00:00 Hey, what's up guys? Antonio Estrada here, also known as Antistrada Hair.
00:07 And I'm Taylor Lamb Hair. We are here at Scruple Studio for the 2018 Scruple Studio shoot.
00:12 Yeah, we decided to take a break.
00:15 We're both individually styling, but we decided to take a break and collaborate together.
00:19 So, you're going to get some structural elements and then her signature really boho-styled.
00:27 Messy, disoriented.
00:28 And then a special Valentine's Day surprise.
00:32 Oh yes, Valentine's Day.
00:34 Okay, so are we ready to get started?
00:36 Yeah, so we're going to get started with more of like an infinity, French infinity on top.
00:41 For this, it's going to be a little more clean.
00:43 I'm going to make sure to clip out all the pieces that I won't be using, so I don't get anything mixed up.
00:49 And then we'll just start right up here.
00:51 How did you prep the hair? Or is there a specific way you prep for this style?
00:55 Just making sure that it's really shiny and also adding a little bit of dry shampoo at the root.
01:01 Yeah, this is Scruple, so let me grab it.
01:03 Yeah, which one do we use?
01:04 This is like my favorite product to use.
01:06 This is the dry shampoo, but it's not necessarily a dry shampoo.
01:09 It's more of a texture spray, so it adds like that perfect grip and grit to the hair.
01:14 It's seriously, I'm obsessed with it today.
01:16 You guys are both known for braiding a lot, so grit is key.
01:21 Yeah, this will be perfect.
01:22 Yes, add some little bit of grit in the hair.
01:24 So yeah, I'm going to start off with this.
01:25 I'm actually going to have you just look back just a little bit right there.
01:28 If you get uncomfortable, please let me know.
01:30 And Antonio just told me a good spot to stand to get all the action.
01:35 I think just right in here would be the best, just so you can kind of see exactly what I'm doing.
01:39 Can you do a little more down?
01:40 Yeah.
01:41 If you get uncomfortable, just let me know.
01:42 Okay. Is this good?
01:44 Yeah, perfect.
01:45 So I'm going to start with two pieces, just like wrapping it around.
01:51 Just like this.
01:54 So this is going to be more of like a tight braid, so you want to make sure you have a really good handle on it.
02:00 This is where it gets a little confusing, because you have to make sure these two pieces become one.
02:10 So you go like that, grab those, and then you wrap this around.
02:14 I'm so excited to watch you braid.
02:20 And I know you were telling me before, but how did you learn how to braid?
02:26 So I've always loved to braid.
02:28 And when I first started becoming a stylist, I was an assistant, and I wanted to be the best braider in the salon.
02:33 So I just really buckled down and trained.
02:36 And I think what I did is I just learned a lot of techniques and then implemented them in different ways,
02:42 like unique head shapes and unique ways.
02:45 And that kind of made me stand out a little more.
02:49 Are you okay?
02:53 Me? Yeah.
02:54 Nothing is better than blonde hair in a braid.
03:02 Oh my gosh, the dimension is perfect. It just doesn't look the same on a brunette.
03:06 Well, always when I get brides and they come in with dark hair, I'm like, "We're going to have to lighten you up a little bit."
03:11 We're going to have to do something before the wedding because I can do all these really cool things,
03:17 but it's going to look like brown hair.
03:19 So explain what you're doing to create this infinity braid.
03:29 So when you get a new piece, French styling means to add to the braid.
03:34 So what I'm doing is my French style piece is I'm going to wrap that around,
03:38 but I have to make these two pieces into one.
03:41 So I'll go like that, hold it, and then I use my thumb and I grab these to make it one,
03:46 and then I will wrap this around like that.
03:49 So then it creates more like that style.
03:54 So this is really cool. It's like a wow piece.
03:57 I don't think a lot of people are really wanting this, you know,
04:00 but it's cool if you have someone that wants something different
04:03 or someone that is looking to have a little fun.
04:08 Yeah, a more playful bride or festival season.
04:11 Yeah, I'm actually hoping that I could.
04:13 You know, the dream would be to design some kind of a look for the runway
04:17 and have it more structured and have it more...
04:20 Yeah, you'd be perfect for that.
04:22 They'd look at mine and be like, "Ugh."
04:24 No, yours are amazing.
04:26 And I feel like with this look too,
04:30 this is one of the braids that I really struggled with at first,
04:33 but I refused to let it be the demise of myself.
04:36 So I just did it a lot, and now it's pretty easy.
04:39 But sometimes when you first start out, it's kind of like,
04:42 "Oh, this is not looking the way it's supposed to."
04:44 But if you just keep going, it'll kind of transform into...
04:47 And what's really cool too is you've got to make sure I always grip this
04:52 because that's going to keep my braid together,
04:54 so I could let go of this piece and it should be fine.
04:57 Sydney Ann Lopez said, "Yes, your work should be on a runway."
05:00 Oh, I love her.
05:02 [laughs]
05:04 And as far as this sectioning with these clips,
05:15 I think it's really important, especially for something like this,
05:17 just to keep this a little cleaner because you want it to be like that.
05:20 If I didn't have that, I might be grabbing hairs from all over,
05:22 and it might look a little...
05:24 odd.
05:26 Also, another quick trick for doing these hard partings
05:30 is if you have that root concealer, you know, like that touch-up stuff,
05:33 if they have darker hair, sometimes their scalp looks too white,
05:37 and it kind of throws off the look.
