SAN FRANCISCO — Beddit Smart is a sleep tracker that is designed to help users convert their ordinary beds into smart beds with an ultra-thin sensor that is placed between the bed sheet and mattress.

"You just lay on it. You don't have to wear anything," says Dean Tucker, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Beddit. "You don't have to turn anything on. You just go to sleep and it tracks your sleep."

The sensor measures heart rate, respiration, and movement. A microphone on the user's mobile device detects snoring.

"We're using a piezoelectric sensor, it literally is a microphone," Tucker says. "And, so what we're able to do is look at the way your body creates the electrical impulses through the sensor."

The device tracks upper and lower respiration, and measures the heart muscle by capturing readings before and after the heart beats, according to Tucker. "As your heart beats, what happens is there's these little micro movements that your body creates."

The system connects to a mobile device app that allows users to their daily Beddit ScoreCard, which includes tips on how to improve their sleep.

Tucker also says the sleep tracker can also detect if it's the user who is sleeping on the sensor or if it's someone beside the user. "Think of it like amplitude. So, we're measuring this big signal that's you and we're throwing out the noise that's all of this other stuff that's going on in the background," he says.

The device includes a smart alarm that wakes up the user based on whether or not they've gotten enough sleep. Beddit costs US $149.95 and recently launched its first Apple Watch app.
