WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two reporters got into a fight at a swanky afterparty hosted by MSNBC following the White House Correspondents' Association dinner Sunday morning, May 1.
Fox News correspondent Jesse Watters, who works on the "O'Reilly Factor," and Ryan Grim, The Huffington Post's Washington bureau chief were seen duking it out over a 2009 beef at the event held at the U.S. Institute of Peace building.
The incident surrounded comments made from both news organizations about a rape case involving an 18-year-old woman who was wearing a mini skirt with a halter top baring her midriff. Bill O'Reilly had previously made comments about how drunk women that are dressed a certain way should expect to be raped.
Watters, at the time, was an "ambush journalist," who had followed and engineered an on-camera confrontation writer Amanda Terkel, now a HuffPo colleague of Grim's. Terkel's account of the incident was headlined "I Was Followed, Harassed, And Ambushed By Bill O'Reilly's Producer."
At the WHCD afterparty, Grim had recognized Watters and decided to see how he would feel given the same treatment he gave Terkel. The bureau chief started following and filming Watters with his phone. Eventually Watters had enough and swiped the phone from Grim, putting it in his pocket.
Grim tried to get the phone back and the altercation ensued. According to witnesses, the incident resulted in no broken beer bottles or cinematic sparring. But the flailing did lead to a table being upturned and several people were bumped into.
Bystanders broke up the fight and the only things left broken were the two reporters' feelings.