05:39 So what you can do with those is just spray it right on here,
05:41 and it just disguises it and blends it out a little bit
05:44 so it doesn't look so...
05:46 You know, if they're really tan and then you braid their hair,
05:49 and their scalp is super white.
05:52 That's a good example.
05:53 Yeah.
05:54 That's so funny.
05:56 Especially for my Instagram pictures,
05:57 I feel like I always will diffuse that line a little bit,
05:59 just because it looks better,
06:01 especially if you're doing any on-the-scalp braiding.
06:03 Mm-hmm.
06:04 And you have those harsh lines, it's nice to just disguise that.
06:07 Yeah.
06:08 And you guys will give some more tips later on
06:11 when we take some Instagram pictures of this look.
06:15 Yeah.
06:16 We're going to give you guys all our tricks.
06:18 I don't know about all of them.
06:19 Yeah.
06:20 Got to save some secrets, right?
06:23 Are you okay up there?
06:26 Yeah.
06:27 This is so cool.
06:29 I'm glad that last time I did this Modern Salon takeover,
06:32 I was doing it on a wig, and this look was not working.
06:36 Not the same, yeah.
06:37 Yeah, it was just like, "You're ready," and I'm like, "Oh my God."
06:40 So this is like my redemption.
06:42 That's so funny.
06:45 That looks cool.
06:47 And even if you want to do this on a bigger scale,
06:53 I think it looks really good, too.
06:54 There's a lot of good people out there braiding,
06:57 and they do really big ones, and it just looks so awesome.
07:00 So I'm just going to get in the front.
07:02 You're doing it right down the middle right now.
07:04 Right down the middle, and then she'll kind of jump in.
07:07 Nikki asked, "What did you use to prep the hair?"
07:19 I know we touched a little bit on this before.
07:21 Yeah, just the Scruples dry shampoo.
07:23 Scruples dry shampoo.
07:25 That's what I used on the previous style.
07:28 So just anything with a little texture and grit.
07:32 Yeah, so you want to make sure the braids hold, right?
07:37 Yeah, and another quick thing for this look, too,
07:39 this infinity braid is amazing because it's so impactful,
07:43 but if someone's hair is really dry or damaged or really layered,
07:47 it's not going to really work because it's going to start looking like a caterpillar.
07:51 Yeah, it's going to stick up.
07:52 Because if it was layered, all these little pieces would start sticking up.
07:56 So making sure that you do it on the right client is always important.
08:01 And then I'll just stop crunching and just kind of rotate around,
08:17 just like an infinity sign.
08:19 Yeah.
08:20 I think that'll be good.
08:29 Should I go down?
08:30 You want me to go down more?
08:31 Yeah.
08:32 Yeah.
08:33 Yeah.
08:34 Do you want me to do infinity?
08:36 Bring it down like here.
08:38 Like French style?
08:39 Yeah, just regular infinity.
08:40 This is the first time you two have ever collaborated, right?
08:43 Yeah.
08:44 You know, it's so crazy.
08:45 We were DMing, and I was like, "So we live 30 minutes apart,
08:48 and we never met."
08:49 And it's like, "We have to go to Minnesota to meet each other."
08:52 Yeah, we're going to do some more stuff, though, when we get back, for sure.
08:56 Oh, yeah, so I skipped a step that I should have probably talked about,
09:05 so let me get to that point again.
09:07 So when you start to run out of hair, like right now, you see that?
09:11 So what I'll do is just add a little bit of hair from this one.
09:16 And I feel like normally in my workshops when I teach about this,
09:20 everyone wants to pull it apart.
09:22 This is not a braid that you would do that with.
09:24 You would definitely just keep it a little more structured and a little more --
09:28 It's so hard for me.
09:29 Every time I do an infinity, I'm like, "Keep pulling."
09:31 I'm like, "No, stop.
09:32 This is going to be too unraveled."
09:34 Yeah, it'll definitely unravel.
09:36 Yeah.
09:37 And you can see right there, you see what the layers,
09:39 it starts to kind of pick up a little bit, but that's fine.
09:42 Antonio, you have a class coming up, don't you?
09:45 Yes, I do.
09:46 So me and Maggie, we are teaching a class at Beeson Studios in Maryland.
09:53 It's on the 26th.
09:54 There's only a few spots left, so make sure to check it out.
09:56 Maggie MH, right?
09:58 Yes, Maggie MH.
09:59 Not our Maggie Mulhern, but another Maggie.
10:04 Yeah, we're really excited.
10:05 We're hoping to take this to the West Coast, maybe something in Colorado or Texas.
10:11 So if you're a salon owner or if you know a space that would be willing to host us,
10:16 please DM us and let us know.
10:19 Yeah, Texas is always good when we do classes.
10:27 I was a little nervous to do it in the East Coast because I don't really know a lot of people doing East Coast,
10:31 but it seems to be doing pretty good so far.
10:39 Oh my gosh.
10:41 You know what?
10:42 It always reminds me of a snake.
10:46 Yeah, like it rattles.
10:48 It's always like a rattlesnake.
10:52 It's like a perfect ombre, infinity braid.
10:56 Yeah, that's what's cool too.
10:57 Whenever you have a balayage and you start doing this ombre,
11:00 what happens is these pieces go up here because you're wrapping it around,
11:03 so it's dark and then the light is way up here.
