stop.
04:45 >> I think for that, in a moment
04:47 like that, it's less about a mind game. It's more
04:49 about setting the tone.
04:51 If you are the A-side, and you're the big
04:53 dog in the matchup, even though they're evenly
04:55 matched, I mean, just in terms of the belts and everything,
04:57 you've got to send the message as often
04:59 as you can and remind your opponent that that's
05:01 who you are, and that's what he did.
05:03 >> Reminds me of when we saw Tyson
05:05 Fury before the Deontay
05:07 Wilder rematch, how relaxed
05:09 he was in the locker room, just, you know,
05:11 kind of sending a message
05:13 with his demeanor to the
05:15 locker room across the way. >> Listen, I've
05:17 seen guys in the locker room before the fight smiling,
05:19 and they get knocked out, and I've
05:21 seen guys smiling, and they go out there
05:23 and they knock the opponent out. You just
05:25 never know.
05:27 >> It only matters who's smiling at the end
05:29 is what you're telling me, Dre.
05:31 [crowd shouting]
05:33 >> Right now,
05:35 Conce Sal seems to be smiling and happy
05:37 about his early performance
05:39 against Polanco as he lands another
05:41 combination. >> And you'll
05:43 see with Conce Sal, even though he is
05:45 a gold medalist and
05:47 a very good fighter, he's very wild.
05:49 He doesn't look polished, but
05:51 that awkward style has worked for
05:53 him, and it does pay dividends
05:55 when he gets into a good groove.
05:57 [crowd shouting]
05:59 It takes
06:01 an Oscar Valdez type
06:03 or Shakur Stevenson type
06:05 to make him pay for those wide punches.
06:07 >> Polanco told me,
06:09 "Look, I'm planning on boxing him, closing
06:11 the gap and getting inside."
06:13 I hope to confuse Conce Sal
06:15 with my unpredictability, but so far...
06:17 >> They're both unpredictable. >> Yeah, I mean...
06:19 >> And wild.
06:21 [crowd shouting]
06:23 [punching]
06:25 >> That was a nice
06:27 long right from Conce Sal, but nothing's
06:29 landing clean on Polanco either.
06:31 >> Not yet.
06:33 >> Polanco's
06:35 on point with his defense,
06:37 at least for the big shots
06:39 that Conce Sal is
06:41 currently throwing.
06:43 >> Ooh, that was a solid right.
06:45 >> And that's because Conce Sal
06:47 threw a shot you typically don't throw.
06:49 He led with the left to the body and
06:51 came over the top with the right hand.
06:53 Awkward combination
06:55 that you typically don't see, and that's why the right hand landed
06:57 because Polanco wasn't ready. >> We mentioned that
06:59 Polanco wanted to confuse Conce Sal with
07:01 his unpredictability, and it was that
07:03 off-tenor shot that worked for
07:05 Conce Sal.
07:07 [crowd shouting]
07:09 >> Nice body work from Conce Sal with the right.
07:11 [crowd shouting]
07:13 [crowd shouting]
07:15 [crowd shouting]
07:17 >> Timothy Bradley is off in Canastota,
07:19 being inducted into the International
07:21 Boxing Hall of Fame, as you were
07:23 last year this time,
07:25 Andre Ward. >> Oh, stop, stop, stop.
07:27 >> Please, though, take-- ooh, that was
07:29 a low blow.
07:31 Oh, what was that?
07:33 >> Oh, the body.
07:35 >> Referee Eddie Claudio said, "Stand up."
07:37 [crowd shouting]
07:39 >> Oh.
07:41 >> Maybe it was a headbutt because--
07:43 >> Accidental handball, accidental!
07:45 >> Yeah, but he's...
07:47 >> Head up.
07:49 >> Not doing well.
07:51 >> Referee Eddie Claudio's like,
07:53 "Can you stand up?
07:55 Get up."
07:57 [crowd shouting]
07:59 >> Check him out,
08:01 check him out.
08:03 >> You think he's looking for
08:05 a way out early, Dre, or--
08:07 it was not like he was getting tagged, so...
08:09 >> I've got to see the replay
08:11 before I comment.
08:13 Definitely believe it was a
08:15 headbutt, though. Here we go.
08:17 [crowd shouting]
08:19 >> He went into it. >> Yeah.
08:21 [crowd shouting]
08:23 [crowd shouting]
08:25 >> It's hard to see what that man is feeling.
08:27 Let's see it again, this angle right here.
08:29 Ponce de Sal came up
08:31 as he drove down with this punch.
08:33 I mean, it landed on the side of the jaw.
08:35 I don't know how bad that is.
08:37 [crowd shouting]
08:39 [crowd shouting]
08:41 [crowd shouting]
08:43 >> He's having a headache off of the headbutt.
08:45 >> He can't continue.
08:47 [crowd shouting]
08:49 [crowd shouting]
08:51 >> He doesn't want to continue.
08:53 [crowd shouting]
08:55 [crowd shouting]
08:57 >> He wants to continue. >> Now he wants to continue.
08:59 [crowd shouting]
09:01 >> I think it's been a conversation back and forth.
09:03 [crowd shouting]
09:05 >> He says, "Sit down, calm down."
