00:02:08My pilot and I had landed at this little field outside of Havana many times.
00:02:13I used it as a refueling stop on my way from the United States to my ranch in Jamaica,
00:02:18and sometimes I came just for a week of fun and games in Cuba.
00:02:24This time, however, it was different.
00:02:28I represented the Hearst Press and had been commissioned to do a series of articles
00:02:33on the rebel leader Fidel Castro, which in itself was fine,
00:02:37but the question was, how could I get to him?
00:02:44My old friends were still around, but Havana was not what it used to be.
00:02:50On the surface, it was still gay, but underneath a terrible tension was growing.
00:02:56You could feel it.
00:02:58The streets were still crowded, shops still full,
00:03:03but they wouldn't remain this way with a sugar cane production at a standstill.
00:03:08Castro's strategy of destroying the cane was beginning to pay off.
00:03:21I checked into one of the better hotels, as I decided there was no use me trying to be secretive.
00:03:27Not knowing what to expect, I was traveling very light.
00:03:32This surprised my friend, the bellboy, as I usually came prepared for at least a week's stay.
00:03:40I waded through the official welcoming committee as good-naturedly as possible,
00:03:45but my mind wasn't on autographs, because an agent was to contact me after I arrived.
00:03:51I was to know him by the note he would hand me, written in lipstick.
00:03:57I could only wait.
00:04:01The view around the hotel pool made this easy.
00:04:05To be as obvious as possible, that was my policy.
00:04:09So, I sent for a barber and a manicurist to give me the works.
00:04:14This made me feel a little stupid sitting out there,
00:04:17but since every hotel in Havana was crawling with government spies,
00:04:21I felt the best way to avoid suspicion was to act like a, well, a Hollywood character.
00:04:27Actually, the cogs of Castro's machinery were moving faster than I expected.
00:04:32Fidel Castro had decided a good press in the United States would be very helpful to his cause,
00:04:39and he had approved seeing me immediately.
00:04:58So, this was the guy I was expecting.
00:05:01Hmm, wow.
00:05:04At first, I thought he was just some autograph hunter,
00:05:08but when she forced me to read the note, I knew I was in business.
00:05:13Up to this time, it seemed like I was acting out one of the many scripts
00:05:17that the New York Times had written for me.
00:05:21I knew I was in business.
00:05:23Up to this time, it seemed like I was acting out one of the many scripts
00:05:27that the studio sends me from time to time,
00:05:29but now, face to face with one of Castro's messengers,
00:05:33I knew the whole thing was dead serious.
00:05:37After introducing herself, she suggested that we go to a little beach resort
00:05:42some 40 miles or so up the coast.
00:05:46There were many people in Havana that would have tried to stop such an adventure.
00:05:50So, she wanted me to meet the main contact man as inconspicuously as possible.
00:05:56She said that there we could work out all the details
00:05:59relative to my trip behind the rebel lines.
00:06:03The young man she introduced me to came right to the point.
00:06:07He had been in direct contact with rebel headquarters
00:06:11and had the necessary permission for me to go behind the lines.
00:06:15He told me it would be a pretty dangerous journey on my account,
00:06:20as several of their carrier planes had been shot down by government aircraft.
00:06:25I suggested that I could use my own plane, which wouldn't be suspected, I hoped.
00:06:31At first, he objected to this, but eventually agreed that it might be better.
00:06:37I was to land in a predetermined grass strip near the mountains.
00:06:41Then, my pilot was to take off directly for the United States.
00:06:46I'd then be picked up by a carrier plane and flown to headquarters.
00:06:50So, we shook hands.
00:07:02After an early morning briefing, my pilot left for the airport.
00:07:05And after breakfast, we arrived trying to look as casual as possible.
00:07:10I'd filed a flight plan for the United States.
00:07:13And on the surface, it looked like another friendly party.
00:07:17As we shook hands, the agent gave me my identification for the pilot of the pickup plane.
00:07:24There was certainly no turning back from this point.
00:07:32I'm happy to say my trip was a success.
00:07:35And I came out of it with a whole skin.
00:07:38Well, almost.
00:07:41During my stay with the rebels, I sent back to the United States many stories.
00:07:46The most interesting of which concerns the young women that fought with the soldiers in the mountains.
00:07:51The Cuban rebel girls.
00:07:53They were wonderful.
00:07:55And more specifically, it concerns two Americans who found themselves mixed up in this vicious little war.
00:08:08Hey, Jackie. What's all the excitement?
00:08:10I finally got a letter from my brother.