11:14 Should I go more?
11:15 Mm-hmm.
11:17 You're like, "Go up."
11:18 Probably like an inch more.
11:21 Okay.
11:22 Yeah, and then I'll start.
11:23 Another trick too is you don't want to grab these hairs right here because they're already so short.
11:28 So you really want to make sure that you grab some hair with length so it will wrap around.
11:37 I always say when you're doing either this or even like a fishtail,
11:40 the smaller pieces you take, the more intricate it's going to look.
11:49 Do you have any tricks with dealing with these little babies?
11:53 Yeah, so I could kind of spray them a little bit, but since it's so tight,
11:57 that's how it's going to be.
11:59 So we could spray it a little bit and try to do those,
12:01 but that's why if you're going to run into that, you don't do it as much
12:05 because then that's going to happen more of.
12:10 You don't have to.
12:12 Yeah, Nikki says, "If you're ever in the Philly area,
12:14 you're welcome to have a class at Roots by Nikki."
12:18 Okay, I'll look it up.
12:19 You could do your East Coast tour.
12:25 Yeah, we were thinking about this class and we're going to launch a ten-city tour,
12:29 and I'm like, "Well, hold on. Let's do one and see if it's even going to work."
12:33 Yeah, seriously. Okay, I think that looks good right there.
12:36 Are you going to tie it off with an elastic?
12:38 Yeah.
12:40 Right here, not on you.
12:43 So what are you using to tie it off?
12:44 So just an elastic band.
12:46 I mean, obviously, if you are working with dark hair,
12:48 I'd probably use a dark band, or light hair, I'd use a blonde.
12:51 I'm actually going to show a little trick, too, that is always a crowd pleaser.
12:55 So can you get that little straight-up pin set that I have?
12:59 Oh, yeah. The mini one?
13:02 Yeah, the mini one.
13:03 Is it in here?
13:05 Oh.
13:07 I think it might be on that tray that I was using.
13:08 Oh, it's right back here.
13:11 I hope, because I don't want you to go in that way.
13:14 See, look at that.
13:16 So beautiful.
13:17 And see how the French, it looks like a little more pulled apart,
13:19 and then this one, you really can get it secure.
13:21 Yeah.
13:22 So organized.
13:23 Give Antonio some hearts if you love this look, guys.
13:29 I'm so excited.
13:30 I'm going to learn right now.
13:32 Yeah, so as far as this, a lot of times, if this was the only look,
13:34 I definitely would want to, you know, I could make this really big
13:37 and kind of have that be the statement piece.
13:39 But if I wanted to cover the band, a cool little trick is you just put this
13:42 right under like that, and then let's find some length.
13:54 And this is just a normal hairpin?
13:56 Yeah, so like a hairpin, yeah.
13:57 I would say the bigger is better because you're going to be able to,
13:59 like, put your finger through.
14:00 Okay.
14:01 So you just wrap it around like this, and then you just go right in there.
14:09 I think with my hands, I would always say the big ones,
14:11 but girls could probably get away with doing.
14:13 Yeah.
14:14 And then you just pull it through like that, and then --
14:16 Whoa.
14:18 That's so cool.
14:20 That's like magic.
14:22 And then show everybody that the pin's in your hand.
14:24 Yeah.
14:25 It's not even in there now.
14:27 That looks so cool.
14:29 I feel like that's the biggest problem when you're trying to hide bands.
14:31 You, like, pin it, and it's like, what the heck.
14:33 I don't even use a clear.
14:34 I just, like, bobby pin the back of it.
14:36 Yeah, so that will just be like a way to --
14:38 Yeah, no rubber band in sight.
14:40 And then you spray it a little bit and try to conceal.
14:44 So what are you spraying with?
14:46 So we're just spraying the High Definition Scruples Hairspray.
14:49 Okay.
14:50 Just to kind of push those down a little bit.
14:52 But remember, they're going to be --
14:54 it's so tightly wound that it's hard to get them to lay down.
14:56 Mm-hmm.
14:57 That worked pretty good.
15:03 Yeah, that's why it works on a lot of those mannequins I have,
15:05 because they're, like, all one length.
15:06 Yeah, because they don't have -- it's just perfect.
15:08 [Laughter]
15:10 Yeah, so making sure you know what you're getting yourself into
15:12 and, like, what the client has.
15:14 Mm-hmm.
15:15 Cool?
15:16 Yeah.
15:17 So you're up.
15:18 Okay, Taylor, what are you going to be doing?
15:20 I'm going to do a French fishtail, not a Dutch.
15:24 A Dutch is when you go underneath and it pops out.
15:27 A French is just a normal French braid, but a fishtail.
15:31 So I'm going to start on the side here.
15:35 Can you tell me where -- is this a good place to stand?
15:37 Yeah, so I'm going to be going this way here.
15:39 Okay.
15:40 So I'm going to split it off into two sections.
15:43 You're going to take your outside pieces, going over and attaching it to the other side.
15:49 And that's basically the pattern you're going to follow,
15:52 except you're going to be adding hair in.
15:55 But for this look, I'm only going to be adding to this left side,
15:58 to this top side over here.
16:00 So I'm going to take the outside section over.
16:03 Then I'm going to take a piece from the top with it.
16:09 And then I'm going to take the section from the right, pull it over, but I'm not going to add.
16:16 That's how you do it.
