Filmed only two weeks into what would become a hot and heavy year long legal battle between former star Valerie Harper, Lorimar and NBC, the show didn't want to give Valerie herself much attention. The idea behind 'Burned Out' was to give the family a chance to grieve their loss on-camera without directly mourning Valerie's character.