00:08:12How wonderful. How's your family?
00:08:14They're fine.
00:08:15Have they seen Johnny?
00:08:17Yes. About a month ago, he and a couple of rebels hid from the police in our sugar mill.
00:08:22They left the next morning to join Fidel.
00:08:25You know, my people admire him very much.
00:08:28I wonder why he gave up everything here to help us.
00:08:32He's always been like that.
00:08:34Ever since high school, he's been on the side of the little guy.
00:08:37I'd love to see the big jerk again.
00:08:40How much of a chance would you take if you could see him next week?
00:08:43Almost anything. Why?
00:08:45I have to go to Florida in the morning to make arrangements for a large shipment of arms.
00:08:49My work's finished here.
00:08:51How would you like to go back to Cuba with me?
00:08:53Me? A rebel?
00:08:55What could I do?
00:08:57There are many things you can do.
00:08:59The women of my country are doing a wonderful job.
00:09:02But maybe it's too much to ask of an American.
00:09:05Look, my boyfriend's down there, isn't he?
00:09:07If I can be of some help, I might even...
00:09:09You can be a lot of help.
00:09:10These guns are very important to our movement.
00:09:12I can't do it alone.
00:09:14Will you come?
00:09:16Sure.
00:09:17And boy, will I be glad to get out of this dump.
00:09:21In every revolution, certain trusted patriots are sent to other countries to procure arms, money, and food.
00:09:29It's interesting the extent they must go to to get such things back to the home country.
00:09:34Scouts search every underworld area for guns and other weapons of war.
00:09:39There are no questions asked.
00:09:42It's simply a matter of cash in return for the merchandise.
00:09:45The cost of any war is exorbitant.
00:09:47In this case, some of the money was supplied by wealthy, idealistic Cubans and other Latin people.
00:09:54But the bulk of the financing had to come from the pesos,
00:09:58saved by the multitudes of people in Cuba hoping for a new chance in life.
00:10:08Of course, the American girl wanted to be near her boyfriend.
00:10:11That's understandable.
00:10:13But the Cuban, a girl from a very wealthy, aristocratic family, had everything to lose.
00:10:25Well, it's gratifying to know that some people can still put idealism ahead of their personal gains and losses.
00:10:34But besides idealism, it still takes plenty of guts for a couple of young kids to board an aircraft
00:10:41and head into such a troubled area with $50,000 in their handbag.
00:10:54When the girls arrived in Miami, their inattention was growing.
00:11:05They were carrying a lot of money.
00:11:08And although it wouldn't buy a lot of guns, it would buy the type most needed at the moment, automatic weapons.
00:11:15The Cuban girl felt her responsibility deeply,
00:11:19a responsibility that could not end until the arms had been safely landed in Cuba.
00:11:27Rather than take a chance on a train or a bus, the girls decided to drive to Key West,
00:11:33where they were to make contact with the sea captain who was going to smuggle the arms into Cuba.
00:11:39They paid in advance and made arrangements to leave the car in Key West.
00:11:45It was going to be a one-way trip.
00:11:48At least as far as the car was concerned.
00:11:54Key West is a beautiful spot, and it was also a hotbed of intrigue.
00:12:00With things brewing in the Caribbean, a close watch was kept at the airport and the harbor.
00:12:06Still, under one form of disguise or another, some of the operators managed to slip through.
00:12:14It didn't last long, but at the prices they got, it didn't take too many trips for them to retire.
00:12:26Buenos tardes, señoritas.
00:12:28Captain Alvarez?
00:12:29Won't you sit down?
00:12:35I understand you have a message for me from Venezuela.
00:12:38Here's my identification.
00:12:40I have the money.
00:12:41Do you have the shipment?
00:12:46The shipment is coming from Miami.
00:12:48Do you have the $50,000?
00:12:51You're not going to give it to him now, are you?
00:12:54I've been instructed to give you the money only after we clear the three-mile limit.
00:13:00Two young girls?
00:13:01All that money?
00:13:03Maybe you'll never reach the three-mile limit.
00:13:06What?
00:13:08This money was raised through the contributions of many poor people.
00:13:12Their hopes and dreams go with it.
00:13:14Fidel Castro trusts you.
00:13:17Is he wrong?
00:13:18I was only teasing you.
00:13:20You'll get your guns.
00:13:26Come on, let's go.
00:13:28Come on, let's go.
00:13:35Most of the boats were surplus Navy vessels disguised as fishing craft.