16:17 So adding --
16:19 I love these revelations that are happening.
16:21 Yeah, it's so funny.
16:24 So then I'm just adding over, adding from this side.
16:32 So is this like a mini waterfall?
16:34 I mean, it's like the opposite of a waterfall.
16:39 So yes, but upside down waterfall.
16:45 So, like, yeah, if this was flipped upside down, then these strands would be going down.
16:49 So, yeah, super similar to it.
17:01 And you want to try to take smaller sections
17:04 and try to keep the sections that you're taking to add in just super clean.
17:09 Because this braid, you're not going to pull apart as much.
17:38 So you're just continuing the same braid?
18:03 So I'm going to continue all the way to the back of her head.
18:08 And then right in line with his infinity braid.
18:12 I'm actually going to stop right here.
18:15 And I'm just going to continue with a regular fishtail.
18:18 Still pulling over on top.
18:39 How's your guys' Valentines going?
18:41 Anyone have any good dates?
18:44 This is ours.
18:45 He's my Valentine's date.
18:46 We've decided that we are Valentines.
18:48 We're going to get together.
18:55 Only at the Scruples headquarters.
18:57 Right?
18:59 So funny.
19:05 Your fiance or boyfriend are watching.
19:09 I don't want them to get jealous right now.
19:11 Love you, Daniel.
19:13 He's working right now, so he probably won't see it.
19:22 You're going to need one of these, right?
19:24 Yeah.
19:25 I feel like this is a really big trick, too.
19:27 If you could ever have someone hand you them like this.
19:29 Because sometimes if you're braiding and your hand is occupied, it's hard to open it.
19:35 So have someone just kind of hand you just like this.
19:38 Okay, I'm not going to pull this braid out too much.
19:41 I'm going to kind of focus.
19:43 So if you look right here, there's little pieces that you can kind of play with.
19:52 Because what I'm going to do at the end for Valentine's Day, it just needs to be a tight braid.
20:00 So I'm not as pulled out as I normally would.
20:13 Okay, I'm going to tie this off, which I really didn't need to tie it off.
20:17 Like you said earlier, it's so cool because with braids you can just throw something aside and it just stays.
20:22 You don't necessarily have to tie off everything.
20:25 Okay, then I'm going to go to this side and do the same thing.
20:39 So could you tell everybody how you kind of got your start with braiding?
20:44 Yeah, so one day I was -- so out of all my friends, I couldn't braid.
20:50 I had to have my mom like French braid my hair in high school.
20:53 And it wasn't even good.
20:55 So one day I was like, you know what, you just need to learn how to braid.
20:58 So I like would YouTube tutorials like crazy, and I just kind of taught myself how to do it.
21:04 And then from there I have two sisters, and they have like the most gorgeous, long, blonde natural hair ever,
21:10 which I'm lucky because I got to practice on them.
21:14 And that just kind of turned into like the styling part of it.
21:17 And then I started my account, and then I went to hair school.
21:22 And I'm still braiding because I do color and everything, but braiding and styling is my favorite part.
21:29 And you've been at Habit now for about a year and a half, right?
21:32 Yeah, yeah.
21:34 Favorite place ever.
21:40 So if anybody follows your page, they know that you're kind of known for these beautiful, bubble braids.
21:46 Yeah, I tend -- it's funny because I -- obviously I post a lot of braid pictures,
21:51 and sometimes I'll post like an icy blonde, and like those don't get as much attention.
21:57 I'm like, oh, shoot, should I not post these?
21:59 But I'm like, wait, but I'm so -- like I love this.
22:02 Well, because both of you do color too, right?
22:05 Yeah.
22:06 So it's funny what like when like people start noticing your account, like that's what you're known for is that.
22:11 You know, that's why they follow you is to see the braids.
22:14 But I'm like, you know what, I'm going to post color too, whatever.
22:17 What's happened with me, when I first started mine, I was like wanting to be known for color,
22:20 and I was like, this is it.
22:22 I've been spending four hours on this color, and it's like I'm obsessed,
22:25 but it just wasn't getting the reaction I wanted, so I started braiding, and then everyone was like --
22:29 And then everyone -- and well, I feel like, I don't know, I started braiding at a good time
22:33 because that's like when it became really big, and everyone was -- like braids were just a huge thing.
22:41 So that kind of helped, I think.
22:43 So the stylist is kind of just trying to launch their account.
22:46 Yeah.
22:47 Where do your advice be to kind of focus on a certain topic?
22:51 I would say try to like be unique and figure out something that's like different.
22:55 Yeah.
22:56 Like try to like figure out something.
22:58 Try to build your brand, but not be like everyone else, which is the hardest thing ever to do.
23:03 Yeah, that's what happened with me too.
23:04 When I was thinking about color, I couldn't stand out because there's already so many good colors.
23:07 Yeah.
23:08 But then when I started doing these type of braids, it's like not really seen, not really out there,
23:12 and it's kind of like I need to jump on this and kind of take it to the next level kind of thing.
23:16 Yeah.
23:19 I think we'll also go over like -- I feel like the pictures and the quality is very important.
23:23 So once we finish this look, we'll kind of go over that portion of it.
23:27 I was just telling Jamie earlier like my pictures used to be so bad.
23:31 I would go back and be like, "What was I doing with my life?"
23:34 Like the editing.
23:35 Like you would take a picture of like in your chair and there's like stuff all around.
