Transcript
00:00Medal to be determined this evening in the ladies free skate world champion Roxana Bayou in second place going into tonight's competition
00:07arriving with a smile
00:09Nancy Kerrigan in first place after the technical program
00:14She seems reasonably relaxed and Katarina Vitt a two-time gold medalist who will be the last to skate
00:23Right
00:26Now it is Tanya Harding's turn to skate, but this tortured past she's taken to the Olympics continues here
00:33This is backstage and Tanya Harding after the warm-up had a problem with her laces
00:39It is her turn to be on the ice right now
00:43This is a young lady who had a problem with her costume at the US Nationals a year ago
00:47She
00:48Had a skate blade break at a Skate America competition in October
00:53And now the public address is announcing Tanya Harding's name
00:57And she's still lacing up her boots
01:01And this is every skaters recurring nightmare, this is one that you wake up screaming from every morning
01:10Her father Al is here he is bewildered by what has happened to his daughter
01:17I
01:22Diane Rawlinson on the left
01:26And the crowd
01:27totally unaware of what
01:29Where the problem was?
01:31Now if a skater starts to panic this can really get them flustered
01:35It can throw off their timing once they get on the ice
01:36Even if you're late for practice
01:38Sometimes you get on you try to rush to get ready you try to rush to get your thoughts in order and it can really throw
01:43you off I think they just gave her a
01:45Two-minute warning a two-minute call and she's trying to get the lace going there. It's this can really throw a skater off
01:57Well this bizarre real-life movie continues on the scoreboard they're running a clock it's up to one minute and seven seconds
02:08If she's not out here in 45 seconds, I think they're going to disqualify her. I'm not sure
02:13I've never seen anything like this before at any competition
02:22She's got a hurry
02:26It's not gonna hold me
02:29Well, she's still obviously worried about the lace
02:32She should be more worried about the performance, but I guess you can't worry about the performance unless your equipment is ready
02:43Amazing
02:57The free skate ladies competition four minutes in length
03:02It accounts for two-thirds of the final score Tanya Harding after that
03:07Mistake filled technical program is in 10th place
03:11And the last jump she took in warm-up was a triple axel and she fell
03:25She escaped the music of Jurassic Park
03:41In
03:48A situation like this, I'm sure her heart rates up
03:52She's gonna have to calm down
03:56Because the first minute of her program three huge jumping passes the first one
04:03Triple Lutz she had problems with us in the technical program reaches back with a right foot single
04:11She looked at her skate it looked like she was
04:17Uncomfortable and I think she's gonna quit
04:21Devastating this it's so difficult to compose yourself when you're late name has been introduced
04:41Whenever a skater has a problem whether it's a costume or a hook or a lace
04:46They have to go right to the referee
04:48Report the problem and then the referee makes a ruling
05:00Diane Rawlinson to the left her coach
05:03I'm sure what she's telling them right now is that she tried her best to get out here on time
05:08She threw the lace on she threw it together and and she did the best she could to get out here
05:20In a situation like this the referee the judging panel will give her every opportunity to put out her best performance
05:33That's her father Al
05:41I would think Scott though. No announcement has been made. They've obviously given her a set amount of time
05:52Things like this just don't happen
05:55Again, it's so important that the skate is tied properly. It's important that it's comfortable on your foot
06:01When I get my skate on during competition, even if it's a little uncomfortable, I don't retie it
06:05I'll just get used to it because any change in the comfort if they're tied too tight your feet fall asleep
06:13Everything has to be just perfect, especially in Olympic competition
06:22The announcement has been made in Norwegian now it is being made in English
06:30It's like
06:47Well, I think they're allowing
06:49Tanya to fix her skate, but they're asking Jose Swinard to come to the ice. I'm sure Jose is not even prepared
06:57This is a difficult call because it's really not fair to Jose she was expecting to skate after Tanya Harding
07:03And while the previous skater is on a skater collects their thoughts and gets mentally prepared and this could throw Jose
07:10way off
07:16That's the USA
