Speculation that Maria Sharapova would announce her retirement arose when the 28-year-old tennis star called a press conference on Monday, Mar. 7 after dropping out from this week’s BNP Paribas Open. Instead, Sharapova revealed that she tested positive in a drug test during the 2016 Australian Open in January. Sharapova announced that she received a letter from the ITF that she had failed a drug test at the Australian Open and that she is taking full responsibility, adding “For the past 10 years I have been given a medicine called Mildronats by my doctor–by my family doctor–and after I got the letter from ITF I found out it also has another name, of meldonium.” Meldonium is not approved by the FDA and has recently been added to the International Tennis Federation’s banned substance list due to its performance enhancing properties.
