GARLIC WOES

Market vendors in Manila and Antipolo continue to sell garlic on Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2022 although at a higher price amid reports of a shortage. At the Trabajo Market in Sampaloc. for example, a kilo of garlic was sold for P120. In a hearing by the House of Representatives' Committee on Agriculture, the Department of Agriculture said it expected a 63,000 metric ton deficit. Quezon Rep. Wilfrido Enverga said the country has been heavily dependent this year on garlic imports to meet local demand.