00:13:39The arms or other items were collected over a period of time
00:13:43and stored box by box in a hole.
00:13:46One day, instead of going to the normal fishing grounds,
00:13:49the small crafts would make a quick run for the Cuban coast.
00:13:53It was no easy trip.
00:13:56First, they had to evade the U.S. Coast Guard.
00:13:59Then the Cuban Navy.
00:14:01Next came the coral reefs off the coast.
00:14:03And then, the Cuban Army planes.
00:14:07Quite a tough adventure for men, let alone a couple of little girls.
00:14:12Even the American kid admitted later that she faced the trip scared to death and,
00:14:17well, trying not to short.
00:14:26♪♪♪
00:14:51Now the feeling in Havana was very tense.
00:14:54Around the clock, the nervous politicians were compiling list after list of people
00:14:59accused of some act of treason.
00:15:02With fanatical regularity, the secret police were ordered out to make arrest after arrest.
00:15:08♪♪♪
00:15:17Maria, the girl that had helped me get into the nuns with Castro,
00:15:23was unaware that she was on their list.
00:15:26The police cars were already rolling in her direction as she went to a rendezvous near the docks.
00:15:32♪♪♪
00:15:47I'm sorry I kept you all waiting, but I was afraid I might be followed.
00:15:51We're going to move you out tonight.
00:15:53There'll be a vegetable truck downstairs and when I give the signal,
00:15:56run down the stairs one by one and climb in the back of the truck.
00:16:00We're going to transport you to Oriente tonight.
00:16:03♪♪♪
00:16:09There's policia!
00:16:11No, you can't go out that way!
00:16:13You can't, you can't go out that way, they'll catch you!
00:16:16Please, you can't go out that way!
00:16:19♪♪♪
00:16:33Only if you've been through it can you know the terror that arises inside of the hunted.
00:16:38There's no alternative, no place to turn, no justice that could be turned to for protection.
00:16:46If you were caught, you could be sure of horrible torture before your death
00:16:51and then your body would be thrown to the sharks off Morrow Castle.
00:16:55♪♪♪
00:17:05These underground people knew the penalty and they faced it.
00:17:10But no matter what amount of bravery they had,
00:17:12it was still hard at the moment of discovery to suppress the terrified,
00:17:16almost hysterical feeling of having to get away, get away!
00:17:20♪♪♪
00:17:39In spite of the secret police, the traffic in people, money and illicit arms continued.
00:17:46A recruit here, a bit of financing there and guns one by one were added to the arsenal.
00:17:53It was a slow and tedious process.
00:17:56But by the time I reached the mountains, it had begun to snowball.
00:18:00♪♪♪
00:18:10One of the best suppliers of guns were foreign sailors.
00:18:14For instance, a $30 pistol picked up in the United States
00:18:18might bring as much as 500 bucks around the coast of Cuba.
00:18:22♪♪♪
00:18:26The girls, posing as streetwalkers, would pass it on to the underground.
00:18:31And after changing hands as many as perhaps 20 times,
00:18:34it would find its way into the mountains.
00:18:37♪♪♪
00:18:48The underground didn't always win, however.
00:18:51The police, through torture and their informers, usually got the information they needed.
00:18:57They'd learned that Jacqueline was in New York arranging for the arms shipment
00:19:02and they'd come to her sugar mill to make retributions on her family.
00:19:06♪♪♪
00:19:23Escape, son! Escape while you can!
00:19:28Shall I go after him?
00:19:29Not now. We'll get him later.
00:19:31You'll be sorry for this thing.
00:19:33I'm only sorry my children can't live in a free country.
00:19:36♪♪♪
00:19:45The mountains offered the only refuge to the little underground girl Maria,
00:19:49to Jackie's brother, and to hundreds of other hundred people.
00:19:53As the movement grew, more and more professional men and women joined.
00:19:58Their services, especially the doctors and nurses, were a great help.
00:20:04On the most part, this revolution has been depicted in a rather, shall I say, glamorous way.
00:20:11But I can guarantee you that many, many hardships and privations
00:20:15were endured by those rebel soldiers and girls.
00:20:20I've seen many such places as this so-called hospital several times,
00:20:24in Korea, in Spain, in other wars, and with the rebels.
00:20:31But it's still a shock to me to see major surgery performed at the roadside.
00:20:46Are you tired?
00:20:48Yes, but it's better than what might have happened to me back in Havana.
00:20:52You were lucky to get through.
00:20:54Yes, I was. But I hate to think of what happened to the others.
00:20:58Yes.
