Uruguay may not be a huge tourist magnet like Brazil and Argentina, but its one of the safest, most tolerant societies in the world and has diverse offerings for all visitors. Montevideo is where almost half the population live, and for good reason. Its beautiful beach promenade stretches for 15 miles, it has a wonderful blend of elegant colonial buildings and modern, pristine skyscrapers. Night culture is lively and vibrant, with many bars and clubs open til dawn and the relaxed attitude of its citizens will quickly help you find your zen. Away from the capital, you might fancy taking a trip along to the coastal town of Colonia del Sacramento, the country's oldest settlement which is fantastically well-preserved. Viticulture is huge in the country, especially considering its relative size. You may wish to sample some superb wine around the town of Carmelo.