23:38 Yeah, not even.
23:39 Like on my mom's wall in the house.
23:41 What would you guys say some like no-nos are for posting hair pictures on social?
23:48 I would say no like heavy filters for sure.
23:51 Yeah.
23:52 Don't overdo it.
23:53 Yeah.
23:54 You really shouldn't be like -- the only time that I'll edit it is like their face.
23:58 Like smooth out, you know, greasiness from the day or whatever.
24:02 Add some makeup.
24:03 I do that a lot.
24:04 It's being kind to them.
24:05 Yeah.
24:06 Like it has so much to do with it, honestly.
24:08 I think for me the most important thing is I really work a lot with indirect sunlight.
24:13 That's what I love.
24:14 I'm not really a big fan of the ring light.
24:16 I just don't -- it's like just not my thing.
24:18 It's not the way that I want my stuff to look.
24:20 And you two are lucky because you're working in Arizona where it's sunny every day.
24:25 Yeah, but it can't be indirect sunlight.
24:27 That is a no-no.
24:28 So you want to make sure it's indirect.
24:30 So like outside but in the shade.
24:32 Yeah.
24:33 So we have this wall that we got built.
24:36 It's like this gray concrete background, but we just have it outside in indirect sunlight,
24:41 and it gives the perfect lighting.
24:44 And ring light, I feel like some people pull off the ring light really well.
24:48 I look at someone, I'm like, "Oh, my God, I want that."
24:51 But then I'm like, "Wait, no.
24:52 I can't do that."
24:53 That's what happened to me.
24:54 I bought one, and I'm like, "It's going to be amazing."
24:56 And I start taking photos, and I'm like, "Oh, my God."
24:58 Yeah, you're like, "Wait, wait, is this okay?"
25:00 Yeah, I know.
25:01 I think it's also, you know, we kind of built this like look on our page.
25:04 It's hard to switch it up.
25:06 Yeah, that's another tip.
25:08 Just make sure you're consistent with everything that you're posting and doing.
25:13 And always, I don't know, just be interactive with other stylists and all of your followers.
25:19 And humble, you know?
25:21 Yeah, a really cool thing with me and Taylor is we were on a braiding competition together.
25:25 Yeah.
25:26 So I feel like that was really cool to kind of get us involved with.
25:28 And that's when my success kind of started, whenever I started, when I was involved in that.
25:34 So that was like the jump off for me.
25:36 Okay.
25:37 I'm going to take this cool little trick out, even though it was really cool.
25:41 And I'm going to do our little V-Day.
25:45 I will say that's the one hardest thing with that is taking it out.
25:50 I know.
25:51 Yeah, it does take a while.
25:52 You did it pretty easily.
25:53 Okay.
25:54 I think I can cover it.
25:56 Okay.
25:57 So I have the fishtail.
26:00 It's hard to explain.
26:02 So I'm going to take this outside and I'm just going to kind of flip it up.
26:06 And this is going to create a heart right here in the center like that.
26:12 And then I'm just going to bobby pin.
26:15 Hold on.
26:16 I feel like--
26:17 You want me to take it out or something or pin it down?
26:20 Maybe I'm going to take that.
26:22 Yeah, maybe pin it.
26:24 I don't want to do it.
26:25 You don't want to do it?
26:26 I don't want to mess it up.
26:27 You just need it to be more like this, right?
26:29 Yes, yeah.
26:30 Just more flat.
26:31 And then I might--can I take the elastic out or not?
26:33 Yeah.
26:34 Just be careful because I don't want it to fall out.
26:37 Okay.
26:39 It's going to be so cute.
26:41 Perfect.
26:47 Okay.
26:48 A good--okay, I'm going to give you a good tip.
26:55 When you have one of these, just take a curling iron.
26:59 Boom.
27:00 Oh, my gosh.
27:01 Magic.
27:03 Instead of like ripping your hair out, you know.
27:06 Is the iron on?
27:07 Yes.
27:08 It's just heated up.
27:09 All you have to do is just boop and it just pops off.
27:11 It just pops off.
27:12 Yeah.
27:13 Okay, so I'm taking this.
27:14 Yeah, I think it's good.
27:15 Folding it up.
27:16 We're going to create a heart.
27:18 [silence]
27:36 Is there a certain way that you're putting the bobby pins in to hold up the braid?
27:40 Well, you want to make sure you're not using too much hair in the bobby pin.
27:44 Otherwise, it won't stick.
27:45 Like I used to have to like open it up and dig it in.
27:49 But lately, I've been telling myself not to because it holds--I don't know.
27:53 It just holds so much better.
27:54 Yeah, so whenever like--I was just going to say that too.
27:55 Whenever you put like a bobby pin in like this, like if it's too much hair,
27:59 so say you open it and then you put it into a chair like this,
28:01 what's going to happen is it's going to slowly just going to slip out and it could fall out.
28:05 So if you just put it in like this and just grab a little bit of hair,
28:08 it'll be a lot more hold.
28:10 Yeah, I used to be like, "That's not true," but it's totally true.
28:13 And then you're like looking at your girl and it's like--
28:15 Yeah, you're like, "Wait a second. Maybe there's something to this."
28:21 I'm going to open this braid a little bit.
28:23 Hold on.
28:38 Inside.
28:41 No, this way.
28:44 There we go.
28:54 Can you guys see it?
29:00 I'm going to pull it out a little bit more.
