Paan aka betel nut aka araca nut aka old school chewing tobacco is a super addictive little nut that's packed together inside a leaf with a melange of other ingredients. What those ingredients are depends on the country, preparing this little packet of quick high fun. Every time the ingredients are meant to elevate the flavors and give an extra kick to the quick buzz you get when chewing the package. The inside can be anything from cardamom to construction lye and from minty fresh to sour dredge. Super popular all around Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, some form of Paan can be found on almost all the continents these days. This little guy is more commonly known for it's residue than it's taste as it often causes the chewer to salivate heavily and spit a deep dark red liquid that almost resembles dried blood. This spew stains pretty harshly and is difficult to remove from walls and sidewalks where bad citizens relieve their mouths. Heavy chewing of Paan (especially when mixed with chewing tobacco) has been tied pretty directly to mouth cancer and is proven to be highly addictive. So don't try this one at home, kids.

Have you ever tried paan, betel nut, areca nut, or whatever it's called in your country? What did you think? Tell us in the comments below!