00:21:03Maria and Ben had used the help of their own underground to make their way into the mountains.
00:21:08Their work had been far more important in Havana.
00:21:12But now that she was out there, she was looking forward to fighting side by side with the soldiers.
00:21:23The guards knew they were coming, but they still had to prove identity
00:21:28and be cleared by radio from the main camp.
00:21:52We're going to question the prisoners later.
00:21:55All right.
00:21:59It's Raul. It's my friend Raul. I'll see you later.
00:22:03Hello.
00:22:23Hi, Raul, my friend.
00:22:25How are you, Johnny?
00:22:26You made it. Good, good. I'm glad to see you.
00:22:28How's your sister, Jacqueline?
00:22:29She's in Florida, arranging for a large arms shipment. It's very important for us.
00:22:32Good, good. How's your mother?
00:22:34She let me escape, but she was caught by the police.
00:22:38I'm afraid things won't go very well for her.
00:22:40I'm sorry to hear that. She did a lot of good work for the movement.
00:22:44Well, maybe they won't harm her because of her age.
00:22:46I hope not.
00:22:47Excuse me. This is Señorita Rodriguez.
00:22:49Excuse me. This is Señorita Rodriguez.
00:22:51Meet Johnny Wilson.
00:22:53Johnny is teaching our soldiers some things he learned in Korea.
00:22:56Señorita Rodriguez was with the underground until she was nearly caught.
00:23:00Oh, good. Now you're one of us.
00:23:02Well, come on down to the camp and I'll show you around.
00:23:04All right.
00:23:20I have learned from the main camp that a smuggling ship will land in our sector tonight.
00:23:24I want you to get your men prepared to march.
00:23:31Comandante, we have two new recruits.
00:23:34This is Señor Dominguez and Señorita Rodriguez.
00:23:38I can vouch for Señor Dominguez.
00:23:40And I think the young lady has her own identification card.
00:23:43You're welcome.
00:23:44I'll say that you get the job done.
00:23:46And if all goes well, I'll be able to give you better equipment tomorrow.
00:23:49We're expecting a large shipment from Florida tonight.
00:23:52Is my sister on board?
00:23:53What is your sister's name?
00:23:55Jacqueline Dominguez.
00:23:57Yes, she is on board.
00:23:59She is with an American girl named Woods.
00:24:01Beverly.
00:24:02Why, that little devil.
00:24:04Commander, do I have your permission to lead the raid tonight?
00:24:07No, I am going to lead the raid myself.
00:24:09But for a diversion, I am burning a cane field and I don't want you to get hurt.
00:24:14But for a diversion, I am burning a cane field and I want you to lead those men.
00:24:17May I go?
00:24:19Why don't you stay around camp for a while before you do anything dangerous?
00:24:22I've been through quite a bit of danger already.
00:24:25Well, since it is your sister, I will let you go.
00:24:29What about me?
00:24:31Your time will come soon enough.
00:24:33Now get yourselves outfitted and you'll be back at 5 o'clock for the briefing.
00:24:37Wait a minute, Raul.
00:24:40That girl means an awful lot to me.
00:24:42Be sure she gets back here safely.
00:24:47To get set for a raid wasn't just a question of opening a bunch of boxes.
00:24:51Here, bullets had to be homemade.
00:24:55The equipment kept clean as best as possible.
00:24:58And the small supply of grenades handed out to those who could use them.
00:25:03There weren't many.
00:25:05But I must say that I was deeply impressed by the spirit of the young people
00:25:09who were facing unbelievable odds.
00:25:12Their continual good spirits were one of the main factors that eventually led them to victory.
00:25:20Comandante.
00:25:21Johnny.
00:25:22What are your instructions for the raid tonight?
00:25:24Well, I want you to burn the cane in these areas here.
00:25:28We'll keep the roads covered, so don't worry.
00:25:30All right. Okay.
00:25:31Take whatever men you need here.
00:25:33All right.
00:25:34It doesn't look bad.
00:25:35We'll need more than four or five men, I don't think.
00:25:37You, you, you, you, and you.
00:25:44Good luck.
00:25:45Capable.
00:25:47Let's go.
00:25:56Each raid was planned with great care, detail by detail.
00:26:02Because there were so few well-trained soldiers in the rebel army,
00:26:06it was necessary to recruit war veterans from other countries, such as ours.
00:26:13Even with complete victory, these mercenaries had very little to gain.
00:26:18Once again, I had to admire the ability of some of we humans to put idealism ahead of personal gain.
