French police officers were filmed pepper spraying French fans, and using a police dog, in the city of Nice in the early hours of July 11, following the national team’s progression to the World Cup final thanks to a 1-0 win over Belgium.Twitter user Mike Kandell captured footage showing three officers walking from the direction of a police car toward a small number of fans, one of whom is carrying a French flag. When one of the celebrating fans moves towards the police an officer uses pepper spray, causing him to back away.Police repeat the use of spray two more times in the clip, with one man falling to the ground. An officer who has just arrived at the scene then approaches the fallen man with his police dog beside him. As the dog gets close to the man, he then falls backward and holds his head in agony, with officers then moving on down the street. The scene came after at least 30 people were injured in a stampede in the city on the night of the game, prompted by the use of fireworks.
