Gümüşhane is a province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. Its capital district is also called Gümüşhane. The province is in northern Turkey, bordering Bayburt to the east, Trabzon to the north, Giresun and Erzincan to the west. The province is surrounded by the mountains. The most well-known mountain is in the north of Gümüşhane, Zigana-Trabzon mountains.

History

Gümüşhane is 1150 meter higher from the sea level and it is located on the valley of Harşit River. The location of the province is important throughout history because the city has rich mining areas for silver and bronze and also, it is located on the historical trade road which is Silkroad. Gümüşhane means silver house, its name comes from its mining sources actually.

In Ancient history, the first mention of the province in the written text is in the Xenophanes’s Anabasis. Xenophanes mentioned Drills which are a Tzan/Laz tribe from Torul. Torul is still one of the districts of Gümüşhane. Drills portrayed as the best warriors of the Black Sea in Anabasis.