00:26:37Beep! Beep!
00:26:40Beep! Beep!
00:26:47Hmm...
00:26:58There he is, capitan!
00:27:00Activate the coat of arms quickly!
00:27:06♪
00:27:25Come on, come on, hurry up!
00:27:26Hey, don't fire away!
00:27:29There, there!
00:27:44Quico!
00:27:45Let me go!
00:27:56Hurry up, hurry up!
00:28:06Go over there!
00:28:09Wait, wait!
00:28:14Blow them up, blow them up, blow them up!
00:28:16♪
00:28:24I think the fire's diversion.
00:28:27Let's get some more men and search the beach.
00:28:29♪
00:28:57Mother helped me escape and I've been up in the hills ever since.
00:29:01Well, anyway, you're safe.
00:29:03How's Johnny?
00:29:04He's out leading another raid.
00:29:05He was very surprised when he heard you were coming.
00:29:07I'll bet.
00:29:17Stay low.
00:29:18♪
00:29:27This way, hurry, hurry!
00:29:33Don't stop!
00:29:34♪
00:29:42Rapido, rapido!
00:29:43Okay, spread out!
00:29:45Don't let any of them get away!
00:29:49We've been attacked.
00:29:50I'll have to get the girls out.
00:29:51It's difficult to travel in these clothes, but you'll have to.
00:29:54This is the trail to the hills.
00:30:18♪
00:30:48♪
00:30:59I'd been out with some of the troops on a scouting expedition
00:31:02and was headed back to my camp alone
00:31:04when I first met this kid and heard her story.
00:31:10She and her friends had been traveling all night
00:31:13and had somehow escaped the army patrols.
00:31:16As I approached the river,
00:31:17I was surprised to find the girl in rather peculiar circumstances.
00:31:22She wasn't too amused,
00:31:24especially when I offered some suggestions.
00:31:29I've lost a shoe.
00:31:30You have?
00:31:31Let me see.
00:31:32Hey, this it?
00:31:35Yeah.
00:31:36Well, come on.
00:31:37I'll...
00:31:38Let me help you ashore.
00:31:41How then?
00:31:42Honey.
00:31:44Let her go.
00:31:47But I've never been on a horse before.
00:31:49Well, it's time for everything.
00:32:00There we are.
00:32:01Thanks.
00:32:04I'm sorry for the way I acted out there.
00:32:08Haven't I seen you someplace before?
00:32:10On TV or somewhere?
00:32:13Not me.
00:32:16What's a pretty little American girl like you doing down here?
00:32:20Looking for a man.
00:32:22A what?
00:32:23A man.
00:32:25Ah, a worthy pursuit, I must admit.
00:32:28Oh, I'm all dirty and wet.
00:32:30And I've ruined my only dress.
00:32:32Oh, don't worry.
00:32:33My camp's just up here.
00:32:36We can probably find you something dry to change into.
00:32:40Ah, your friends?
00:32:42Yes, they are.
00:32:43May I meet them?
00:32:45Come on.
00:32:50They were quite happy with the soldier clothes I got for them.
00:32:54However, I was more interested in her story.
00:32:57And I tried to get her to talk.
00:33:00So, she told me the whole story.
00:33:02Of her boyfriend, her trip down,
00:33:04the catastrophe of losing the arms,
00:33:07and the hope she had in meeting that boyfriend soon.
00:33:16It was interesting.
00:33:17Very interesting.
00:33:19And I tried to pump her for more.
00:33:22Incidentally,
00:33:24it's somehow heartening to know that a flint kiss on the hand can still get a reaction.
00:33:30I only hope that everything would go as well for her.
00:33:37THE END
00:34:37The rest are dead.
00:34:39Oh, come on.
00:35:08Do you think they'll let us go tonight?
00:35:10Probably not.
00:35:11Neither one of us has had any training with military equipment.
00:35:15I haven't either.
00:35:16But anyone can work this radio.
00:35:18With the losses they had last night,
00:35:20they need all the help they can get.
00:35:22Sounds like fun.
00:35:23Maybe I'll get to shoot somebody.
00:35:27Not as much fun as you might think.
00:35:31I'm gonna take a bath.
00:35:32A bath?
00:35:34A bath.
00:35:35A bath?
00:35:36A bath.
00:35:38In the largest bathtub you've ever seen.
00:35:42Would you happen to have some soap?
00:35:46Messy, but Woolworth's special.
00:35:50You know, the girls that have been here for a while would give anything for this bar of soap.
