Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar said the worsening river pollution in Malaysia is likely caused by rapid development and lack of awareness on environment conservation.

When launching the national World River Day celebration on Sunday, the minister cited a study by the Department of Environment, which reported that pollution increased by two percent last year.

Of the 189 main river basins in the country, 11% were considered polluted.