29:03 Okay.
29:06 Are there any more questions?
29:17 I love answering questions.
29:20 There we go.
29:30 I was just telling Taylor that I did not have time to create like a Valentine's Day look.
29:35 I'm like super bummed, so I'm like going through my archives and I found one,
29:38 but it's kind of like old school, like the old me, so I didn't really want to post it.
29:42 You don't have one today.
29:44 I know, and I'm like, "Today, no, I have one."
29:46 Taylor's been doing a whole countdown on her Instagram.
29:49 If you guys want to check that out.
29:51 It's like my favorite holiday, so I couldn't resist.
29:54 There was too many good pictures that we--
29:56 We did a whole photo shoot, and I just had to post them all.
30:01 Yeah, so when you're bobby pinning, you just make sure you get enough of the hair from the scalp to hold it,
30:11 and then enough from the braid.
30:15 I need more hair.
30:18 There we go.
30:43 So cute.
30:46 Perfect.
30:51 I might bobby pin that.
30:53 I like that, like set it off right there.
30:55 Yeah.
30:56 A little motion.
30:57 Kim, once we're done being live, this video is going to live on Modern Salon's Facebook forever,
31:04 so you could go back and watch the whole process all over again.
31:11 I love that.
31:14 I watch Modern's videos all the time.
31:16 Oh.
31:17 You learn so much.
31:20 Perfect.
31:25 Okay.
31:26 So cute.
31:27 Spray it, and we'll probably add some curls in.
31:32 See, I did a little bit of a tight braid.
31:34 You do.
31:35 I can do it.
31:36 Let me screw mine a little bit.
31:37 So we're going to use the Scruples High Definition Hairspray,
31:40 and I'm just going to go back in and just kind of smooth out mine a little bit more.
31:43 Push those to curl.
31:45 I'm just going in there and just really, really just putting all those little flyaways down.
31:51 There we go.
31:55 Okay, and then I'm using my--it's a little bit old, but Babyliss Pro iron.
32:02 We're just going to do some beach waves.
32:05 [beep]
32:10 If you guys have any more questions for Taylor and Antonio, keep them coming.
32:15 Yeah.
32:16 [beep]
32:21 How do you normally curl?
32:23 I curl like that.
32:24 Okay.
32:25 But I did some pretty cool curls today that was very out of my realm, so that was pretty fun.
32:30 Pushed you a little bit.
32:32 So when I curl, I'm just curling away from the face, everything from the temple back to right behind the ear.
32:41 And I'm going to leave out an inch of the ends.
32:45 I feel like that's the most important part.
32:47 You have to leave out those ends.
32:48 So true.
32:49 If not, it might get a little crummy.
32:51 And then once--exactly.
32:53 Once you get behind the ear, you're going to start going towards the face.
32:57 [beep]
33:08 Twist that around.
33:14 You want to take about an inch to an inch and a half of sections, depending on how you want the curls to look.
33:20 But I literally don't even hold it on that long, like two seconds.
33:24 No, you are flying through this.
33:26 And I never pin it up or anything in the sections.
33:29 Maybe that's just because I'm super messy about everything.
33:33 Like we were saying before, you guys are lucky with the Arizona weather.
33:39 Your looks, they all confold.
33:42 There's no humidity to frizz anything.
33:45 Yeah.
33:46 So true.
33:48 And then we get like 2% of humidity and we're like, "Oh!"
33:51 My hair is like, "God, what is this?"
33:53 I actually just did a Brazilian blowout, so I'm going to be good.
33:58 I'm going to California soon.
33:59 I'm going to be set for the beach.
34:01 You know what's really crazy about my hair?
34:02 I normally like it like super big, and in humidity I was so excited because I'm like, "Oh my God, I'm going to be big."
34:07 But it was like super flat.
34:09 You're like, "What's going on?"
34:12 Okay, and then I'm going to spray a little bit of the dry shampoo.
34:17 What's that going to do?
34:20 So this is just a texture spray.
34:22 It kind of just messes the curls up a little bit.
34:24 It gives it just that--some body, some grit.
34:29 It really--like it's good for everything.
34:31 I love texture spray.
34:33 It's good for braids, good for curls.
34:40 It's just going to give it that like lived-in look.
34:43 And for people that like have super clean or fine, silky hair, this would be perfect.
34:47 Like if your curls don't hold, then you should spray a little texture spray in before and then a little bit afterwards.
34:55 And that should kind of help.
34:57 [spraying]
35:03 Hi, Schmegs.
35:05 [laughter]
35:06 Schmegs out there?
35:07 Yeah.
35:08 Aw.
35:09 She says, "So cute."
35:10 You're taking it off?
35:12 Yes.
35:13 Okay, so it melted.
35:14 Boom.
35:15 [laughter]
35:18 It's like the best little trick ever.
35:20 Yeah.
35:21 We're done.
35:23 We just did our first collab on Valentine's Day.
35:25 Yay.
35:26 [laughter]
35:27 So now let's show everybody how you're going to take pics of this.
35:30 Oh, yes. Okay.
35:33 We have some cute Valentine's Day accessories that we're going to make Molly--
35:36 We both--
35:37 --hold.
35:38 Yeah.
35:40 We both kind of take pictures differently.
35:42 A little bit, yeah.
35:43 So you go first.
35:44 Okay.
35:45 So let's go ahead and turn you around right here.
