Green, pink, blue, purple and yellow... They have been the source of many legends and have intrigued the public for a long time. In fact, it is a natural phenomenon that has existed since the birth of our Earth. The sun is said to be the origin of it! It's caused by quantities of particles projected into space during strong solar flares. These particles would then be trapped by the Earth's magnetic field. It's the interaction of particles with molecules and atoms that will create these beams of light. The colours of the lights will depend on the atoms that form the atmosphere. So it's too much energy that will cause these lights to appear! These lights appear in the sky between 50 and 310 miles above sea level. Sometimes they are invisible to the naked eye but are visible when photographed in long exposure. You may see them in the north of Scandinavian countries, Canada, Alaska, Scotland or New Zealand... The best months to see them are September/October, February and March. They usually appear between 8 pm and 1 am.