09:07 >> Yeah, the doctor wants to make sure that his vitals
09:09 and his eyes are responding.
09:11 No dilation in the pupils.
09:13 >> I think initially he was communicating that he had a headache,
09:15 and you say certain things in a corner
09:17 before a doctor, they're going to stop it.
09:19 But I think he changed his mind.
09:21 And that's exactly what happened because
09:23 I said, "You think he's looking for a way out?"
09:25 No, he needed a rest to get okay.
09:27 And that's a sign of a fighter, Dre,
09:29 when they give you that opportunity
09:31 to take that exit ramp, and you say,
09:33 "No, I want to fight." >> Yeah.
09:35 >> And now he has that one minute left to
09:37 fully recover from that moment.
09:39 Let's listen in to what they say in the corner.
09:41 Jose Rodriguez.
09:43 >> No, no, no, no, he's dizzy.
09:45 >> He's dizzy, but they're going to stop it then.
09:47 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:49 >> The corner wants to stop it.
09:51 He doesn't want to stop it.
09:53 If you're not feeling well...
09:55 Now he's telling them, "We're going to stop it.
10:05 It's a technical knockout."
10:07 >> It's okay, it's okay, let's stop.
10:09 >> If it's accidental, it doesn't matter.
10:23 They're going to stop the fight.
10:25 >> He said it was an accident button, man.
10:27 The fight's over.
10:29 >> Nobody wins.
10:31 >> It's going to be a no decision because
10:33 it was an accidental headbutt
10:35 before the halfway point.
10:37 [Bell dings]
10:39 >> This fight is over!
10:43 It's a no decision, accidental headbutt.
10:45 >> Wow.
10:49 >> Accidental headbutt. It's over.
10:51 >> He says certain things in the corner, like we
10:53 mentioned, Bernardo. "I can't see."
10:55 "I have a headache." "I'm dizzy."
10:57 Those are taglines.
10:59 Those are key words that are going to make
11:01 a commission/doctor.
11:03 Stop a fight.
11:05 They don't want to be liable if they send you
11:07 back out there once you've communicated
11:09 personally or through your coach that you're
11:11 still having issues.
11:13 >> What ended up happening here is that
11:15 Nicolás Polanco was asked by his trainer,
11:17 José Rodriguez, "How do you feel?"
11:19 He says, "I'm a little dizzy."
11:21 The referee, who actually speaks Spanish,
11:23 Eddie Claudio, was there and overheard
11:25 him say he was dizzy. The doctor was there
11:27 and he says, "Hey, he's dizzy."
11:29 Polanco didn't want to stop the fight.
11:31 He says, "No, no, but I'm okay."
11:33 I give all the credit to Polanco for wanting
11:35 to continue to fight regardless of what
11:37 he was feeling, but everybody else
11:39 had the responsibility to take care of a man
11:41 who took a severe headbutt, as we saw.
11:43 You see the inflammation now on the left side
11:45 of the cheekbone of Nicolás Polanco,
11:47 but that's not even the concern.
11:49 The concern is the blurred vision
11:51 and the dizziness that he was feeling.
11:53 >> I mean, if a fighter's communicating that
11:55 off of a fact-based,
11:57 he's not feeling well,
11:59 but if he's communicating that off of a foul,
12:01 it's one thing you would say, "What's boxing?"
12:03 Well, if it's a punch, then it's a little bit
12:05 different story that the referee
12:07 still has a job to do.
12:09 The doctor still has a job to do,
12:11 but when it's a foul,
12:13 they got to really take a hard look now
12:15 because it wasn't a legal blow that caused
12:17 the problem, and they got to make sure
12:19 that they're not liable, and then number two,
12:21 that they're taking care of the fighter, and that's what they're doing right here.
12:23 >> It's not the way either fighter
12:25 wanted this to end, but...
12:27 >> You understand the concern,
12:29 and you do see some of that
12:31 inflammation, and just the way he
12:33 was reacting, I continue to say
12:35 his fighting spirit, even though
12:37 I said, "Is he looking for a way out?"
12:39 He was not looking for a way out.
12:41 He wanted to continue fighting
12:43 up until the doctor said,
12:45 "We're not going to allow you
12:47 to continue fighting because we have to take
12:49 care of your health." >> They took the decision
12:51 out of his hands. >> And that's what has
12:53 to happen, Dre, sometimes, because
12:55 your warrior spirit is,
12:57 "If I can go, I'm gonna go,"
12:59 and that's at the peril of your own health.
13:01 >> That's what we're trying to do.
13:03 >> And so here we see
13:05 Rob Sanconce Salas, we go to Mark Chinook.
13:07 >> Ladies and gentlemen, here
13:09 inside the theater at Madison Square
13:11 Garden, due to an accidental
13:13 headbutt in the second round,
13:15 our ringside physicians
13:17 have stopped this bout, declaring
13:19 it a no decision.
13:21 [Bell dings]
13:23 >> So there you have it.
13:25 The fight is declared a
13:27 no decision, and
13:29 no satisfaction for either
13:31 Rob Sanconce Salas or
13:33 Nicolas Polanco, as he still