00:35:55When you become a rebel, you...
00:35:57you give up a lot of things that make a feminine life easier.
00:36:01Wait for us.
00:36:06It feels wonderful.
00:36:07Oh, yes, doesn't it?
00:36:09I didn't know about the views.
00:36:10It's great.
00:36:23Hey, let me have the soap.
00:36:25Just a minute.
00:36:27Just a minute.
00:36:31Okay.
00:36:33Okay, take it out.
00:36:36Be careful.
00:36:37Okay.
00:36:43They told me you're gonna be my assistant.
00:36:45I guess I'll have to show you how to use this thing.
00:36:48I thought you were gonna show me how to use this.
00:36:52Are all you Americans so bloodthirsty?
00:36:55No, it's just we figured that if you've got a war to fight,
00:36:58you might as well fight it and get it over with.
00:37:01This isn't even your war.
00:37:03Yes, it is.
00:37:04I don't even know who these guys Batista and Castro are.
00:37:08That's your problem.
00:37:10But the guy I'm gonna marry is out there somewhere in this stinkin' lousy jungle, hiding.
00:37:15And if he has a reason for it, so can I.
00:37:19I wish some of the Cubans felt as strongly as you do.
00:37:23Tonight we're gonna be stationed about five miles from a railroad crossing.
00:37:28Sometime during the night, the police are gonna try and move a truckload of arms that they took from us.
00:37:33Now, if we see that truck, our job is to notify the main forces so they can block the road.
00:37:39But I won't get to see anything.
00:37:42If we do our job right, it might help win the revolution.
00:37:46I know, but when am I gonna see Johnny?
00:37:51Well, we're meeting him before dark. Can you wait that long?
00:37:54Let's eat.
00:37:58¶¶¶
00:38:29Halt!
00:38:31Try to contact Gringo.
00:38:40Hello, Gringo.
00:38:42Hello, Gringo, this is command.
00:38:44How do you read?
00:38:50All right, we'll contact you in approximately 20 minutes.
00:38:53Gee, you mean I get to see Johnny in 20 minutes?
00:38:55Come on, let's go!
00:38:57All right, forward!
00:39:08Okay, command, keep coming until we see you.
00:39:19Stay on guard, stay low.
00:39:26Hey.
00:39:28Hey, over here.
00:39:32Johnny!
00:39:34Oh, Johnny!
00:39:39Oh.
00:39:41You little idiot, what are you doing here?
00:39:44I had to see you.
00:39:46You sure picked a fine place to do it.
00:39:48Excuse me, Johnny, I'm going to have to send her up the road with the radio.
00:39:51You come with me to the railroad.
00:39:53All right. Hurry now.
00:39:56Sorry, honey, but we both have a job to do.
00:39:59I'll see you later.
00:40:08Hey, where'd you get this?
00:40:10Borrowed it this afternoon.
00:40:12Think you can run it?
00:40:14Why not? Can't be too complicated.
00:40:16Go on. Here, go on in.
00:40:26This must be about five miles.
00:40:28Seems more like ten.
00:40:30All we do is walk, we never fight.
00:40:33We'll stop here.
00:40:38Have you made contact yet?
00:40:40Oh, Outpost One is coming in now.
00:40:43Hello, command?
00:40:45This is Outpost One.
00:40:48Hello, Outpost One.
00:40:50Outpost One.
00:40:52Outpost One.
00:40:54Hello, Outpost One. Command here.
00:40:58Read you loud and clear.
00:41:00Awaiting your signal.
00:41:04Please give complete description, if possible.
00:41:09Okay, command. We'll do our best.
00:41:14This radio's a little obsolete, but it's the best you could get from the States.
00:41:18It's got a range of about ten miles.
00:41:23You press this into talk, and let it go to listen.
00:41:26Can I try it?
00:41:28Sure, but don't forget the call sign.
00:41:32Hello, command. Hello, command. This is Outpost One.
00:41:36Just testing. Just testing.
00:41:41Not just now, but I'll con...
00:41:45Something's the matter at Outpost One.
00:41:49Hello, command. Hello, command. This is Outpost One.
00:41:53The truck just passed us.
00:41:55Two men in front, besides the driver.
00:41:57Three in the rear.
00:41:59A jeep following. Five men there.
00:42:01No automatic weapons.
00:42:04The truck is coming. They've got eleven men.
00:42:06Get the commander.
00:42:11All right, get ready, boys.
00:42:14Come on, let's go down to the railroad crossing.
00:42:16I'm afraid we're gonna have to stay here.