35:50 Go up a little bit just right there.
35:56 So let's see, how are we going to fix this?
35:58 I know, that might--
36:02 Try to hold it back for me.
36:03 Yeah, wait.
36:04 [laughter]
36:05 Oh, no. There we go.
36:06 I don't think that's bad.
36:07 I think that could work.
36:09 Yeah.
36:11 So let's put this side over.
36:12 Yeah, I think it's cute.
36:13 And then just hold it with one like that.
36:14 Mm-hmm.
36:16 That's super cute.
36:18 So my big thing when I'm taking photos is I always kind of slap them over a little bit.
36:22 And then in my screen--
36:23 Slant their head?
36:24 Yeah, just a little bit.
36:26 Most of my braids are done in the back, so I always kind of have the back shot.
36:30 When I'm doing my actual picture, I will try to put it in but slant it a little bit.
36:38 Mm-hmm.
36:39 And then just start taking photos like that.
36:41 But because she has this little thing, I should go like this way a little bit.
36:46 I think it's really smart to also place them exactly how you want them.
36:49 So if you want your photos to be good, you have to make sure to kind of direct them.
36:56 Can you look up a little bit more?
36:57 Yeah, perfect.
37:04 How many pictures do you say you usually take of one style?
37:08 I would say I take about-- I want to say like 30 to 50.
37:13 What about you, Taylor?
37:15 Oh, like 200.
37:18 [LAUGHS]
37:19 I'm not even exaggerating.
37:21 I tend to go a little bit crazy on those.
37:24 Yeah, what happens too is you want to make sure-- like, I feel like I hate everything.
37:27 And then I go back, and I'm like, oh, that one's so good.
37:30 Yes, so true.
37:35 I feel like the reason I have so many of those is because I do every angle.
37:39 I'll show you guys all the angles that I do, but I literally go through everything.
37:44 I like to kind of do this too because it kind of just brings out that hair.
37:48 Max owns me too, Taylor.
37:49 Yeah.
37:50 You're doing something, right?
37:52 I'm going to ask Shmag if she's in bed.
37:54 Shmag's Mia wants to know if you're in bed right now.
37:56 [LAUGHTER]
38:00 I'm right on.
38:01 Should I go like that?
38:03 That's great.
38:04 So also, if you guys are feeling like your pictures are a little blurry,
38:12 I would say to make sure to wipe-- did I say that already, to wipe off this part?
38:16 No, it's a good note.
38:17 I saw you do it.
38:18 You taught me about that before.
38:19 I always just make sure to wipe that because sometimes I will see posts that are kind of a little blurry.
38:23 And I say, let me wipe your camera.
38:25 [LAUGHTER]
38:26 Yeah.
38:28 See, those are my tricks.
38:30 That's so nice.
38:32 Yeah.
38:33 All right.
38:34 You're up.
38:35 Everybody's going to see your craft.
38:38 But the camera still works.
38:40 It kind of works.
38:41 OK.
38:42 Should I try to tape this up here?
38:44 Oh, yeah, that's what we did for honors.
38:46 I don't know.
38:47 I want to take mine to the back.
38:49 You want her like this?
38:50 Yeah.
38:51 Hold it really quick with one arm.
38:53 That's good.
38:55 And then I want to fold it.
38:58 Like the V.
38:59 Yeah.
39:00 Yeah.
39:03 OK.
39:04 Yeah, so I'll take the crown of the head and I'll tilt it like way back.
39:09 And then I always do a little bit farther away.
39:15 I do try to get full-- not full body, but I like to get a lot.
39:19 See, like I just take a million.
39:21 I probably shouldn't take that many, but it works.
39:26 And then how do you decide on the perfect one?
39:29 Oh, gosh.
39:31 Once you take your 300 pictures.
39:33 I literally scroll through and I'll favorite all the ones that catch my eye.
39:37 And then from there I'll go to my favorite album.
39:39 And then I'll pick which ones I like from there.
39:41 And then I'll edit all those.
39:43 There's a whole set.
39:44 Seriously, it's a system.
39:45 It takes me like two days to do it.
39:47 Yeah, I'd say if you're starting out, make sure-- just take a lot of photos.
39:50 Just take photos.
39:51 Yeah, just learn your angles.
39:52 That's the biggest thing.
39:54 Because even if you-- there's been days that I-- oh, I love that.
39:57 There's been days that I can't create content.
39:59 It's just so busy and there's no time.
40:01 But I'll have so much more pictures.
40:04 OK, one thing that I'll do is I'll take my hand here.
40:10 That's a good one.
40:12 It's like a super popular one.
40:14 Or look straight back and then put your hands underneath your hair.
40:18 I do like this with your hands.
40:20 Oh, like blades?
40:21 Yeah, and then you're just going to put them right at the nape of your neck.
40:24 And you're going to lift your hands a little bit.
40:26 Not your fingers, just your wrists.
40:29 There you go.
40:30 And then look up.
40:32 And then look down.
40:35 It kind of gives it just a different look.
40:37 Do you guys have any favorite apps to edit pictures with?
40:45 Oh, yeah.
40:47 I like to use Facetune.
40:48 That's what we use to smooth and do the makeup.
40:52 Face this way with your body, all the way with your feet and everything.
40:56 And then look up to the board.
40:58 This is a good angle, too.
40:59 If you're doing a big side braid or something like that,
41:01 this is a really good one.
