Even when he was selling crack in Bed-Stuy, Jay-Z always had a passion for music — here's how the hip-hop legend turned his hard-knock life into gold.

Jay-Z, born Shawn Carter in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York, is one of the most prolific hip-hop music artists in the world. He and his hip-hop music speak for themselves. He has gotten huge praise since his initial debut “Reasonable Doubt,” which took inspiration from fellow Brooklyn rapper The Notorious BIG. After “Reasonable Doubt,” Jay-Z went on to produce other incredible hip-hop music albums like “The Blueprint,” “The Black Album,” “4:44,” “Watch the Throne” with Kanye West, and “Magna Carta Holy Grail,” some of which were under his own hip-hop music record label Roc-a-Fella.

The artist also has a lot of other ventures outside albums and hip-hop. He has his record label Roc-a-Fella and he's won several Grammy Awards. On top of all that, he used to partly own the Brooklyn Nets basketball team, created his own clothing line Rocawear, and is partly responsible for Tidal, a music streaming service. He also has tons of celebrity friends, including former President Barack Obama.

Jay-Z is also in the spotlight for his high profile marriage to fellow musician Beyoncé. The couple have three children together, Blue Ivy, Rumi Carter, and Sir Carter. He and Beyoncé are the ultimate power couple, but their relationship wasn't always smooth sailing. The two went through a public cheating scandal, and a video of Beyonce's sister Solange hitting Jay in an elevator went viral in 2014. But the love between the two made it through, and they have made lots of collabs like “Drunk in Love.” They even went on a, “On the Run Part 2” tour. It’s difficult to cover every aspect of Jay-Z’s evolution, but just know he's one of the GOAT.