00:42:18Until somebody relieves us.
00:42:20Relieves us? We'll miss all the fighting.
00:42:22Our job is important here.
00:42:24Suppose somebody was coming down that road.
00:42:27Our reports will protect the men.
00:42:29I guess there's more to this war stuff than I thought.
00:42:44All right, Johnny.
00:42:47Now.
00:42:51Now.
00:43:22Now.
00:43:29All right, we got them all.
00:43:32Come on, boys. Get the guns.
00:43:38You get the guns. I got something more important to do.
00:43:41Give me the radio.
00:43:47Outpost One. Outpost One. This is command.
00:43:52Outpost One. Mission is finished.
00:43:56Hold your positions. We'll pick you up in a truck.
00:44:00Incidentally, I have a little mission of my own that isn't finished.
00:44:11Isn't it beautiful out here?
00:44:14Yeah, it's so quiet and peaceful.
00:44:16You never know there's a war on.
00:44:18Look at that moon over there.
00:44:19Let's sit down.
00:44:22Right over here.
00:44:31Oh, honey, I missed you so much.
00:44:33I missed you, too.
00:44:35Oh, I don't know. Those cows and cats are pretty cute.
00:44:38Don't worry about them. All they think about is the war.
00:44:41Well, now that I'm a rebel girl, I think I'll think about war, too.
00:44:45Not a chance.
00:44:47Hey.
00:44:50Please.
00:44:52Oh, honey.
00:45:07Johnny.
00:45:09Johnny.
00:45:11Over here.
00:45:20Damn.
00:45:22Sorry to interrupt. The commander wants to see you.
00:45:25Fidel has ordered an attack on eight sugar mills.
00:45:28This unit is attacking mine. We're to move out at dawn.
00:45:31Sorry, honey. Looks like I'm going to have to take another rain check.
00:45:38Johnny.
00:45:49Let's go.
00:46:06Let's go.
00:46:19Let's go.
00:46:28Now, you two stay right here.
00:46:30You let me know by radio if anything passes by, okay?
00:46:33Be careful.
00:46:35I'm always careful.
00:46:37Good luck.
00:46:49Let's go.
00:47:19Let's go.
00:47:49Let's go.
00:48:04Hold on a minute.
00:48:10That sounds like trouble back in the mill.
00:48:12We better get back.
00:48:14Okay, hang on.
00:48:19Let's go.
00:48:50Let's go.
00:49:09Johnny, I don't know where the other troops are. I can't reach them by radio.
00:49:13We're completely outnumbered.
00:49:15You take off. I'll meet you later in a cave.
00:49:17Okay? Okay.
00:49:19Let's go.
00:49:26No, no troops have arrived yet.
00:49:30Look, there's two of them over there.
00:49:33I'll get the one in the front.
00:49:38Get out of the way.
00:49:39Help!
00:49:42Help!
00:49:45Get out of the way.
00:49:47Help!
00:49:48Get the one in the front.
00:49:52Get the one in the back.
00:49:55Get in.
00:49:56Come on, get in.
00:49:59Okay, take off.
00:50:17Get in.
00:50:25Let's get them.
00:50:47Why don't you get out of the car?
00:50:49Get out of the car.
00:50:51Get out of the car.
00:50:52Come on.
00:50:54Let go.
00:50:55Come on, keep moving on.
00:51:08Jerry, they killed you.
00:51:11Let me go.
00:51:14Give me a gun.
00:51:16Give me a gun.
00:51:46Give me a gun.
00:52:16You won't get away. Neither will you.
00:52:18Come on.
00:52:19Let go of me.
00:52:46Come on.
00:53:12I found out what happened.
00:53:13The other division was delayed in the mountains and we caught the full force of the counterattack.
00:53:18I'm sorry about Johnny.
00:53:20When I first saw him, I thought he was dead.
00:53:23But his men think he was only wounded.
00:53:25I hope so.
00:53:26This morning, our troops cut the supply lines to the mill.
00:53:29Most of Batista's soldiers have pulled out.
00:53:32If he's alive, we'll recapture him.
00:53:35Then the mill is liberated.
00:53:37Well, there are still some troops there.
00:53:39But the next attack should be much easier.
00:53:41When do we go?
00:53:44As soon as we're ready to march again.
00:53:47I'm ready now.
00:54:13Let's go.
00:54:37Watch out!
00:54:44Okay, let's go.
00:54:51Okay, Commander, go ahead.
00:54:57That's great news.
00:55:00Come on.