41:04 And if they have their long hair just draping here, I love this one.
41:08 But what else?
41:10 VSCO.
41:12 It's spelled like V-S-C-O. That's a good one.
41:16 For detailing, like that kind of stuff, little things.
41:22 I use Facetune mostly, and that's when I was saying about the parts.
41:26 If you want to blur that line out a little bit,
41:29 you could just smooth it out just so it doesn't look so light.
41:41 Sometimes you can do a little bit of adjusting in your actual camera.
41:46 Just edit the body to kind of adjust things a little bit.
41:49 Okay, face the back one more time.
41:54 Yeah, just working the angle here and then here.
41:58 One thing, the ends of the hair.
42:10 They're always going to be not as healthy, obviously.
42:13 They shouldn't be crumbling off.
42:15 But you can just make sure that they're smooth because sometimes they can go out crazy,
42:19 especially if they have thin hair.
42:21 It's going to be thinner on the ends anyway,
42:23 unless they always get a super blunt, healthy cut.
42:27 When you're styling, do you ever take out your shears and do a little trim?
42:32 Or not usually?
42:33 Not usually.
42:36 The models that we use and clients that we use, their hair is really healthy,
42:40 so it's not like they need any help with that.
42:43 You were also telling me before you work a lot with extensions.
42:46 Yes.
42:48 If we were at home, she would have a whole head down her butt.
42:53 We just love hair.
42:56 Not that there's anything wrong with her hair, but again, that's just part of my brand.
43:02 That's just what I like to work with.
43:07 And look down to your left shoulder.
43:19 It's good to get different angles because I'll choose my best one,
43:24 and then I'll post that or post one or two.
43:28 On my Insta story, I'll post the other ones that I didn't think was worthy of being a post.
43:33 Just different angles.
43:35 People check Insta stories, so that's a good tip too.
43:38 If you're wanting to gain attention, that's all people do all day is swipe through Insta stories.
43:45 If you get on the popular page, there's been a few times where a random video of mine
43:49 will be on the search popular page, and one video got like 8 million views.
43:55 That's insane, but once you get that there, it can be really cool.
44:00 I saw you were working on organizing the new archiving feature on your page.
44:06 Oh, yes.
44:08 That is the coolest thing.
44:10 Who am I saying?
44:12 Jen Atkin Hair and all those celebrity stylists that I'm obsessed with,
44:15 they all have the highlights.
44:18 They're organizing it to where you click a Q&A, and then you click that,
44:22 and there will be a bunch of Q&A questions or how-to's or stuff like that.
44:27 I think that's so cool.
44:28 But it's really hard because you have to post everything in your story.
44:31 My stories right now have like a million braids because I wanted one for braids.
44:35 Then yesterday, I think it was on my blondes.
44:37 Eventually, it'll get there, but I think that look is super cool
44:41 because that's when I will go on their pages.
44:43 I'm like, "Oh, I want to see how to do this or how to do that or what they did here."
44:47 The behind the scenes is super cool to me.
44:49 That's a really good tip too.
44:51 Instagram is your guys' portfolio kind of, so utilizing those new features is super important.
44:56 Yeah, it's so true, especially for someone like us who do both color and braids.
45:00 People can be like, "Oh, wait. They do color here.
45:02 Let's click that and see their work for that as well, not just braids."
45:05 I feel like there's a lot of things that happen in the salon and in my life
45:09 that I don't want to post about, so it's cool to have it on the highlights
45:13 so they're always there so people can see them.
45:15 I'm going to do one because I'm so obsessed with the Valentine's Day shoot we did.
45:19 I did the countdown, but I'm going to do one for the Valentine's Day shoot too
45:23 and just repost all of those there.
45:25 Hold that one more time.
45:27 Yeah.
45:30 And then look back.
45:34 See, I take so long to take pictures.
45:38 It's my favorite part.
45:42 I always get a second opinion too.
45:45 My boyfriend also does hair, and he hates this.
45:48 We'll be in bed after work, and he's so tired.
45:50 I'm like, "Wait, which one? Which one do you like better?
45:53 Which one just catches your eye?"
45:55 And then I'll always do video too.
46:03 Normally, she has a prop, but our models, they just kind of know what to do,
46:09 so they'll just move and feature the hair and everything.
46:12 If it's all up to me, I'll just start back,
46:17 and I just kind of work my way forward to kind of get the detailing.
46:20 And that way, I have something else to post, either in my Insta story or later on.
46:31 Right, and all these content opportunities, especially for you two being here at Scruples,
46:40 it's nice to have an arsenal of pictures that you can work with.
46:44 I think that's the biggest thing, take pictures.
46:47 Every time someone reaches out to me and says, "I want to start my Instagram, what do I do?"
46:51 I'm like, "Do you take pictures?" And they're like, "No."
46:53 And I'm like, "You need to take pictures of everything, all the time."
46:56 Yeah, my phone is literally just endless amounts of hair and screenshots of hair.
47:03 I just bought the biggest iCloud you can, so I don't have to delete anything.
47:06 I don't even need this iPhone, that's so rare.
47:08 Okay guys, so if people want to follow you and see some of these shots later, where could they go?
47:13 So, on Instagram, I am @distruttahair.
47:16 Instagram, @taylorlamhair.
47:18 Okay, thanks guys!
47:21 Yay! Bye!
47:22 Look at the outside state!
