Heavy rains caused flash floods in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand, this morning.

The deluge battered the region throughout the night causing rivers to swell and burst the banks.

Torrents of muddy water gushed through the surrounding fields picking up debris and fallen tree branches.

The district sheriff Somkit Kesnakin said rescue teams had been dispatched to the worst affected areas to ensure that residents were safe.

He said that there had not been any reported injuries from the flash floods.
