On 5 September 1944, the Ninth Army was formed under General William H. Simpson to take over the 8th Corps from Patton’s 3rd Army. General Simpson accompanied by General Troy H. Middleton visit the front on 6 September 1944, starting with:

Kérakias Castle, North of Kersain-Plabennec - 2nd Infantry Division Headquarters - General Walter M. Robbertson
Eastern Sector, west of Fortress Brest - 29th Infantry Division Command Post - General Charles H. Gerhardt
And finally Le Conquet Peninsula - Captured German Graf Spee Battery