00:55:02Maybe they found Johnny.
00:55:14Come on.
00:55:25They found Maria.
00:55:26Hurry up.
00:55:34Hurry up.
00:55:43Hurry up.
00:55:52Attorney Batista, bitches.
00:55:54Come on, let's go.
00:56:43I'm glad you talked us into this trip.
00:57:03We haven't had one since the revolution.
00:57:05They're fun.
00:57:07I don't think you should go back to the army.
00:57:09You've done your part.
00:57:11Why don't you go home?
00:57:13It's long enough.
00:57:15Stay with us until we can arrange a passage.
00:57:17When I first got here,
00:57:19I didn't know what the word liberty meant.
00:57:21I read about it in books and stuff,
00:57:23but it took this trip for me to find out the meaning.
00:57:26Johnny,
00:57:28Maria and your mother,
00:57:30it's cost us all.
00:57:32But for the first time, I believe in something.
00:57:34I belong to something.
00:57:36Thank you very much.
00:57:38But I'm marching with the rebels in the morning.
00:57:43I'm going to go.
00:58:03The rebels' strength was now at its peak.
00:58:05By the thousands,
00:58:07the government soldiers were deserting
00:58:09and joining the rebels.
00:58:13Their lines spread out all across Cuba, and town after town fell into their hands.
00:58:19But the shooting wasn't over, as I was to find out.
00:58:36Here, let me help.
00:58:37I'd appreciate it.
00:58:41You'll be okay.
00:58:44Our men have almost captured Santa Clara.
00:58:47Casualties were very bad.
00:58:50Anything that's worthwhile will cost.
00:58:53I know, but how much longer can this government last?
00:58:57We get stronger every day.
00:58:59It'll have to end soon.
00:59:02Hey, there's my friend, the big ox.
00:59:10Hi, how are you?
00:59:12Fine.
00:59:15Well, if it isn't little Esther Williams.
00:59:20Hey, hey, you're hurt.
00:59:24It's your knee.
00:59:25Yeah.
00:59:27What burns me up, it's not my knee, it's this hole in my trousers.
00:59:30They're the only pair I've got.
00:59:31We'll see about that later.
00:59:33Doctor, hey, doctor.
00:59:35Would you mind coming over for a minute, please, and seeing my friend?
00:59:40Hi.
00:59:41Hi.
00:59:43Okay, bend your knee.
00:59:46Ow.
00:59:47Oh, I see, the trouble's up here.
00:59:49Yeah.
00:59:50We'll fix it somehow.
00:59:52Thanks, doc.
00:59:54I bet this is the only needle in the Sierra Maestras.
00:59:59How did this happen?
01:00:01I don't know.
01:00:02I don't know.
01:00:03I don't know.
01:00:04I don't know.
01:00:05I don't know.
01:00:06I don't know.
01:00:07How did this happen?
01:00:12Well, it was back up the road a bit.
01:00:15We were coming this way in a jeep when overhead came the planes.
01:00:19They came in low and started strafing us.
01:00:24Anyway, out I went.
01:00:28Well, I guess this must have happened when I jumped.
01:00:32Say, whatever happened to that boyfriend who came down to see?
01:00:37Did you ever get together?
01:00:39Yes.
01:00:40Was he with you?
01:00:42No, he was captured in an attack on a sugar mill.
01:00:45He was wounded.
01:00:47I don't know if he's dead or alive.
01:00:52I guess he's dead.
01:00:58Hmm.
01:00:59Hmm.
01:01:01That's tough.
01:01:04But you just listen to me and I'll tell you something.
01:01:09In time of war, things have a way of working themselves out.
01:01:15In spite of everything.
01:01:17So...
01:01:20Just keep your chin up.
01:01:22Hey, what's this?
01:01:24Go on, saw it up.
01:01:27Wow, not to the skin.
01:01:31With the taste of victory over victory, the rebel army was now ready to roll over Havana.
01:01:38Suddenly, General Batista and his aides left.
01:01:41And now it was all over but the shouting and the parades.
01:01:45A Jubilant Crowd
01:01:55A jubilant crowd welcomed the bearded men into the capital.
01:01:59They'd won an impossible war.
01:02:02Now would come the trials and tribulations as they tried to stabilize a new government.
01:02:08This was the first step.
01:02:11There will be many more to come.
01:02:15A jubilant crowd welcomed the bearded men into the capital.
01:02:18They'd won an impossible war.
01:02:20Now would come the trials and tribulations as they tried to stabilize a new government.
